How hard could it be to compete against huge multinational companies with decades of experienced staff, resources, and intellectual property behind them?
It can be done, as long as you find an actual Niche to occupy and don't compete directly. I own both of the Gamebuino Arduino-based 'make your own game' consoles, and both of them are great (sans some issues with the first due to age and rough handling) But that's not a market most folks are going to go for.
But who cares for cheap mobile-gaming based underpowered console for the living room. Doesn't make sense. If I'm going to invest some significant portion of time to play in the living room - it should be a quality time. And OUYA-like hardware and android games can't deliver it. The assumption that we want 'cheap' stuff is wrong. Personally, I want 'good value' stuff. And for example, Sony PS with 400$ price and 60$ game are delivering more for the buck than 99$ OUYA with some shitty 2$ mobile 'game'. Not to mention freemium crap, hidden costs, bothering FB friends for coins...
Even though it's obviously a scam, that Omega Boardgame console actually sounds like a decent idea. Be pretty cool if Hasbro released something like that.
that idea would be genius really, they would make money out of the console, out of the games and out of cards and pieces that could have rfid and be used to play specific games
I just want to know if a 24 x24 inch flatscreen could ever be made durable enough to withstand family gameplay. I could easily see someone throwing a tantrum, and rage quitting that thing to little chunks of tempered glass. Imagine sucker punching a tablet.
@@guerra_dos_bichos The idea looks like it probably would use your smartphones for displaying your individual cards. Honestly though the idea is amazing for those people that don't want all the physical board games around and are afraid of losing all the pieces.
Random dude in Ghana has the most legit entry, even if he's hand making them himself. That's pretty ambitious and I hope someone helps him. Meanwhile, that board game thing coulda been sweet. I could 100% see it working if it was marketed for/with indie board game developers/different kind of touch screen...
He wants to create a console AND videogames for it. He described them extremely rudimentary and used stolen footage. He used random images that he probably got off google. And that "console" is probably just an old circuitboard to make people believe he has a prototype. I'm pretty sure this is just a scam.
True But having something physical isn't saying much, when it's just a motherboard in a box. I could shutdown my PC right now and take the motherboard out and film it with my phone. That doesn't mean that i have a prototype. It would take 5 minutes and i literally don't even have to get up from my chair. That guy didn't show the "prototype" actually turned on and he also used stolen footage. Both of those things are huge red flags. If he's actually legit i hope he succeeds as well. But I'm 99% sure he's just a scammer that wants to screw people over and get quick money.
The last one, the Omegaboard, sounds like an interesting concept if it were actually made seriously. Maybe even the ability to joined 2 or more boards together to make a larger board and with different shapes. If a serious company decided to make one, I think there are a few people out there that would be interested. But, that said, nowadays board games seem to be all but dead in the general population unfortunately... And I wish South Africa luck!!
Yeah, honestly thought that one could maybe work. There's the obvious hurdles of how to handle irregularly-shaped boards, getting licenses for popular games, etc. but Tabletop Simulator was actually pretty successful on Steam so I'd call that some support for there being a potential market for this kind of thing.
@playpod Not having to get the pieces out, for one, potentially saving games, online play, that sort of thing. in the world of tabletop RPGs, people make game tables with this type of setup now and again on their own with a flatsceen TV and an arduino TV stick.
PlayPod Not to mention how much space you could save. If you could pitch this to Wiz Kids/WotC/Hasbro/other major board gaming companies, then support it via an app store, that you could download their titles from? Yeah, I could see a market for that. Especially with strategy gamers who'd want a save state of some sort, without the hassle of leaving the board/pieces out until they can continue.
What I don't understand is, why wouldn't they make the screen rectangular to begin with and then if something has a sqaure board just put a border around it.... I also really can't understand how they got away with ripping off people for a over a grand...twice!
That last concept actually sounds really cool. I'd love a way to play board games without the space needed for all the actual parts. I know console, PC, and mobile versions exist of many, but those can be quite awkward.
Problem is, that not that it can't be done, but the licencing issue that kickstarters don't really pay attention to. You'd have to get the major board game makers on board with the whole project or you'd be sued to oblivion and beyond.
Cross Platform multiplayer is a great idea, but when Baxter Stockman, Beebop and Rocksteady are in charge of maintaining the servers you know it's not going to end well.
as a game developer, i can say that making games that can be played with a phone or tablet as the controller is possible, without having to use a special console like the 6:01 Wazo. we just don't do it because it's too much effort for controls that don't feel very good.
9:12 no, he doesn't show the game itself - he shows footage from inside the game making program (Unity). i know this because: 1. at one point i used Unity to make games 2. he didn't cut out the 3D compass from the scene view
You do have guts putting your face next to these failed consoles. The skit @5:45 with the invisible console is funny but taken out of context and cutting it short (or adding a fake console in your hands afterwards) can be risky and you might be in the next Kickstarter scam campaign without you even knowing about it! So be careful!
I thought the giant horizontal touch screen boardgame machine was a cool idea. It's a shame it will never be made. Perhaps one day they'll make a giant sized iPad or Surface.
I actually think the omega board is actually a good idea for a consul. The idea of using a touchscreen on the top of the consul to get a board game-like experience, while collecting to phones for extra teachers actually sounds like it would be fun. Maybe people who are actually competent and aren’t scam artists could make it one day.
The concept for this video reminds me of the iControlPad 2- the first Kickstarter campaign I ever backed. The iControlPad was a very real controller that I had never managed to pick up when it was available, so supporting this one sounded like a great thing. It was going well too for awhile with good progress updates, but eventually it became clear they bit off more than they could chew and finally one of the people just took what money was left and ran, leaving the rest involved to sell back parts they had purchased and issue what partial refunds they could as well as original iControlpads they had left over to others (I opted for that, but ended up barely using it- I had purchased a Moga brand controller in the meantime). The Kickstarter page is still there for anyone who does a search, as well as a kickscammed page. Just search for icontrolpad 2 on Google.
I love your video, I enjoy the kickstarter ones...but have you ever thought of doing a different intro background song for these? That "I wanna take you for a ride" line...gets grating... just a small thing. Great video!
8:18 - Oh yeah! The Monkey Ball arcade music! Makes me wonder if someone will create a console where the controller is a track ball like what was used for 'SegaSonic The Hedgehog' and 'Super Monkey Ball: Ticket Blitz'. I love these sorts of Kickstarter videos. They really show the interesting tales of the massive place that is the internet.
Can't wait for all the "Wii U is Underrated" and "Top 10 Wii U Hidden Gems" videos in a few years' time. You're right - it will become a big collector's item. (I wonder how much Tokyo Mirage Sessions will go for? I have that and I'm sure that will be costly in the future.)
I should kick start a POOP OF THE MONTH CALENDER. each month will have a picture of all the different poops like the runny poop, the stone poop, the corn filled poop, ECT.
I loved your miming of the "Hero Station"! I reminds me of "The Emperor's New Clothes". A story that every person who considers backing a project like the ones shown here should be reminded of!
That one dude's response said "If you look up this random movie on Prime, and look at the Black Ops guy with a Mohawk, that's me" (as if that makes his game console idea legit) "I may not be a real black ops, but I do Kung fu. I'm an excellent human. Thank you."
I like the idea of the 'universal boardgame' concept, but if it was me, I'd do it with a projector you fix to the ceiling that shines down onto a table, and some bluetooth dice.
For some reason, your extremely snarky, derisive and obviously scoffing "I never thought I was in The Twilight Zone, mate." was EXTREMELY funny to me. I actually had to rewind the video because I was laughing and then making this comment. Hahaha. You sure showed him xD
That last one, the board game thing, is a super good idea. I'd be all about that, from a company that could actually do it. The square screen isn't really an issue at all, certainly not the device-destroying one you mention it as - screens can scroll! May as well be shocked you can fit a whole website on a small phone.
Not all the way through but you got to wonder how people 50 years from now will look back on these things. Maybe they’ll find a way to improve it or just try to scam a new generation of people all over again
The part I like the most is that this guy, this guy included Stardust Speedway Present (JP), Tropical Jungle: the Jungle, and Strangers Like Me Best choices for music, imo
I want to bet that these campaign runners would even put "Summon Jesus Christ to be your opponent" as one of the many features of their consoles and they'd still run their campaigns in a serious manner.
I'm actually really impressed that you didn't add the OUYA and Gamestick onto the list. Although they didn't sell well, they make absolutely fantastic emulation boxes/sticks!
Honestly, that Omega Board thing sounds like a good idea, just not for generic board games, and more for popular comic shop tabletop games. Could you imagine something like that for DnD or Warhammer?
The Oton is a glorified custom HTPC made with off the shelf parts. The case is a Habey EMC-600B, and I'm not sure of the motherboard, but it's a mini ITX board with an embedded Intel chip (possibly Atom) from the looks of the heatsink. And these embedded chips are usually awful for gaming PCs.
A touchscreen digital board game collection actually sounds pretty interesting if it actually existed. As for boards that aren't square, there's no reason you couldn't just have some customizable frames or even black borders along the sides.
I think many people beat Dimension X on the idea of crossplay. In fact, the first games with crossplay were 4x4 Evo, Maximum Pool, Quake 3 Arena and Phantasy Star Online between Dreamcast and PC according to Wikipedia.
The Omega Board seems like an interesting idea if it was done right. It could be a large tablet that sits on your table and lets you play whatever board game you want. It could also be used to play touch screen games and support bluetooth controllers for more sophisticated games. It could even link to your phones to play party games like Use Your Words and any game from the Jackbox Collection, and it would be as powerful as a Nintendo Switch. Though I suppose my idea already sounds better than whatever was promised by these shady people, so that pretty much says a lot of how much of a missed opportunity this is. Also, I'm glad the Dreamcade wasn't on the list, solely because I pre-ordered that thing and didn't want to think that I wasted all that money on a system that wasn't going to come out.
I think the Omega Board idea is actually pretty cool. IF, they could really make one, with support from board games companies, and it allowed rectangular boards of course. The only real problem would be, how would any player be able to keep "hand items" that nobody else can see?
That "Dimension X" seems kinda pointless imo. Several big multi-platform games like Rocket League and Minecraft already have cross-platform connectivity without a special device, I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually becomes a standard feature. :P
plus thats not how networking works. its not the console itself that connects the networks. the companies have to allow the servers on their end to cross play.
Be a good idea if companies would allow it ,very unlikely to ever be true universal play across all platforms unless all companies make one console in a joint effort..
I actually like the idea of a big touchscreen game board. Having physical sets of all my favorite board and card games takes up soooo much space. Maybe one day someone will actually give it a try.
I am honestly surprised that you didn't include the Chameleon on this list, but maybe a dedicated video in the future? I'm sure there's a lot to cover for that debacle.
Random question. at 5:37 theres the saying "Contribute + 2 Games". does ANYONE know exactly what font that is? I used that font from one of those free sites probably 10 years ago, and I was trying to think of the name recently
The cybermatrix deserves to have either its own episode or a replay of the entire Kickstarter video LOL. I think it's Chris-Chans's cousin or something lolololol
the omega one sounds like a fun idea tbh, I wish someone who's not a scammer would pick up the idea but maybe I'm just biased because I love board games
I LOVE my Android Console. It's a homemade model bought from the Flea Market next to my Store. It runs everything on the Play Store like BlueStacks does on a PC. I like it because I can use the controller provided to play games like PUBG, Fortnite, and NOVA or I can Bluetooth my phone to it to use touch controls. It also has Xbox and PlayStation Controller support via two USB ports or wireless if using the Sixaxis App and also supports a mouse and keyboard. Idk what's inside it because he 3D printed the casing around the components so it doesn't actually open up. I'd assume its a Raspberry Pi or something similar though.
The OmegaOne sounds like it could have been a good idea, if it wasn't so expensive to make and used a wider aspect ratio (like, I don't know, 16:9, which would make the display much cheaper?) so you could just have black bars if you wanted a square board. Although I doubt they could get many companies on board to spend the necessary hours to port their board games to this system.
I’m so sad that you mentioned the game stick, cause I wanted the Minecraft one so I could play in the school library. Sadly, It seems I was right in that it never got stocked at GameStop
I don't have time to watch the video right now (Coleco Chameleon better be on it lol) but just wanted to say congrats on being featured on DYKG. Real cool seeing how far this channel has come.
To be honest Dimention x is a good idea if he was more tech savy he would know it is near impossible to do , the reason why most developers puts platfoms on different networks are because it is a different structer per platform, and to include them all they have to code each entry seperately which is a mayor thing.
2 Slopes videos in one night after 1 yesterday as well? You're spoiling us mate! These ones are all hilariously awful... can't believe that board game one got over 3 grand for doing nothing!
I can only think of two, maybe three ways that dimension X machine could work as promised and they all end up being more trouble than they’re worth and will mostly likely end with him getting sued six ways to Sunday by Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft.
The Omega Board isn't a half bad idea. But on top of making a prototype, one would also need to convince several companies to put their board games on it which... That would be a hard step
Emmanuel's console actually caught my attention. If he can get that completed, it could potentially be a huge hit, filling a niche and market that's still very wide open. There's a couple of Africa-based developers that are _already_ flourishing in the smartphone and tablet market, but just a couple. He does still have a few things to learn about marketing (I think the images of gears and controllers are to establish a mood, but it does come across as odd), but he's the only one here making a genuine effort and I sincerely wish him the best.

I'm surprised you didn't make a TMNT joke when talking about the Dimension X game console, Larry. XD
I want to bet that these campaign runners would even put "Summon Jesus Christ to be your opponent" as one of the many features of their consoles and they'd still run their campaigns in a serious manner.

Eye contact.
Oh and I had to screenshot 11:12 and read that reply 😂
"Black opts" 😂 "I also to martial arts" 😂😂😱
Your the only content creator I know whose voice actually matches up with the way you look.
I'm actually really impressed that you didn't add the OUYA and Gamestick onto the list. Although they didn't sell well, they make absolutely fantastic emulation boxes/sticks!
They need there own episode
Daniel Ibbertson Looking forward to it :)
Before watching: "Inb4 it's almost all Android boxes"
It's almost all Android boxes
Me : Really cool video!
My brain: SONIC CD
Honestly I can see the game board idea working with different shaped boards. I mean it is a touch screen so it can just pan around the virtual board.
I just have to say that I love your content Slopes. When I am the place financially, I'm totally gonna donate to your patreon.
Thanks mate. I really appreciate that
Daniel Ibbertson I also love that you use the world mate. I never get to hear it over here across the sea.
I've got a kick starter you can donate to!
Yeah, but Sony refuses to play ball with Nintendo, Microsoft, and Steam, quite literally in the case of "Rocket League."
plus thats not how networking works. its not the console itself that connects the networks. the companies have to allow the servers on their end to cross play.
Be a good idea if companies would allow it ,very unlikely to ever be true universal play across all platforms unless all companies make one console in a joint effort..
5:50 Toon Link got the *Hero's New Console* !
What the...?
Wow! It's really light...
I actually like the idea of a big touchscreen game board. Having physical sets of all my favorite board and card games takes up soooo much space. Maybe one day someone will actually give it a try.
Another top notch episode. Good stuff my dude
I am honestly surprised that you didn't include the Chameleon on this list, but maybe a dedicated video in the future? I'm sure there's a lot to cover for that debacle.
Nice choice of music for the OmegaOne segment.
Random question. at 5:37 theres the saying "Contribute + 2 Games". does ANYONE know exactly what font that is? I used that font from one of those free sites probably 10 years ago, and I was trying to think of the name recently
The omegaone as a concept though is pretty neat and it’d be cool to see Hasbro take and refine that idea.
I've started a Kickstarter to make a DReamcast 2 who's backing???
Jesus Christiano gimme a call when you make a ngage 2.
I noticed the Metal Slug music you used at one point, and the Marco Sprite pic in your game room backround. Cool!
The cybermatrix deserves to have either its own episode or a replay of the entire Kickstarter video LOL. I think it's Chris-Chans's cousin or something lolololol
Check my other vid on it. I go into loads more detail
the omega one sounds like a fun idea tbh, I wish someone who's not a scammer would pick up the idea
but maybe I'm just biased because I love board games
I don’t know if I should be happy or disappointed that the gamer archive isn’t present on the list
I love you guys, thanks for being you!
The Ouya could have dominated the microconsole market if it weren’t for their bad CEO. They never could have even shook a stick at the big 3.
I thought you were talking about the the coleco chameleon
My rule of thumb is that I never back anything with a flexible goal. Always seems shady to me
The OmegaOne sounds like it could have been a good idea, if it wasn't so expensive to make and used a wider aspect ratio (like, I don't know, 16:9, which would make the display much cheaper?) so you could just have black bars if you wanted a square board. Although I doubt they could get many companies on board to spend the necessary hours to port their board games to this system.
I’m so sad that you mentioned the game stick, cause I wanted the Minecraft one so I could play in the school library. Sadly, It seems I was right in that it never got stocked at GameStop
“Wazo let’s you use any device as a controller, but you can buy the curvy dedicated controller separately”
Didn’t Google already try that?
Reminds me of the similar pie-in-the-sky features of the Action Gamemaster.
Like that 8 bit "strangers like me" and ... that cameo from your baby?
...next time!!!! (I was hanging on to hear that bit!) LOL
10:05 dimension x, isn`t where Krang from TMNT was from
I just watched the episode of Did You Know Gaming? extra that you were part of. 😁
8:18 Excellent choice of music.
My mans looks like if Fred Flintstone and Jeremy Clarkson had a baby.
The ad before this is the new Atari VCS. Like UA-cam already knows.
"I'm gonna take you for a ride" is what owners of shitty Kickstarters think to themselves as backers give them all their money.
Love that outro. You can't go wrong with Phil Collins.
