- This is hilarious! You won't find this anywhere else on UA-cam: Tommy Emmanuel plays the ultimate version of Classical Gas, accompanied by the Endless Road String Quartet and introduced by a random medley from classical to country to rock'n'roll to pop and surf guitar, from Mozart to Harry Lime, from Chuck Berry ("Johnny B. Goode") to Buddy Holly ("Peggy Sue") to Pink Panther and Dueling Banjos, from Bonanza to Bond, from Shadows to Ventures.
Trying to keep pace with him is the Endless Road String Quartet from Lexington/Kentucky (left to right):

ya know, we need to give the ladies on the strings props for hanging in there and having fun with it as well. As a musician friend once told me, "We play for free, we get paid for traveling, setting up and tearing down."
This is why Tommy is one of the greatest shows on Earth! Loved his album with Chet Atkins and there will never be another, but Tommy is always awesome!
A masterful showman and one incredible axe man. Tens of thousands of hours of sheer practice and innovation from one of the genius's of our time. Thanks Tommy for showing us what the other side of life looks like.
It happens rarely...
...but, occasionally, highly-trained, virtuosic, "legit" talents are successfully encouraged by a virtuoso of a different sort to leave the Conservatory behind them, throw caution to the winds, and just blow.
It happens here:
As far as I can put it together, the Endless Road String Quartet has been hired to back Tommy Emmanuel up on a great arrangement of one of his signature pieces, "Classical Gas;" Tommy, ebulliently virtuosic entertainer that he is, can't let them get off that easy, so he goes into a multi-musical-quote extended intro (with a couple of false starts for the intended piece), to get their full attention and get them fully engaged; by the time he gets to "Johnny B. Goode," the string quartet is playin' the Blues.
And so, at around 7:23, they begin to play the arrangement on their stands (which they were hired to play in the first place) and they are so warmed up, they chew it up in an incendiary manner.
The only gift Tommy Emmanuel can ever give us that equals his stunning musicianship is the gift of getting to watch him enjoy himself in front of a crowd, as he bestows that musicianship upon them:

From about 7:00 and onwards i just sat there, frozen, in my chair, with a stupid grin on my face, clenching my belly. That's how good it was!

The Endless Strings were amazingly good natured about the whole thing!
the important thing is that Tommy didn't spoil this special moment by hamming it up too much!
he's got superb stage presence.

I saw Tommy live years ago - got a standing ovation after a 3 hour show with just an acoustic guitar. Never forgot that. This is absolutely masterful. hats off to the string section, stunning collaboration.

I have played guitar for 40 years, and this? I have no other words.
I feel the same way , I'm better than most people in this neighborhood but he puts famous people to shame , set a side all that silly as joking , I'd like to hear Classical gas just from start to finish , its too good of a song to break up and joke around with and I want hear that James Bond from start to finish. I don't think he's human or he's from the future.

+crasowl I'm with you on this one. Tommy obviously is a talented individual, but he's gotten to where he is through sheer hard work and dedication. He's an amazing inspiration to many.
Tommy talks over and over about the importance of practising EVERY DAY! There is no mystery to it...Hours and hours of practice..Learning the fundamentals and then expanding upon them ...every single day!!! Show me a SINGLE person who has been "blessed" with the ability to play guitar at this level without needing any practise!
