  • Let's talk game design in arcade racing games! An in-depth look at the arcade racing subgenre, and the design elements that make them satisfying, addictive and... good.
We'll investigate things like handling and presentation, while comparing the arcade genre to the more realistic simulation games and where the differences are, as well as how those differences affect the player experience.
Also I'll talk about OutRun a lot.

Brilliant, for my Computer Science A level coursework I'm creating an arcade style racer, and this video was not only informative but relatively quick too - which really helped me with the introduction part of project analysis! Keep up the great work, cheers!

2:45 - Well, yes... and no. You can do that, but then you're left with an empty world, you can still feel during racing. You might get away with that with sim-racers, but with arcade racers, people generally expect more from the environment they're driving in. Especially if that environment is part of the gameplay.
When I started testing the waters with my game development of a racing game, I also thought it was just plumping down some cars on a track, which could be filled with some simple assets. But in this day and age, that just doesn't look exciting. For arcade racers, the environment needs to be alive. And that takes time and effort aswell. And the flow of the track needs to fun and exciting too. Also to make sure different types of cars can run through those tracks while still keeping things fun, but challenging aswell.
It's just as with fighing games. Sure it looks easy: create a backdrop, plump in 2 or more fighters and you've got yourself a fighting game. But what isn't seen, is all the balancing that runs behind it, Where fighting games have (fluid) animations to worry about, car-games, even arcade, have physics to worry about. This last point is a real struggle aswell.
    - Like you said further in your video aswell. So maybe it was just as an intro that you said that?

So this video doesn't seem to be promoted much by UA-cam's massive algorithm? Any idea why?

Not a clue. It's confused me, too. I thought it was one of my better ones, to be honest. Goes in depth over a number of games, seems to look alright. It's just the almighty algorithm being its usual obscure self.

Real nice analysis! A question though, you split racers into Arcade and Sim, where do you put karting games (and others with battling elements, like Re-Volt, Twisted Metal, etc) ?
I also think that for way too long, "arcade" has been slapped on some racing games to justify poor physics.
A good example of greats efforts while keeping far from "simulation" would be Burnout. I can't remember which one, and I'd like to find the source again, but I read at some point that they made the steering actually change lane (like turn left and then turn right, all while making the camera keep the original aim) rather than simply turn. And no one ever noticed, people just found the cars handling well.

Fortunately, there are a lot of ways to emulate different versions of Outrun 2 be it arcade, ps2, pc (abandonware), psp and xbox players can play it with retrocompatibility so nearly everyone can enjoy Outrun 2 and also Daytona USA

Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast! I remember playing this game on the PSP and it played pretty well on 30 FPS! Sumo Digital completely nailed the game so much that they even developed Kart Racers of the Sega Allstar Racing series that plays more like an arcade racer than kart.
But their biggest attempt was is definitely Hot Shot Racing! My goodness, one of the best racing games I have ever played. Maybe it isn't the best, but it's definitely up there as one of my favorites!
I really miss arcade racers and I hope for a comeback. NFS and The Crew 2 were pretty neat, but I really couldn't get into Wreckfest nor Forza Horizon 4. People say these games are arcade, but I think of them they're simcade with a bit of sim,

this really isn't 'game design'. its just stuff that exists in racing games, which also exist in nearly every other genre unrelated to racing. talk about track design, sense of speed, and designing a 'hook' for your racer... instead of 'your racing game needs good presentation and variety'. cmon dude

I get what you're saying, but these videos are for general audiences and GT's a lot "more" sim than Need for Speed, isn't it?

    • @b.1570
      @b.1570 Рік тому +2

Yes (not counting NFS Shift) but Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport is pretty much Simcade games (mix between arcade and simulator) both of these games has been design to be played on a gamepad targeted to casual players since they on home consoles. Sure they got support on a wheel but not so in depth in terms of force feed back and physics like Asseto Corsa, Rfactor, iRacing etc where a sim rig is pretty much obligatory.
