- Early Spitfire Mk.1s had some visible differences when compared to the slightly later variants which were used during the Second World War. Join me on the workbench for this video as I build & review the Hasegawa Supermarine Spitfire Mk.1 plastic model kit in 1/72 scale - a vintage boxing which still seems pretty good despite its age!

I built a kit of this type of kit 45 years ago, and lost the model sometime in the 80s. I just bought the same type of kit on ebay and am looking forward to building it again, and your video is extremely helpful - thank you so much for posting it!
Thanks for sharing
Painting an airfix spit Mk.II while watching this, solid build all in all
That's awesome!
You definitely should do some more weathering, it could really help elevate these old kits where they lack in detail. Go all out with it!
Maybe next time
@@ModelMinutesI like how you omitted the weathering on it.. It adds a certain retro vibe to it.
Great job!
Im a mostly boat moddler and ive only begun my modeling journey half a year ago its a joy to watch these videos for the tips and general enjoyment.
Great little vintage build! I’d really like to see you tackle a vintage Heller kit! Preferably one of those early war French bombers.
Thanks for the suggestion! I have a 90's (i think) F84 from Heller in the stash to do - and I think a 70's Bf109 as well
Vintage builds are the ones I enjoy most.
I adore seeing old kits get built, and this one looks very nice for its age! Love your videos :D
Glad you like them!
Its funny looking back at these kits as in the 70s and 80s Hasegawa along with Heller were seen as more sophisticated than the run of the mill Airfix, Frog/Novo, Revell and Matchbox offerings. Just goes to show how far the hobby has moved on since then, particularly the remarkable rebirth of Airfix.
Yes, Airfix has managed to turn a lot of things round
Hi Matt. Firstly, so glad to hear you're doing better and good luck with the new job. Secondly, well done on another superb build. I think I built this particular model myself years ago, albeit I built the later version. As you say, still a good little kit despite it's age. Personally, I'm glad you didn't weather this one as sometimes it's just nice to see them as they are! Looking forward to the next build 👍🏻
thanks! :D
I think I built this one too, back then, compared to other kits from the same era this one stood out with having recessed panel lines and looking closer to the real Spit.
Good outcome, I had mixed results when making masks for camo, but seeing how it turned out in this build I will persevere!
You can do it! Other methods i've used a vinyl stickers pre-made from other companies, normal masking tape cut to shape, and sticky-tack
@@ModelMinutes Cheers Matt, I need to refine my curve cutting, then hopefully it will be fine. White Tack was OK but a bit feathery at the edges, however looks OK on the lovely Airfix Tomahawk (another fan).
Great build of an early Mk.1 Spitfire. Hope its now sitting proudly next to your other Spitfires, in your collection. Also, that is a brilliant idea for the camouflage pattern. Scan the instruction sheet into your PC and rescale it to the size of the model. Then print it out making a set of mask templates. Might have to try that out one of these days. Keep up the great work
fortunately for many kits, the instructions are already on scalemates so scanning isn't always a necessary step :)
Great job! Love your use of every day spray paint and your very clear sequencing.
Thank you so much!
Nice clean build. This would be a good beginner's project due to the low parts count. One way to deal with the transfers silvering is to use a sparing amount of the extra thin to the offending area. Treat it like dry-brushing and remove most of the solution when applying, otherwise it can do nasty things to the paint.
Thanks for the tip
Great build; usual older Hasegawa iffy-ness :)
I'd agree with others that going to town with the weathering would be appropriate here.
maybe i will revisit this kit in the future with some weathering
Stretched sprue makes for great cable for antenna. It's a great, cheap and easy way elevate a model
this is a method i've used in the past on many builds
I've been using very fine monofilament fishing line for antenna wires. Not as weak or fragile as stretched spruce and a spool will last for a long time.
What always bugged me about this one was the wing reinforcement strakes above the wheel wells. Now you do see those on some Spitfires in museums, the IWM one being a good example but, as far as I know, those were a late and post-war modification done to some surviving early mark airframes that happened to still be around at that time, mainly those with the early "B" wing.
It’s been ages since I’ve made any scale plane ✈️ but here I am jus trying to figure out how to do it again. (My mother just gave this same exact model)
I hope you enjoy
Your videos are great. Can you build the African campaign tiger tank from tamiya pls.
thanks for the suggestion
Just starting modelling again after a very long hiatus, still using brush with my paints and will have to get primers and varnish. Very helpful in giving me ideas going forward. Any links to where its best to get paints etc?
It really depends on where you are, you can get them from many IRl and online model shops. If brush painting i would recommend the Vallejo paints (with some thinners mixed in) but I do have a video where I talk about my experiences with paints on my channel:
General discussion: ua-cam.com/video/WO0SZ1sGGcs/v-deo.html
Humbrol Gen 2 hand painting test: ua-cam.com/video/1oJCv1iRWQg/v-deo.html
Nice build Matt!
I've come across this masking method, but what percentage increase in size did you use to make the camouflage the correct scale from the smaller instruction sheet?
Perhaps an idea for a future posting?
I actually have no idea, I printed 3 copies at different sizes and picked the closest one
How did you get the Hataka paints to go down so smoothly? I can never get them right, always comes out wet and never seems to dry.
are you mixing them with a thinner of some kind? The ones I used in this video were airbrush ready so other than putting them in the airbrush I didn't do much else
Like. Like. Like! Yes I do like this kit. And your camouflage tip is so simple yet so wonderful I shall certainly be using it and that paint job is my most feared!
Well done yet again!
Bob
England
PS please please centre your models on your turntable as it hurts my eyeballs and triggers my OCD!!
Thanks Bob!
Thanks for this new video. Do you think the method you used for the camouflage is possible with a spray can? I no more use an airbrush.
if you can get the masks to sit flush to the plastic, the spray cans tend to have a lot of pressure so could blow under the paper in the places you dont want it to go
that or spray from further away
@@ModelMinutes Thanks !
Well, I will make a try. I hope that will work :D
Which shops do you buy models from
a wide variety
@@ModelMinutes is it good to buy from Amazon or should I buy from airfix online shop
@@Asdda1515 either really. Amazon offers next day shipping if you have prime which the Airfix site doesn’t. If you sign up for hobby rewards you get points on the airfix site that you don’t get on Amazon
@@ModelMinutes does is it cheaper online on in a store I don’t really know as I’m new to doing models I did a British p50 and now I’m waiting on a British vampire jet starter set gonna try to use shading wish me luck
@@Asdda1515 as with many things, sometimes it’s better to shop around. It may be cheaper in some shops and more expensive in others
the pilot figure looks quite similar to airfix ones
yeah
Nice P51 😮
lol thanks :D
It’s a pity Hasegawa didn’t provide the early two prong pitot probe, then you could build a really early Spitfire.
yeah it is, i'm sure it could be scratch built by someone who wanted that detail though
Not only that, but it has the strenghtening strips on the wings - those were added in late 1941 on very early Mk.Vs before they did it internally (mind you - that predates the Universal wing used on the Vc ).
It was a retrofit for the Mk.IIs still in use with OTU's and other second-line units. The one in the Science Museum is such a retrofit aircraft, and it could very well be Tamiya used that as their template.
i'm glad you pointed that out, I was curious about them @@whtalt92
Can we see some warhammer 40k builds?
quite possibly!
I like building old Hasegawa kits, but this one seems a little primitive for my tastes. The F-5 Freedom Fighter is the same way. Good job nonetheless.
thanks for the info!
I came here from getting gifted a membership so thanks model minutes or whoever gifted me the membership
Crazy Locha was the one who gave out some memberships :D
My question is why so many spit fire doesn't that get kind of boring like the other kits your building I don't do many split fire basically there all the same
sometimes, building a kit you have already done can be fun for various reasons (practice, trying new techniques etc) but not all spitfires are exactly the same - this is from a company I hadn't built before in a slightly different version
Plus, as a review channel, I wouldn't be able to offer much of an opinion on a kit if i only built one example from one company
How boring would life be, if we only did the things we like once...
lol that's true @@intothenight756d47
Twin blade wooden prop. The earliest of the spits
yup
Spitfire vs hurricane
hurricane :P
Interior painting 🙈🙈🙈
it's not like it can be seen . . .
I have 50 vintage model airplanes I would like to sell some. Suggestions?

Hello
hi!
The decals are awful.
they're not great
