Yes fluids are cheap insurance compared to engine rebuilds. That EJ was actually a fairly low mileage engine, 147,000kms (about 90,000miles) from a little old ladys car. The problem occurred because it wasn;t doing much driving it was just so long between services the coolant was degrading through age rather than mileage.
