I've watched a ton of reviews on this bag but none of them hit all the points I was looking for. Until now. Great review, thanks for taking the time to do it.
I LOVE this sleeping bag. I've had it for 4 years and it is still truckin'. I've had it down to about 40 degrees and been very warm. I use it like a quilt. It packs down so small and fits well into my goal to be as light as possible when backpacking. I have a Mountain Hardware bag that is a great bag but it is twice as heavy and takes up a lot more room in my pack. I highly recommend this bag for it's light weight and warmth as long as you don't go below 40 degrees.
I have one of these in the Large size, so it's a little roomier. Works great if you put on all your layers. That's what makes it work. Then I have a space blanket to cover, if I ever need it. There's always trade-offs when you go ultra light.
I agree. I bought this last year and while I've only had it out a few times have been happy with it so far. I use mine as a quilt in my hammock like you, but also as a bag when I'm on the ground. TIP #1: I found myself getting a little chilly a couple times when it was only in the 50s. I finally held the bag up to the light and could see the down had shifted. So check it periodically, give it a shake here and there and you can easily move the down back where you need it. TIP #2: When I got mine, I took a tip from another reviewer who washed their bag in Nikwax Down Wash. Like her, I did find the loft had improved. She found the warmth improved from previous outings. I hadn't used mine yet so I couldn't compare but better loft is always better! Should probably wash it (properly) once a season anyway. Good job on the review; concise and straight-up.
Good review. I've owned one for a little over a year and use it like a quilt. The quality is good for the price and I love the light weight. I've had it down to about 45 degrees and was warm. Most of my backpacking is in southern California so I rarely need a warmer bag. I use my old 2.5 pound down Mountain Hardware bag for colder weather. I highly recommend this bag as part of an ultralight set up.
Great video bud! I have the black version for a few years, and I love it for the price, versatility and compact ability! I’ve personally had it out in single digit temperatures (not planned) got trapped in a blizzard, but with warm layers on I stayed decently warm! Given the the windy and snowy elements this bag impressed me for only being advertised as a 3 season bag!
I have a black Aegismax envelope style down sleeping bag and have used it at down to 3 Celsius as a top quilt in a hammock and I got hot. Very happy with it.
I agree that the Aegismax bag is definitely worth the money! I have used it down into the low 40's with only a base layer and was very comfortable. I am a bigger guy but feel as though the bag is quite roomy. The only down side to the bag for me is the 1/2-3/4 length zipper. Which makes it a bit harder to get in and out of, especially in the middle of the night when nature calls. But this is one great bag especially for the money. - Mark
Great Review! I have the same bag you reviewed only in black. I am 5'10'' - 230 and the bag fits me just fine. I have taken the bag down to the low 40's with base layer and fleece pullover and not been cold. Not sure if I would trust it's warmth into the 30's without a jacket. But I agree, it's an awesome bag for the money!
Not sure if this has been mentioned in the comments, but your imperial measurements given for the sleeping bag aren't really helpful to people outside the US. A simple mention of the metric conversions embedded into the video could really help broaden the video's appeal.
I'v used mine for a year. Great bag. Would definitely recommend. I would not take it out if under 40 degrees. With a liner I had it down to 25, but I was pretty cold.
Hey Brothers - thanks for being a warm sleeper. On the amazon page it shows you can buy two and zip them together; that seems unlikely from this side of the screen. I'm guessing you guys don't cuddle much, but my brother is a girl and we'd be interested, if that's possible. Any insight?
Yes, we haven’t tested any of their gear, but a friend got some Teton gear a few years ago when he was first getting into backpacking. It seemed to serve him well. Nothing was very lightweight but it was functional and certainly priced for a budget.
I agree with your verdict. I bought it because it's lightweight and cheap. The construction isn't the same quality as the $300-500 bags and the zippy is difficult, but heck man its $75. I camped in northern MN in May and was toasty warm in the mid 30s with running tights, my puffy coat and a hat. I bought the long version and I was able to pull it up over my head. And I'm 6'3" so its plenty long to more or less do what a high-priced mummy bag does.
Curious what's the lowest you pushed this bag without a liner and minimal layers? Also no biggie but is that a big tear in the fabric around the 1:50 mark and if so do you no how you did it or how long you owned the bag before that happened?
That's not a tear, it's actually just a loop. We both have these now and they have held up well, given the fact that we take care of them. The fabric is definitely very thin so you can't be too rough. I wouldn't take it any lower than the 45 degree rating without any other clothing or liners to add warmth.
@@BackpackerBrothers I'm 177cm (5'10) and was reading different sizes from different sources (some say 170, some 180 and some 185) so as I'm somewhere on the border of the two was wondering if I can get away with the shorter/lighter version. What are your thoughts despite the recommendations?
MarinosCh I have the green, I believe the black is bigger. I’m about six feet and the green has plenty of room from my feet to over my shoulders easy. I don’t know the measurements but I have a big chest and shoulders. There’s more room up top all closed up than my O” f bag which is 34 inches wide. Surprisingly roomy
I picked up the green for my scout son. The black I thought was a longer version His did have a smell. A week at camp it had a different smell. Great vid. Thanks guys.
@@BackpackerBrothers I bought a Regular size but it didn't arrive yet. In the website says that it's 1,80m. I'm 1,78m, I hope the regular size fits me. hahhaha
Pete was using an underquilt. The 3-season, regular Wooki underquilt made by Warbonnet Outdoors. It's a 20 degree quilt and specifically made to fit the Warbonnet Blackbird hammock that Pete uses.
I actually did the top quilt mod to 2 of them that my daughter & I use while backpacking. Works well into the 40's for us & I've stretched it with a down jacket into the upper 20's, but it'll be chilly for sure.
I bet the down was "harvested" with great care for 70 some bucks..... Have a look at how its done, and you wont be abe to sleep at night in your cheap sleeping bag.
This clap trap about _live plucking_ ducks to get down is self serving conspiracy crap put out by the _Big Name Dealers_ to justify the sky high prices they charge. Guess what???? Chinese people eat a lot of *Peking Duck,* there is no reason at all for them to _live pluck_ ducks when they have tons of down from dead ducks that got eaten. I eat duck myself _yum._
I don't recommend at all this product... First of all, the seller (Offical) send the product with multiple damages, there was no customer care at all, as the product was damaged, I went to check the Down Fill quality, it's extremely bad, most of them is a poor and thin synthetic material, AegisMax uses fake filling...
everyone seems to like to do sleeping bag video but nobody shows what they do in the heat of the summer. Just last night the temp was 73F at about 2am. I don't need a blanket at that temp. I don't even need a sheet.
This is a pretty good summer sleeping bag depending on where you’re hiking. For example in northern climates or high altitude, lows in the 40s are very feasible in summer. But you bring up a good point. In hot temps where the lows are mid 70s, you’d probably just be unzipping this bag.
I'm in Florida and it gets warm during the summer ( triple digits for a day time heat index) The nights during the summer will be the temps you mentioned or higher. My preferred sleeping cover is the Silk Cocoon Travel Sheets in a Hammock. I like the regular size ones but they do have mummy shaped ones. Not sure if it is psychological but the silk feels cooler in the heat. They also have cotton ones but I don't like to have cotton when camping because of the high humidity. I started with the regular size cotton and switched over to the Silk.
That’s a great idea. We both have sleeping bag liners that we occasionally use in lower temps. In the kinds of temps you’re talking about, those would be great as standalone insulation, and also really breathable which helps in humidity.
For hot summer, you need a hammock. If there are bugs you need a net over the hammock. Set up where you can get some breeze. If no bugs are out, toss aside the net. The net traps a lot of heat. Sometimes, I wet down a large bandana and lay it over me or use a spray bottle of plain water to dampen myself. In high humidity, you're just screwed. I grew up in the West Texas ranch country and lived for several years in Africa near the equator.

Is this the regular version? How tall are you if I may ask?
Pete it’s 5’10”. Aegismax recommends the regular for someone up to 5’7” and the large for someone up to 6’3”. Regular is 180cm and large is 200cm.

I would go for the large, it maybe be an lunch or so difference but it will be worth making sure you have enough space and length.

How tall are you?? is that the Medium that you reviewed or the Large one??

I'm looking for a smaller bag to go inside my big STS Basecamp bag for Aconcagua. It gets down to -30C I believe... I think I've found it! Thanks!
Great! Good luck out there.
Lack of a hood is a dealbreaker. They make such a difference in keeping as much of your body heat as possible inside the bag.
Not for me, I use quilts that dont have hoods and you just put something else on your head. This sleeping bag is perfect for warm weather.
I personally use the black version of this sleeping bag and I love it!
Nice! Is that the same bag, or a different temp rating?
Backpacker Brothers I believe it’s the same, just a different color! Great video!

Cool, did it work well for him?
Love these bags. I bought 2. In conjunction with S2S reactor liner and SOL bivi I've got into the negative C temps comfortably.
Nice. That’s legit.
I have the same setup though a different sleeping bag. Might try this one though to cut down weight further.
Interesting. When u say u bought 2, you mean u use one inside the other plus the liner plus the s2s? Or just bought a second one for someone else?
ShinobiTobosaku i bought the original and the M2 version. One for me and the wife.
What size did you got? Fits on you?
Size regular, but if you’re 5’8” or above we would recommend the large.

So around freezing? I’d say no, unless you are heavily layered.

Another great video
Thanks!
Thanks
I might have to think about that. Compact size for that price - almost too good to pass up.
It definitely seems to hit a sweet spot in price and features.
it's better to put the money towards a 800 treated down quilt. it could be 14oz and you can chise a spotted camo.
Joke?
Buy the costco's down quilt it look like it would have more loft.
Thanks for the suggestion. Is it just called the Costco Down Quilt?
Backpacker Brothers It is the double black diamond quilt. There are lots of UA-cam videos on it, particularity for hammock camping.
Thanks! Will check it out.

Marshcatgear.com sells similar down bags for cheap too.
👍
The only problem that I had with this sleeping bag was is I have very wide shoulders and yeah had to use it as a quilt
Were you using it in a hammock?
Backpacker Brothers no I actually used it with my sleeping pad
Got it. Thanks!
I love mine and it did not smell
I asked you to stand on it so I can see how lofty it is. Can you please add a clip in where you do so?
We can’t actually edit a video once it’s uploaded. We’ll try to see if there’s another way to show that when we get a chance!

can you show this feature please
