Logic Pro X - How To Get A Good DI Bass Tone

  • Hi everyone! In this video I demonstrate a few processes to get a good sounds from a DI bass. This is a bass that has been recorded directly into Logic, not through a microphone set up on an amp. I have used some EQ, compression and a Logic bass amp simulator. This is all completely subjective of course, and the tone you may be after could sound completely different! But these are some good starting points, regardless.
    I hope you find this video useful, any questions or comments are greatly appreciated!

    Whether you like or dislike Joe's method, he cuts to the chase and gets straight to it. I find that British/English UA-cam tutorials are often more digestible. Americans are usually running most videos and tend to over-explain everything, right down to the fact their Air-con has been playing up recently... and other fluff. Nobody gives a frog's cock about anything other than the information they were looking for.

    Im a begginer in using Logic. and always wondering why my bass tone sucks. I just record it plug and play. But after watching this video, it changed my life. Love it. Thanks for this man! Continue making vids like this. It helps a lot of people. God bless man!

    Deffo a subjective thing, but to my ear, the more you played with the sound, the worse it was getting! The end product sounded like I was listening through the bedroom wall to my neighbour playing....

    I've just been working on one of my tracks for my 3rd EP, although it's my 3rd, it's my first time doing a lot of the production work myself. I have been scrolling through videos trying to find a clear and concise way to create a "warm" bass tone. I can't believe I never thought to use a bass amp preset 🤦🏼‍♂️ These steps were super helpful, and you've set it up in such a way that ANYONE can play around with the different frequencies to get desired tone. Thanks for your help!

    after the first touch of EQ cleanup, i send it to an aux, take the highs of bass to a stereo spread while keeping the original bass channel mono with sub initiating plugins (like Waves Rbass) and top it off with an SSL Comp and then finally use the FFEQ to analyse and tweak anything necessary. you get bith stereo highs while subby lows. works for me.

      Hey, I just followed your advice with INFINITELY better results than from this tutorial. The method in this video scoops the mids very drastically, but the result isn't quite a desirable smooth, creamy bass (think Beatles Dear Prudence), but more like, as another commenter said, like listening through the wall to someone playing bass in the next room. Click Read More if you're interested in a recap.
      As per Xufi Nawaz's recommendation, I used the following channel strip set-up:
      Plugins:
      Bass Amp (Warm preset, tinkered to your liking)
      Sub bass (boost low frequencies between 50 to 200, maximum wetness. Tinker with it to avoid dissonance.)
      Compressor (Studio FET, 2:1 ratio, a little makeup, long release time - this gives a fatter, more consistent sound to the notes played)
      Channel EQ
      Send to Auxiliary bus, start with about 50% signal.
      Aux channel strip:
      Channel EQ: Hard cut out all the lows up to 150 hz, knee frequencies 150 to 400, lightly boost remain highs.
      Spreader: Rate .250 hz; Intensity 30%; Channel Delay 42 sam; Mix 100%
      Benefit of this method is that you get crisp, dynamic high ends and warm, full, creamy lows. AND you can easily adjust between them, by easing off on the Aux send signal, or lessening the sub bass etc. Having two channels to balance your mix lets you achieve crazy full results.
      By the way, absolutely no disrespect to the author of this video! Thanks for making this tutorial and, like he said, tone and mix are largely a matter of preference! Just thought I'd share what I found.

      @@brendanjames9793 thank you so much describing it so well. one thing i would like to add is that the method can be experimented with the width of stereo of the highs as per individual needs. thanks a lot again Brendan! appreciate it a lot.

    If I use that logic amp preset with my standard jazz bass and mi apogee interface, i need to bring compression to minimum and sounds totally diferent

  • @Cloud-xw8nk
    @Cloud-xw8nk Рік тому

    Unfortunately I think it sounded much better before you started fiddling with it. You added way too much muddy low end, so much so that it sounded like it was underwater. Your compression choked it (too fast). Strange choice to add a FET at the end. That would have been better to knock peaks first, then level out with a more gentle compressor after.

    • @MadisonEmery
      @MadisonEmery 4 роки тому +3

      Uh what makes you think this is the bass line of a song or that there are other instruments? 4 to 1 he just wrote that (pretty gnarly) riff just for this video. Also, a little bit of nuance never hurt anyone; even though I agree that I wouldn't take this final product per say, there were still like valuable practices shown & explained in the video. It's not all or nothing, especially with someone that can actually make videos of this high a quality in the first place

    • @JoesLogic
      @JoesLogic  4 роки тому +7

      That's absolutely fine, there's no reason you should use it if you don't like it :) I like the end result so thought I would share, and it's a good tone to use to practise with. It COULD have been demonstrated with other instruments, but I chose against that, there are countless examples in songs where the bass is isolated, and to give a better understanding of what each parameter does, I thought having it isolated would be a better option :) I hope you find what you're looking for elsewhere!
      Cheers
      Joe

      Joe's Logic on hindsight I owe you a sincere apology. It was extremely rude of me to criticise you in such a manner. Specially when you’ve took the time and effort to help people. UA-cam needs people like yourself. While the end result wasn’t my taste I had no right to say it so rudely. I did however learn a few tips. Please accept my apology and continue with your passion.
