My brother who is a master carpenter and shipbuilder taught me a trick with sawing melamine. It is to run a Stanley knife across the cut line several times using a metal rule as a guide and make sure it is well clamped.
And masking tape on cutting line helps a bit too. At least on veneered surface works pretty well. In stores cutting service we had format saw table. With 2 discs, small precut and lot teeth big one. Regular sharpening discs of course , expecially after plywood or osb cutting. If possible, for melamine sheets or chipboard worktop, seperate disc.

(normally I would have bought that melamine in the color I needed but that was not worth the trouble for a piece of 40 by 15 cm. I started as you did, sanding. But I did not sand it manually. I have an angle grinder with a sanding-disk-add-on-thingy and that I used. I only underestimated the strength of it. In no-time the whole melamine layer was gone. That was good because now I had classical chipboard which absorbs paint very easily. The big down-side was that I did it in my workshop. So I had Christmas in June. Everything and everywhere were white particles of melamine.

Gosforth Handyman zinsser bin is shellac based but the zinsser 123 is water based , ive used the 123 without any problems but I must admit I've not used the bin , ive heard good things about it though.
I've used BIN extensively as a primer on all sorts of materials......except melamine. Just never tried it but I imagine it would work well. It is as already stated shellac based and the solvent in it is methylated spirit. It dries super quick so multiple coats can be built up in a relatively short time on absorbent surfaces like plywood. It rolls on with a foam roller really nicely and is very easy to sand smooth once dry with fine grit paper. It sticks like poop to previously glossed paintwork with minimal prep. We used it to prime glossed pine skirting that hadn't had the knots treated beforehand and were bleeding through the gloss something rotten. One coat of BIN before new undercoat and gloss sorted it for good. It is extremely thin though so messy to use if not careful. Clean brushes, splashes, hands, dogs tails etc. with meths. Don't try to clean roller sleeves. It cost more in meths than it's worth. I wrap my roller in a freezer bag between coats then chuck the sleeve at the end. Great video Andy as usual. Never tried the Leyland acrylic. Must give it a go. 👍

Can you put veneer over in instead of painting
Which paint colour is this??? Also I'm based in the North East - if someone wanted to get in touch with you regarding work how would you do it?? Thanks
Could i paint a kitchen worktop using the same method of a good primer & eggshell colour coat ?
Kay try a peel and stick wrap instead. They sell by the roll. Countertops will chip over time
Hi any tips on how to smooth out fuzzy kichen cupboards
once its painted, could you put some sort of seal on it to try and get back that original surface just for added protection over time, as im looking into making a desk sort of thing to sit over my bed
also, what do you recommend doing about exposed edges? can iron on melamine edging be used?
Hi! Thanks for the video. Really well explained!
Would appreciate a tip for my project - I also want to paint melamine wardrobe doors. But I was planning to use spray paint, as I need gloss finish and it’s much more even from spray application. What spray primer would you recommend as using a roll on primer defies the object of the spray paint.
Many thanks!
Rust oleum makes a spray primer that can be used on plastic.
New sub here. Thanks for the tips. I am going to be doing new shelves and everything is melamine unless you want to shell out the gold!!!
What was the top coat did you use for the melamine
How scratch resistant is this afterwards?
I built a custom L desk with round corners came out really nice for my first project, but the trimmer I pressed to hard and the bevel ripped in to much and slightly exposed some particle board.
What would you use to paint discoloured unit carcasses, not the doors.
What Dulux paint are you using?
He says it out loud with his mouth 😂😂
@@dunbardunelm3924 so just say it
Use Zinsser BIN as a basecoat on Melamine, much easier and much better adhesion straight away, it is an amazing paint.
Using the Zinsser Bin, then painting matte black over white... would you guys trust this finish for an outfeed/ assembly table top finish?
@@FruitfulForest77 I'm not sure what function this outfeed/assembly table serves so can't really comment, and even though the Zinsser is very hard wearing, it would depend on the kind of paint you're using for your matte black top coat.
What's a good roller to use for this kind of work?
Debating whether to remove the melamine or paint it. If I remove it will I be left with a mess of glue residue? Anyone ever try to strip melamine off the shelve boards instead of painting them? Could this be done with a hot air gun or an iron? Seen many videos on stripping the doors/face of cabinets but have not come across any video where people are stripping the white shelves themselves. Any suggestions are deeply appreciated. Thanks and God bless 🕊️
Hey! can I do computer desk too??😅😁
Great video with some really handy tips as usual. I am going to be ‘that guy’ though and point out that you’ve got the Union flag in the background hanging upside down. 🇬🇧😉
Ian Phillip ha ha - see reply to Zero Company 👍😂
Not sure how it is upside down... Not my flash, so I can't tell. It's symmetrical.....

Do I sand softly between the two top coats mate?
I want to paint my melamine ceiling is ar9und 20sq i cant find melamine primer in my island
What paint did you use for the top coat? I'm having real trouble with my cupboards! And no realised they are melamine wood after watching this. I have started with chalk paint! But it looks terrible. Please help!!
I'm using Dulux Trade quick dry Satinwood for this. Nothing will be as hard wearing as melamine though. 👍
The stuff is crap if you dissect it however it’s the cheapest material to buy & your painting tip is cool, cheers mate 🍻👍
👍🍺😀
No final clear poly finish needed?
I’m purchasing an Ikea PAX cabinet that I’ll be using for a display cabinet for Sideshow figures. Can anyone advise me on the best way forward so that I do not make any errors?
Awesome video mate. My current kitchen is melamine. So 100grit, acrylic primer, then paint?
Would this work if i used a rose gold emulsion on the ikea lack shelves? If i primed it first
Did you paint your ikea shelf? My daughter wants hers painted
This was so helpful! Thank you!
Fantastic video Thanks for sharing your know how.
What type of rollers are you using??
