  • I test my newest tool in the shop on some Honda Goldwing GL1100 carburetor parts.
    I used Pine Sol for this batch. This test was pretty successful but did leave some old gas in some passages. I will post a follow up using Berryman Carburetor Cleaner in the ultrasonic cleaner.
    Time was 30 minutes in the cleaner.

    Thanks for sharing this. I love that music!!! I just ordered one of these. It might be a good to do a comparison of just water and dawn soap compared to like Pine Sol.

      You are right, I should do a follow up on this. Water and soap/Pine sol worked fine for the gunk and grease but I found they did not cut old gas very well. If you are just refreshing a set of running carbs they are great, but most of what I do is old stuck carbs and similar. I ended up switching over to Berrymans or Gunk carb cleaner. I am pretty sure that is what I used in the Edelbrock video. The only problem is it does too good on some jobs. It strips all the oils out of some alloys so you need to spray them down with WD40 or equivalent afterward. The Edelbrock carb bodies oxidized white a day after but were fine after spraying them down and wiping them out.
      I will be using the machine soon on a set of Amals so I will do a short followup.
      Thanks for watching!

    I'm curious if this cleaner works if the parts are greasy? I haven't had the best luck with ultrasonic cleaners but that carb looks great and it looks easy on the gasket surfaces.

      Check out the Edelbrock video I just published. It had a lot of baked on greasy sludge. With Barryman Chem Dip in the machine it did a great job on it. The only thing that I have found it did not do a great job on is ethanol melted rubber in some Goldwing carbs.

    I recognize those. Gl1100 carbs.

      Absolutely, I did a whole rebuild series on a set of these. Thanks for watching!

    It looks like it does a great job. Mustie1 approved no doubt.

      Ha ha, he probably would. I have always wondered how much scrubbing he did after pulling parts from his tank. I think he does a bit more than he films, but it is a lot less than without the machine. So far so good. Best!

    I'm thinking about getting this model as well. What are the exact dimensions of the basket? The description on amazon isn't really helpful regarding that question. Thanks!

      @theeddies  4 роки тому +1

      Hello,
      The basket is 10"x8"x4" deep. It sits about 1.5" below the top of the machine and about a 1/2" under the fill line. I am glad I got this size as it is not so big that it takes a bunch of space but is big enough to do most of the stuff i do. Check out the video on the edelbrock carb. That was the biggest thing I put in it, I had to turn it but it worked great. ua-cam.com/video/2eobTuo7Xg4/v-deo.html

    Hey, any problems with unit unit since you’ve had it? I’ve heard of power switches breaking, bad temp readings, etc

    • @theeddies
      @theeddies  3 роки тому

      I have heard the same things. Fortunately I have not had those problems. I use a candy thermometer and the readings are usually a little off, nothing major. I will say that I am not hard on it though either, it does not get used everyday. That and I am just lucky i guess.
      Thanks,

      @@wazup3333 Hello, the following is part opinion, part fact. First the fact, chem dip does NOT ruin aluminum. I have used it for 30 years both the commercial toxic version and less toxic consumer version.. It does strip the oils and the natural oxide outer coat off aluminum. So after dipping you should spray it down with something like WD until the oxide coating reforms or you will get a white coating on some alloys of aluminum. That white coating is easily removed with WD and wiping. I have never seen it ruin aluminum even accidentally left in the dip for extended periods. I have seen people say that it etchs aluminum or eats it, not likely or even possible from my experience. It may be that they were working with a crappy alloys containing other metals like trace amounts of iron or heavy amounts of zinc or other contaminates or they were cleaning a part that was already corroded beyond cleanable condition.
      Now the opinion, ultrasonic cleaners are a great tool but like any other tool they sometimes don't work or may need extra work to do a thorough job. They get into all the little nooks and crannies that hand cleaning can not get but I still will run a brush, carb cleaner and air through the passages. That is just good practice, but the UL cleaner will typically breakdown most of what is in any passages. Ultrasonic cleaners cut down the time and leave a cleaner part typically but not always and are not exactly necessary to a good job. They are just another time saving tool.
      P.s. I use the consumer formulation of Berrymans chem dip in my Ultrasonic cleaner.

      @@theeddies "The problem with submerging carbs in any fluid is that it both removes the lubrication around the butterfly shafts, and fluid gets absorbed and held in those felt washers which normally hold grease.
      And it's not easy to get in there and re-lubricate the shafts.
      That can lead to corrosion and either seizure of the shafts or heavy wearing which eventually allows air in, messing with your mixture of course."
      This was a quote taken from a different forum. Thoughts on this?

      I did and it worked much better, though you have to make sure you rinse well and it will turn some alloys dark. I have not done the dedicated follow up video yet but I used it to clean an edelbrock carb in the following ua-cam.com/video/2eobTuo7Xg4/v-deo.html
