I love your comment, "Novels aren't about telling a longer story. They're about telling a bigger story."

Well, whatever I wrote is officially dead.

Great advice. What's killing my rom-coms is lack of external plot. Having a strong voice, and character growth is great, but my endings are weak because there's no rewarding goal other than my dudes smooching. I need to work on the bigger story too.

I really like your videos - even though I'm mostly writing short stories right now I can always find good points to implement!

Flash fiction, short story and novel writer here. Just because you have room in a novel doesn’t mean it belongs. I've seen that in published novels....why is it in there? Why is this thing 100k words then?

2:11 OK I am having some Deja vu here. I have heard these exact words in this section before on some other writing channel. I know I have. I can’t remember where. I mean maybe the words aren’t EXACTLY like what I heard before but pretty damn close.
Or… maybe it was just Deja vu.

I may be misattributing this trick to Hemingway, but a trick I try to use to manage complexity is to know in my head all the reasons for my characters' motivations, but to disclose only the bare minimum to make it make sense.

Do you post your writing anywhere? Where can I read it?

As much as I appreciate Brandon Sanderson, I do wish he would follow some of this advice regarding "every scene needs a purpose".

I don’t think ever scene does
Sometimes I just like the characters hanging out with some slice of life, specially in a long running series
As long as the dialogue is snappy and it’s fun they can just go to the shops together between story beats and it’s fun

@@TheRoleplayer40kbut that in and of itself has purpose. The purpose in those slice of life moments is clearly to build the relationships of the characters. Every scene having purpose doesn’t just mean have every scene push the plot forward.

Has anyone noticed that putting a real person into your book makes you care about them more?

I’ve read so much slop that I no longer believe in the publishing industry. I write to create a work of beauty that pleases me

Same, it's all cringe teenage girl taming macho men drama. Even adult stories.
