  • The recent Project CARS 3 debacle got me thinking - why are communities for arcade and simulation racing games so different? What makes sim racing appealing, and what makes some not so interested? In this video I discuss what I think about sim racing vs. arcade racing games.

I'm on the same boat as you, really. I enjoy both for their own individual benefits. There's as much fun to be had in sims as there are in arcade racers IMO. Both genres are made for different audiences, after all. But I'm also glad we have stuff like GT, Forza, GRID and soon, Project CARS 3 where they combine the best of both worlds and I hope it continues, honestly.

I'm glad I grew up playing the variety of racing games I did growing up. Gran Turismo 3, NFS Carbon, Flatout 2, Burnout 3, Forza Motorsport 4, Split Second, Forza Horizon 1, Midnight Club 1... I've just always been able to get so much enjoyment from pretty much any racing game with good physics. That being said, I don't think I've ever played a REEEEAL Sim game, and the closest I've ever gotten was probably TOCA Race Driver 3 on the PS2. I'd love to try one at some point, but I just don't have the kind of money to spend on a decent rig to get the 'proper' experience.

For me personally , I don't have a controller ( or a wheel for that matter ). So i play on keyboard , so sim racing can become quite repetitive after some time. It is fun , but it's just not it for me. On mobile real racing 3 is quite fun and i used to play it at times.
If you consider arcade games like nfs heat. It has a sense of progression. You can get into the story , its great. There's so many crazy stuff to do and then there's cops like it's an adrenaline rush all around. An on top of that , customization. There's just something about customizing cars like crazy that you can't in real life. It is not hard if you porpousfully leave a lot of safety margin, and slowly build up the pace to learn the limits of your setup, however that means you will be performing like shite for quiet a long time.
Or you can try and push yourself early, and in that case you will spin a lot.
Sims completely fail to tutor you, and give positive reinforcement, its something you invest 100 hours into on your own to be halfway capable of not endangering the fun of others.
Simcade and assists might be a possible gateway, but thats one more thing to invest energy into.

@@A-BYTE64 As a person who mainly plays arcade racers, while I agree with you on the fact that far too many racing games nowadays are leaning more towards sim physics, you arent helping by being toxic towards the sim community. Both types of games have their charm, and the argument of telling them to drive a real car is not too smart, like you think an average Joe can just hop into a GT3 car whenever he wants? I think both communities need to set aside their differences, by being toxic this is what leads the sim community to hate the arcade community as well. At the end of the day, we all play for the thrill of the speed and to chase perfection.

I cannot drive well in sim games. I would 100% be faster around a real track in a real car than in the sim and the reason for that without real feedback from the car it's hard to judge what it's actually doing. In a sim racer I would need of those crazy g force simulating rigs to even come close to the level of feedback a real car gives you but with just a wheel or just a controller it's just not possible to know what the car is doing. In a sim racer it feels like I'm always trying to figure out what the physics engine will do, rather than driving the car. I have to try to figure out what's going on with the car and track logically from knowing the physics rather than intuitively from feeling the car on track. For this reason I prefer arcade racers and for a more "realistic" experience I'll do sim-cade instead. For me, trying to drive realistically with no information from the car is just not fun, it's just babying the car and usually I end up overcooking it at some point anyway.

I just personally don't think of racing sims as "games" (some people gets mad when I say this). I just think _most_ of them as just that, a "simulator" for racing.
I very much get the appeal of racing sims, trying to be as immersive and making an experience as close to real life as possible is awesome. But most of the motivation to play a sim comes intrinsically like "I just want to be a better driver" or "I want to memorize this track) and for the life of me I just couldn't use those long enough to continue playing them.
What I truly love are actual racing "games", I want progressions, some cheap goals for me to strive towards, dumb medals and rewards for me to get, funky/unique setting or premise, and maybe some cheesy story on the side.
If I were to compare and make an analogy with these 2 genres, racing sims would be a sandbox that could only be as good as you make it to be and traditional racing games would be a theme park where it will only be as good as the devs envisioned (and of course develop) it to be.

I started playing asphalt 8, then got the crew, the got forza horizon 4, and then got project cars 2, slowly getting more realistic with each game. Equipment can also be a bit expensive, so it is important to ask yourself if this is something you want to spend time and money on.

Both offer either a physics, music, explosions/intensity, career structure, circuit limits or open space/more open space on the core path and ability to go off track in arcade in rally or flatout/burnout. Different goals, different energy, different fun factor of restrictions. Open city highways/closed off ones. Open roads, closed off. Then underdog championship goal to a street ranking credit.
Serious or explosions, weapons, lifestyle/culture. More action movie then real car racing expectations even if via menus and events and sometimes story.
Music in Sims are a big part after the races and energy in the race. What because the licensed songs and vibes are different. I love the menu music of Sims not arcade because mostly aren't good cool off music between races or more than intense licensed songs. Licensed vary and most I don't care for in either.
Doing a cone event versus a time attack, drift, point a to b, destroy objects, elimination, zones, weapon, touge and more vary between arcade and Sims.
I forget about the audience on track sometimes but they can be lifeless.
Or some people want a Flatout minigames, or AI/derby moments. Or driving a sofa in Wreckfest because why not.
In terms of driving I find driving in real life harder and less fun then racing games. Whether my favourites that are somewhat arcade/simcade and I get used to elements of Sim racers always played them and the odd arcade of Outrun 2006 or Grid simcade to later MotorStorm, Driveclub, OnRush, PGR 1-4, Fuel, WipEout/F Zero, and many more.
The community is very particular. I agree but at the same time I do find I seek old/new ideas then just the same games or specifics. But yes the old/young can be seen as such. Whether 20+ maybe 30-40 year Olds in Sim community maybe versus whichever type in arcade.
Wheels are fine but yeah don't care to always use my wheel.
But yes intimidating even if depends on the side of the platform.
Funny bit there but ah. I think yeah Forza/GT are Sim but not deep as iRacing or others of course let alone annual ones like F1/MotoGP/WRC.
I do think the career modes were bad for 8th gen is an issue because the content/structure can likely bore people. The bowling, cone challenges in Forza Motorsport, I guess even GTI Club Tomatoes, Bomb hot potato, soccer, more silly can be more appealing with mode personality then just racing and other such are probably more appealing to casuals or core gamers the way they were in the 2000s.
I mean car soccer is what rocket league is after all. Besides lifestyle open world games. Yet Sims PC the GT/Forza Motorsport seems to offer some like the fuel, cone and more but it's kind of 30/40% of the game maybe 20% so it depends. Or they don't even notice those mode types. How someone ignores Forza Motorsport 3&4 if hillclimbs, cone challenges and bowling exist. Sure it's like 3 rows of the list of events but I mean they are there.
Wreckfest it's a mix of derby, racing and such but it's also very few times a bus, sofa, tractor kind of thing in them. Like the brief minigames in Flatout.
Outrun 2006 makes sense to just drive, do the tasks of gates, avoiding cars, hitting them, coins, gauging speed and more, get the cars/music/tracks and such as a bonus.
    More out there ideas
I mean Sims bore me because the dealerhsyof PGR2, Sega GT car builder or Apex even. Shell designs of Supercar Street Challenge (arcade) among other ideas get left behind and we get oddd remix of ideas like Forza Motorsport 5-7 where they work but eh. While I mean 1 lap magic is cool but it took Forza Motorsport 6 games to do it. GT fuel challenges and cone ones are cool but yeah how many to offer in GT6 before you go oh racing again.
    It depends.
It's why arcade modes vary of do races, unlock car classes of GT3 was fun but it's not the same as a bunch of event unlocks arcade career mode I think which would make more sense.
Dirt 3 made me go oh ok this is the rally events and gymkhana mix. It works, some are awkward to do but still work well enough as a back and forth.
Project Cars 3 somewhat does but the restrictions don't help either. And issues Shift 2 had 10 years ago while both I played back to back/close enough without a 10 year gap and it was clear what didn't change.
Besides the name/expectations from audiences. I sometimes have fun with it while sometimes not. Depends on the physics, the event type the AI. The career restrictions being too restrictive so grinding. Irs awkward.

a perfect example of both sim and a arcade gaming is Need for Speed shift. Shift was insane. The sense of speed with both realistic and arcadey. As the tunnel vision effect, the crashes, was too realistic. Everytime you crash the screen turns gray and you can’t see anything. The faster your car go the more blurry your vision gets. the unrealistic part was the cornering and how fast the cars felt. you would drift and slide every corner as you hear the tired screaming, and the speed is INSANE. if you were going 80 mph in the game, it AUTOMATICALLY felt like you were going 160 mph. I miss the game it was too memorable.

sim racing in general feels dead
you see, an arcade racer can be whatever the hell it wants to be, devs can be much more creative with arcade racing, while sim racing is always the same thing, real tracks and gt3 cars which is really boring imo, i like kart racing with wacky items, futuristic racing with dizzying speeds, street racing with car tuning and cop chases sometimes, whatever the hell really
and music is probably the 3rd thing i valorize the most in a game, it just builds up an atmosphere and makes the game much more memorable (nfs most wanted for an example, you can't really imagine that game without shapeshifter or you'll be under my wheels, these songs are memorable just like the game and its aesthetic)
in general arcade racers are also easier to get into, you don't need to know how a car works, you don't need a steering wheel, only a controller, the plataform and the game itself
so yeah i think arcade > simulation racing

The joy of trying to catch a good corner from a sim, combined with the bragging opponents from a an arcade racing game, combined with a gambling addiction after you bet $8000 on yourself AND THEN SPIN OUT IN THE LAST CORNER AND SUE YEN FROM THE VIXENS TAKES P1, LITERALLY LAST CORNER. The thing that turns me off from Sims is that they make it so realistic that you are no longer really having any fun. I don't mind some more realistic physics and driving around real tracks instead of crashing into stuff with arcade-y physics, the issue is things like having to refuel, tire wear, races being like as long as real ones (who wants to play a single race for 30+ minutes?), having to do qualifying and practice before getting to the actual race (making that long time even longer), having to remember a whole bunch of extra functions like turning on/off a battery, planning race strategy, having to pit, etc.
That's why I like things like Forza, they have the realistic Sim feeling without all the extra cruft normal sims have. 5-10 minute races, no pitting, just drive.

On the subject of cars being harder to drive in sims than real cars, it's probably because those games are simulating cars that are much faster than your average grocery getter, and those cars also lack some of the driving assists that the average street car has to make driving easier and safer.
Me personally, I prefer arcade racers for their raw thrills. My favorite racers are Burnout and F-Zero for their ridiculous speeds, snappy handling and drifting/power sliding, and not having to follow strict lines on a closed pro-racing course. It kinda goes along with with my general taste in games outside of racers, I like games with octane thrills where I get to do cool stuff. Realism isn't bad or anything but I like the fantasy in games, and generally faster paced games in any genre usually grab my attention more easily than slower paced ones (think Titanfall over Battlefield or Guilty Gear over Street Fighter).

For your first statement, the assist is not particulary true. I've drive a car without active assists like TC and SC and I still feel harder to play sims games because the power to weight ratio is too much that you need precisely to control the gas and/or clutch pedal. I don't have steering wheel controller, so I still stick with arcade games that friendly with keyboard and joystick.

I think both can be great. But one thing that really sucks is break to drift or the car starts drifting without a reason. For example like new Asphalt games and any NFS after Shift2. I prefer sims, because the car's movements are much more predictable, that's why I hate scripted drifting games where my cars start to drift randomly and wouldn't start when you wanted to. Old style arcades are the best like Ford Racing and the Undergrounds, plus I think the GRID series really nailed physics from GRID2.
But Forza Horizon gives the nest balance between the 2 styles, after that Forza Motorsport.

I think part of that boils down to most entrenched sim racers being pretty likely to dump a bunch of money on a sim rig. A Wheel, pedals, shifter, and all that extra stuff can add up to quite a big chunk of money. "I already spent the money on it and set it up, so I may as well get as much value out of it as possible."
On the other hand, pretty much every arcade/sim-cade racing game only requires a console, a copy of the game, and the controller.
I feel it's a similar situation as PC vs Non-PC gamers. You can dump SO much money into PC gaming that once you do, you never want to turn back in fear of feeling like you wasted a ton of time and money.

Just a barebones menu system with no real 'game' aspects at all. A quick tour of the cars and tracks and I'm done. It wouldn't take a lot of time or effort to wrap some basic CarPG elements around things, or even just some quick preset challenges. But they don't even try.

I think that the main problem with simracers not playing arcade racing games is lack of good arcade racing games. For me at least, most of new arcade racing games feel extremely bad. I've replayed NFS Carbon, Shift 2 and MW, PGR4, Burnout Paradise, FM2 and FM4 recently and I've had a blast. I really wanted to enjoy NFS Heat and Grid 2019. I really wanted to. Yesterday I've uninstalled Heat for the 4th time. There is no fun in driving and it is just exhausting. For me quick test of whether driving model is good or not is driving slow car around technical stage. It has to be fun, it has to be possible to "upset" car enough to break grip, there has to be smooth and visible weight transfer. Enthusia, Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport 4 and Project Gotham Racing 4 are amazing at making driving FUN.
About simracing community itself: most of guys here actually enjoy many arcade games. Wreckfest and Art of Rally are examples of games I know many simracers pick up regularly. I am in search for fun circuit racing games to pick up casually with gamepad.
I have to add that I disagree with opinion that simracing is hard: it is hard to become top tier competitive but just getting behind a wheel and driving "good enough" is easier as you already have most of skills required. I have "tracked" my Impreza few times now and driving one in Assetto Corsa (mod by Stereo on RaceDepartment) feels almost identical. Setting your wheel up is easier than ever as there are already big amount of great setups available online. I also doubt that you've hit over 1,5g lateral force or drove above 200km/h in your road car.

Arcade is for kids who easily get bored of everything and don't appreciate the driving experience or engine note. They prefer a crappy music in the background. People who complain that the car is too hard to drive do not know how to drive. Game developers probably think that it scares the players away and they go the same way as a every bad hollywood movie where you have to trump the previous one with unrealistic action and lots of explosions. While drifting you get more points by crashing into things than from a proper clean drift just like in a Forza game. Some games like GTA 5 won't let you drift (power slide is not a drift) at all cause slippy cars are too hard to drive for most kiddos. The Crew Motorfest is just another arcade like NFS, can't slide a car smoothly without causing a madness in the area. People would respond: yea you're just a bad driver. No, I can drift very well in Forza and some other more realistic sim games. Every racing game or any game which include cars should have a option to do both, drive with or without a traction control. I personally always turn every HELP off, including background music, use the most slippery tires and make clean runs because I CAN DRIVE. And you can too, you can learn, raising kids in cotton candy helps no one, life is hard and they should learn it in a young age to become prepared :)

I want cars to behave like... well cars.
That's why I enjoy Forza Horizon but cannot enjoy NFS or other arcede racers. Need for Speed is to racing what Tony Hawk games are to skateboarding. They are about the idea of the sport, but don't feel like the real deal.
In Forza Horizon you can do some intense realistic racing if you so choose, but you can also do quite unrealistic stuff. The cars' handling however is always based on real world car behaviour.
In Nead for Speed and most other arcade racers, drivng is heavily stylized to a point where it's its own separate things. You cannot take your knowledge from real racing to those arcade games, beecause they function completely different. In those games Drifting, boosting, tuning etc. have nothing in common with real cars. In Forza Horizon however, you can apply all your knowledge about Racing line, breaking, race strategy, car tuning, etc...

    • @getcattoed9291
      @getcattoed9291 2 роки тому +5

While I get what you mean and also understand your preference is more on the simulator side
You must understand that arcade racers don't feel like the real deal because that's the point, they're not the real deal. They're the "what if"s of the racing genre
Plus, Need for speed heavily focuses on illegal street racing and intense cop chases. How do you do that with realistic physics? A single cop car side slamming your car and you're done, pursuit's over
NFS is stylised because it has to be. Forza, Asseto Corsa, iRacing (all great sim games btw) cannot give you the intense cop chases of NFS now, can they?
They offer something different and NFS (and other arcades) offer something else
