    I think you did better on round 2 though I would still say never throw out the original as a reminder. One thing I learned with miniature painting is you always have a nagging suspicion that you are not getting better or skills are not improving so its nice to go back and take one of your first projects and then compare it to your newest. You usually end up blown away at the difference between the two.

    "There's a time and a place for them"....yup...the time was 60 years ago, and the place is in the landfill!!!
    So glad I never spent any money on this kit!
    As a HUGE Mustang fan, I have built many. Airfix is #1 in 1/72...and you can get 3 or 4 of them for the price of the Tamiya P-51(#2).
    At Hobby Lobby, when they're running 40% off model kit...they're about $5 a pop! Can't afford not to walk out with 4 or 5 of em!!!
    My recommendations for those wanting P-51D's...Airfix(the only one that has separate flaps, to pose down), Tamiya, and even the Heller (if memory serves me right) kit is decent.
    Everything else....don't even bother!
    For P-51B/C....Academy's is very nice, but you have to do a little surgery if you want the flaps down. Drawback is...Academy decals suck!

    • @ModelMinutes

      What specifically would you define as "great" about this kit?
      As a review channel I consider the following points when assessing a product:
      Quality of instructions - are the steps cluttered and are the painting instructions in colour?
      Decals - how thick they are, the registration, legibility of text and whether they silver/break up on application
      Mould quality - whether the kit has short shots or excess flash, including visible ejector pin marks
      Accuracy - how well the model is preceived to replicate the true prototype
      Build quality - does the model build up without the use of excessive sanding and filler required?
      Boxing - is it clear how old the tooling is on the box so the buyer can decide whether to purchase?
      The only area I deemed this particular kit to be acceptable was in the decals . . . . Not a "great" kit in this reviewers opinion

    Great job of a tired old kit. I finished the Airfix version recently and it looks so markedly better than this one. Good technique tip on painting the undercarriage up and using the parts as a mask and getting the final paint job on it before setting the undercarriage in position. Will give better effect rather than painting and attaching separately. Will take that into current and future builds.

  • @jeremyalam480
    @jeremyalam480 5 місяців тому +1

    Not bad for a quick build. The finish on the newer build is generally better than for the previous. For the seams at the wing roots, stretched sprue is a good and quick option. Cut approximately to size, insert and fix with extra thin cement. If you want to preserve the rivet detail, mask the surrounding area before sanding. For the ejector pin marks on the lower tail surfaces you can use a rotary hole punch or punch and die set to create circles from thin styrene. This kit would be a good one for a beginner to cut their teeth on. Keep up the good work.

    Looks like you will have to do a 50k sub special soon! Well done. I think the biggest improvements tend to be with the painting process as we learn about avoiding gluey fingerprints early on! The latest build of that kit looks is certainly shows the improvement. Have said before, Revell are sneaky in their marketing. I got a shiny new boxing of HMS Victory but the kit inside was over 65 years old and looked it, the tooling was worn and every part needed a lot of work.

Even now I collect the old Revell 1/72 scale kits but this one should never have been reissued as the front end is completely inaccurate and is really nothing but a toy even back when it was first issued. Back when the molds were first presented to American Revell they knew 60 years ago that this was completely inaccurate. Great video as always.

    Constructive here we come 😁:
    Like the "product used" logo pop in, a) not enough info if standalone, could easily be matched up to the intro "used" screen. Generally people are too lazy to go back afterwards, however, modellers are their own special breed of nerds and would. B) location -- top left or right, center bottom puts too much in center frame, covering the actual use of ( 07:23 ). C) Why shots of product then pop-up during application? Double work, especially if its an additional shot and editing, almost 7 minutes additional footage duplicates. Slow the work footage back down (or additional) if you need to stretch for the voiceover.
    Try using an app to transcribe your voice, some video editing software has it built in for CC purposes, but is super handy for realizing where repeating phrases or key points in successive or nearby sentences. Had a couple of them here and there, mass of commercials broke them up enough to be only slightly noticable 😜.
    Headshots -- some of the jumps in editing were a bit jarring, overall, not too bad. Takes some getting used to and full flow of thought on single take isn't as easy as people think. Script on a monitor next to camera helps, some programs out there to autoscroll as you read if you're comfortable with (not that hard to get used to). Lordy knows i trip over words all the time in public speaking, and use it to self deprecating humor as advantage. Keep at it 👍. Paul's Hardware did a how to of how he uses just a piece of glass in front of the camera to reflect the reversed monitor below to read from if thats more your style.
    Overall story telling -- well done 👍. Its not common in the modelling space, and your voice combined with the overall story will do well. I know the headshots and other things like wardrobe, backdrop, lighting, etc etc are difficulties that have a larger upside potential. Thematically gives a lot of emotional link to the subject, along with different demonstrative expressions that can add to the presentation. It can pack a heck of a punch when you nail them. Should be fun to see the disappointment and disdain on a bad kit. Hopefully equally exuberant on a new kit you're excited about too. Question is, the storytelling mode for just some kits? Most? Can see it being difficult for all kits, maybe with limited face shots unless deserved instead of a forced minimum? That, will be a you developing your style thing.
    Did the extra work payoff? Yes. Yours is a unique style previously, that just went in a new you direction as a tangent in a positive way. The Next Uncle Nightshift? Good chance of it. Not just about the modelling skills, it is about the compelling story that you choose to present. I'll choose to keep watching and supporting and see where this goes!! ☕🐢

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  5 місяців тому +3

      Thanks so much for the constructive feedback! I'm glad that on the whole you think the format changes are a positive idea!
      The product info overlays were originally placed bottom left, but then I moved them to be central to make it harder for any potential copyright thiefs to edit out. The double-handling of the product info was a decision on my part to make it a bit of a transitional element whilst I develop this different style, retaining elements of the older videos and combining them with new parts - I imagine in the future I may drop the clip of the product but who knows.
      I'm going to be making some more progress on smoothing out the editing, i think that i need to play around with this format and see how i can make the cuts easier and more natural.
      I'm still in the process of sorting out my workspace so I'm hoping the background will look better in the future, but that will take a little work on my part.
      Hopefully things will just keep getting better :D

    My experience in 1/72 scale Mustang Ds is one Italeri kit and one Academy kit. I also have Airfix starter set one in my stash. The Italeri was fine, but it had a shallow panel lines, the fuselage/wing joint needed filling, the trailing edge of the wing didn't align well with the fuselage and it had a weird solution for mounting the propeller so I just decided to glue it in place to make painting easier (the rotating propeller isn't really all that important for me). On the plus side, it has existing cooling duct internals and interesting paint/decal options: USAF Korean War, camo RAF and RNZAF. Academy one is better - it has great fit, though I did end up doing only a little bit filling in the fuselage/wing joint, it has option of building it flaps up or down, it has very nice crisp panel lines and riveting that (between primer, color and primer) survived up to 9 total layers of rattle can spray paint of my rather heavy handed brush painting without issue but, on the downside, the internals of supercharger are nonexistent, and the canopy gives slightly "uncanny valley" feeling when looked at from the front (seems to be too wide on top). This Revell kit, I'd say cannot compare to any of the two. I'm looking forward to trying my hand at the Airfix kit, which seems to be an upgrade over the Academy still - more internal details, better canopy, a pilot figure and option of building it wheels up - I'm really tempted to do this one in flight, but I have to figure out some sort of stand for it.
    As far as your build, it only proves that with skills you can get something even out of a tur... challenging kit. If I may offer some critique - the port fuselage/wing joint (I keep using this term in this comment, don't I?) is probably the weakest point of this build. I assume you held back a bit with the sanding to try and save most of the surrounding raised riveting/panel lines? Anyway, in areas like that I think using sandpaper instead of sanding stick would give a better result, because it would form a nice curve when pressed to the wing and fuselage, but that trick only really would work on models with recessed panel lines, as it would destroy any raised detail. I feel like I'm not describing it terribly well, sorry...

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  5 місяців тому

      Yeah, the wing roots were the areas that gave me the most trouble - i'm gonna look at getting some better tools to help me with those. Plus, if I revisit this kit again in the future I might have another area to improve :)

      @@ModelMinutes One thing I also do when sanding down filler, I go at it with 1000 grit from the beginning. Yeah, it is probably an overkill, takes too long and I'm unneccessarily chewing through sandpaper too quickly, but I rarely have to worry about destroying recessed details.

    Pretty work indeed, even if the plastic does remind me of the adage about sows' ears and silk purses. Despite knowing full well what I would be getting, I actually purchased this kit for its transfer sheet with a view to applying them to the most recent Airfix offering. I remember when I thought the original 1958 Airfix kit was the business. That would have been in the early '70s, before the release of the 1974 tooling.

      Yes, well, perhaps revell won't retool it seeing as there are plenty of better kits out there and i'm not sure we need another P51D in 1/72...

    I attempted to build this kit as an easy cheap way of getting back into modelling.
    I gave up on it when I couldn't even make out the shape of the propeller with the amount of flash on it. I had to hold it up to the light repeatedly during sanding just to try and see if I was getting close to the actual shape.
    The final straw came when I offered the wings up to the fuselage and found you could drive a 1/35 scale panzer tank through the gap!!
    I've watched a few videos of revell kits and I haven't seen one yet that doesn't have parts that look like they've been carved out of soap!
    Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent revell kit please?

      I've got a number of revell build videos on my channel - the Lancaster is generally ok (but supposedly has some shape issues) and the b17 was a lot of fun (but had loads of flash). The 1/32 Hurricane is objectively fine but is expensive for what is a rather simple kit at a larger scale

      @ModelMinutes  5 місяців тому

      most of my videos have the tips in them, but in a nutshell -
      Take your time
      Test the fit of the parts before you glue them together
      Small parts can be painted before adding them to the model
      Don't be tempted to mess with the model whilst the glue or paint is drying
      It takes time and practice and every model you build you get a little better - hang in there :)

      depends on the kit. revell has a lot (a lot) of really old tooling. They bought the old Monogram lines too, and those kits are as old as i am(58). But they also have some new stuff. Use ScaleMates to see which. I will tell you that the newer revell 1/72 tanks are incredibly complicated and detailed. I made the T-90 1/72scale, and it is way over complicated with over 200 parts on a chassis thats 2 and 1/2 inches long, i.e. the Dazzler cubes are 3mm square and built up of 5 super tiny parts.

    Seen a few 'worst kit builds' recently, and the thing that I notice most of all is the lack of reference, attempts to improve the kit or detail, building the entire kit before painting almost anything, and most of all, the cross-kitting that would improve any kit.
    These older kits are cheaper than modern, and any knowledge of the history of a company making kits would tell you what you are getting before laying down any money.
    The internet removes much of the chance of this knowledge, so here we go.
    Revell was a later comer to kit making, out-performing earlier makers like Strombecker and Hawk. Kits got smaller ( usually 1/48th or random box-size scales before then ), and the early to mid 1960s were the heyday of the large numbers of small kits sold, which is where Airfix came in.
    Revell made many kits with excellent paintings of the planes on them, in small boxes, and these were the kits everyone of my generation learnt on, and would later use as the raw material for their own projects.
    It was not unusual to find two or more kits frankensteined together to make a more accurate whole or a mark of particular plane that hadn't been marketed yet.
    In later years, the 'most accurate drawing fallacy' began, then the 'draw the panel lines on' fallacy, then later still, the 'latest kit is best' fallacy as well.
    The arguments there were over the drawings being best, when the makers had laser-scanned an actual plane and made their model from that, oh my.
    From this, we have people deciding an older, cheaper, simpler kit as worse than one cost three or more times as much money, with many parts ( most of which must be replaced by aftermarket parts for some reason ), but with better-researched paint and transfers / decals.
    The kit is the starting point, so parts that are dimensionally close are all that's required.

    • @ModelMinutes

      As someone who reviews model kits, one of my criteria is to measure the model against the standards of the day. If a kit company marks it as vintage or has a clear tooling date etc on it, then that is taken into consideration.
      If a company does not, and is happy to peddle ancient toolings alongside new ones, then I will call them out and treat the model as if it is recent and draw my conclusions there.
      Fixing every problem of the model during the build defeats the point of a review in my eyes. Why spend more money and time dressing up a bad kit when I could spend slightly more and get a decent one to start with that doesn’t need all this extra work.
      I’d be doing my viewers a disservice if I sugar coated a kit with an eye on nostalgia and hid its many flaws

It is one of the most inaccurate kits I have ever seen. Your time and skills are wasted on this kit. If you want to build vintage kits look into Monogram or Hasegawa. They're not as good as today's kits but they are reasonably accurate and worth the effort because you really can get good results. With this kit, no matter how well you build it, it is rubbish.
