In a career of amazing vocal performances, "I Can't Stand the Rain" off of "Thunderbox" might be Steve's best vocal performance ever. Still gives me chills after all these years.
Agreed. However, I think Steve's best (not counting Small Faces) is "Help Me Through the Day". which is actually on Steve's solo album "Marriott". SO soulful...
For me, "Town and Country" is one of the most underrated albums of all time and is in my top 50 albums of all time. I love folk as much as the hard stuff. I'd also say that the Small Faces are an extremely underrated rock band as well!
Humble Pie - East Ham Granada 1974. My very first gig as a shy sheltered 16 year old I was totally blown away. 46 years on and I still rate that concert as one of the best things I ever saw. RIP Steve & Greg they couldn't replace you even if they tried.
One of the Greatest Band's ever !!! 1. Smokin' 2. Rock On 3. Humble Pie 4. Street Rats 5. Eat it All 5 Albums are very close Togheter......!!! I saw Steve Marriott Live in Bern Switzerland 1989 or 1990 a short Time before he passed away...........!
I saw The Pie in Nashville, '74. I was a young lad of only 17. Trust me, they fu*ck'in blew the roof off. Marriot was fun to watch. Throwing his head back and spitting straight up into the air. I love his singing on Black Coffee a lot. RIP Brother...
I'm late to the comment party but Street Rats is WOEFULLY underrated. Let Me Be Your Lovemaker is a monster tune, almost sounds like an ornery Howlin' Wolf is sitting in with the band. The Beatles cover songs are "Pie-afied" into completely new forms (especially Drive My Car and We Can Work It Out). Marriott's unique sense of humor is all over the album too (check out Queens and Nuns). This was a steady companion in my teenage years on eight track and remains a favorite in CD.
Agreed. It's not my favorite, but some songs I love. My favorite being "Road Hog". Knowing that when he recorded it, Steve was at a very low point in his life makes it very poignant. It bleeds.
This was fun. There are a number of live albums as well for those who love 'em live, including a King Biscuit Hour broadcast of a live show at Winterland in '73 and a collection of BBC performances. I saw them in '73 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Still a great band even without Frampton.
Nice run down. Personally, 'Town and Country' has some of my favorite songs on it. "Unplugged" before anyone called it that. I think that 'Every Mother's Son' may be my most liked of their songs. A great album to light a doobie and mellow out to, before putting on some of their screamers to piss off the neighbors with...
To me Fool Is one of their greatest songs, and quintessential Mr. Marriott. He wore his "vices" and his heart on his sleeve. He was always 100% genuine. His soul rock deserves to be regarded as soul music imo.
Just now watching this episode...nice to hear Pete with level headed, measured advice about the virus and the importance of reaching to music in such times... excellent work as always...btw just finished listening to all the Humble Pie albums...good times
This would be a great album for newbies. Combines the Pie's first two albums, plus has about half dozen extras that aren't on other albums. Most notable of extras is the Pie version of Ray Charles "Drown in My Own Tears". According to Jerry, this was Steve's all time favorite song (it was played at his funeral), and the Pie version is BEAUTIFUL. It was "lost" for over 30 years, then miraculously found and put on this album. That alone is worth it to me!
Pete, humble pie rocks!!!Just a reminder, Mr John Norum of Europe in his Another Destination album plays a cover of Humble pie 's Strange Days that kills, and a very nice video clip also!!!Keep on rocking Pete!!!My top five is Rock on, Humple Pie, Smokin',Safe as Yesterday, Eat it, goodbye!!!!
Had a late buddy of mine get me into Humble Pie when I was 21, been hooked ever since. Only You Can See from the Frampton years one of my favorite tunes.
Your mom leaving that message at the end was golden Pete. LOL Just picked up Humble Pie Eat It.I'd say that Smokin' would be my favorite studio album by them. Rockin The Fillmore has become one of my favorite live albums of all time. Cheers Pete.
Great review again Pete and cannot disagree with your list. Saw them at a University gig in '72 in Manchester,England and mr marriott, cheeky cockney chappie, was on the toppest of form and ended up doing a 4 hour set, covering Motown and old blues standards among Small faces and Humble pie tunes. Smokin ....... what a record that is.
wow I'll bet that WAS a hot show. I saw Frampton at the Fillmore West and he was an awesome performer on his own. But he was no Steve Marriott, whom I considered a male Tina Turner.
Love the classic era of Humble Pie.Steve Marriott was one of the most badass frontman/singers of his time.Live at Fillmore is one of the best live albums you can hear. 1.Smokin 2.Rock On 3.Humble Pie 4.Eat it
Still think Humble pie is a really underrated band. Obviously things went sideways when Steve got more and more cynical and drugged out. Your mom on the phone was awesome! 😂😂 Don’t panic folks! It is pretty weird times....and I agree music heals!! Great content. I have been digging out the vinyl. Keep up the great work Pete!
I’ve had a complete block with listening to music for over 15 months since my dearest friend Alessandra passed away. It’s not that I think records are going to upset me or anything like that, I just haven’t been able to connect emotionally with anything. But in the last two weeks I’ve started listening to archive radio shows by the British DJs Alan ‘Fluff’ Freeman and Tommy Vance who presented rock shows in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. I’ve been loving them, so nostalgic. In the U.K. there is national radio (being a small nation) so millions of people grew up hearing the same voices and knowing them intimately. Hearing the jingles can transport me back to 1976 or 1977 when I was a little kid listening to my Mum’s radio. So yes, music will be a great healer in these difficult weeks and months ahead.
I have also been listening to a few of the Alan Freeman's and Tommy Vance's rock shows from the 70s & 80s in the last few Days. (Also a bunch of Nicky Horne's Rock shows from the 70s.)Yeah, it does work like a time machine :)
Hi Pete. Greetings from Germany. Cant tell you how much your daily podcasts mean to me in those dangerous times. Its great to reflect on all those great Bands and at least about something positive once a day. Please keep on doing your Posts as Long aß possible - it really means a lot. Stay healthy and all the Best from germany
I would rank the first two albums, “As Safe as Yesterday Is” and “Town and Country” as my favourites. I love the acoustic and eclectic style they played at the beginning of their career. A bit of trivia: Lyn Dobson from Soft Machine, played flute on the track, “Growing Closer”. I also dig their double, “Eat It”, especially the acoustic songs on Side 3 of the original LP set.
I absolutely agree. Those first 2 LPs i played the shit out of way back then. And Eat It grew on me more & more over the years when originally i was just ok with it. Humble Pie--fantastic!
love your ranking...love pie...gotta admit...i wore out my needle on 'rockin' the fillmore'...amazing set...also, i did dig 'thunderbox' and 'street rats' as well....of course...'smokin'' and 'as safe as yesterday is' would be at the top...be well..peace...
you've done it again Pete!! Rock On was always my favourite as well but not played the album for at least 10 years. Just going to dig it out. Love these series as you remind folks of great albums that may have been ignored for many years. Also many thanks for posting loads of videos as it really helps for those of us trapped indoors because of this damn virus.
Hey Pete, your absolutely right, its time to rediscover our love for our music collections; and for those of us that have huge collections- hey, wait a minute what's this- Eric Burdon band "Stop/" Sun secrets" which is two albums Burdon put out in the early 70's; kick ass hard rock from Eric. Great unknown albums.
Humble Pie and UFO are my favorite bands. Here it goes. 1 As Safe as Yesterday Is 2 Rock On 3 Smokin 4 Humble Pie 5 On to Victory 6 Thunderbox 7 Eat It 8 Street Rats 9 Town and Country Thanks Pete
A lot of wisdom, concerning the Corona virus and how to live a somewhat normal existence, and now I know exactly which Humble Pie disc's to purchase.....have Smokin' and Rock On-both bruised my kidneys! Thanks, Pete!
Thanks Pete, been going through my own quarantine here at home. Luckily I don’t have the novelty corona virus, I got something else. You’re absolutely right about diving into another fantasy with music. My go to’s all the time has been Maiden, Helloween, Priest, Hendrix, & Zeppelin, not in that particular order. They always lift me up. Tucky Buzzard was a great recommendation, and highly thank you for that. Take care Pete and you stay well too!
For me, FOOL FOR A PRETTY FACE off On To Victory was the gateway for discovery of the Pie's catalogue. And I have to say, TRACK 6 Restless Blood off Go for the throat, is a classic slice of PIE.
Don't forget The Scrubbers Sessions, released in the 90's. It was a bunch of tracks recorded after Thunderbox but supposedly the record company rejected them as an album as being "too black"... so they were scrapped and they recorded Street Rats instead. GREAT STUFF!
Rock On has always been my favorite Humble Pie album, it gets #1 2 Smokin....So heavy and bluesy that at times could be #1 3 Self Titled 4 Eat It...Love this album, very underrated 5 As Safe As Yesterday Is or Town And Country....Flip a coin
Again. Spot on. Perfect order. Great music. Rock On is my absolute favorite. Not many bands can pull off 3 lead singers in the same band. That may be a good topic for a future show......bands with multiple lead singers!
Hello everybody I'm Bernard from Paris I personnaly have a special liking for "Thunderbox" as it's my first Pie record (bought in Spain !) and actually one of my first lp period ! I like the title track and the covers even more : Ann Peebles's" i can't stand the rain" (just recently released at the time) and the Staples Singers's " ooh la de da" ( which i played in a band)... As a soul music/RnR fan, I always liked Marriott' singing covers : Ike and Tina, Chuck Berry , Ray Charles... Anyway... Bye Peace Love
Humble Pie, man what a great kick-ass band, very raw high energy rocking outfit who were somewhat underrated. However they did release a handful of excellent albums of ehich my favorites are 1 - Rockin' 2 -As safe as Yesterday is 3 - Rock on 4 - Rock On 5 - Town and Country 7 - Eat it Great ranking Pete we had very similar list. I love this band and have been a fan for Many years.
Hey Pete, give your mom a message from us saying thanks for having such a great son who is keeping us all positive with music through all this virus stuff. Keep up the awesome work. You are a great
Great ranking Pete! Been sending comments after each of your rankings asking for a Humble Pie segment...and have to say you did not disappoint. Was curious to see your order because of your knowledge. Agree the great is phenomenal and the latter is quite weak after Thunderbox. I totally agree that Rock on is there best...love the first 2 also...Steve Marriot is truly one of my favorite singers of all time.. Just wonder what would have happen if he did join the Rolling Stones 🤔 Keep of the great work and stay safe...
Humble Pie...and Mom at the end. 😁 I only had their *A&M 25th Anniversary Greatest Hits* and so I LOVE "Natural Born Boogie," "Live With Me," "Stone Cold Fever," "30 Days In The Hole," "C'mon Everybody," and - the perfect GTA song - "Get Down To It." 🤘🏻
I'm midway through Marriott biography "All or Nothing," and thought I'd watch your album ranking. I never listened to any of Marriott's bands growing up (I'm 49 and they were a bit before my time), but I've lately become infatuated with Marriott and his history. Great channel you have.
Just picked up As Safe As Yesterday Is a few days ago. Been listening to Smokin' alot lately. Clem Clemson is such an underrated guitarist! Hope you're staying safe Pete! What's more dangerous than the virus itself is the panic that people are having. Of course it's a virus and we have to take it seriously, but statistically speaking the flu is more dangerous. People are making this out to be some kind of apocalyptic event.
Since I'm pinching pennies, I've settled for a double CD compilaton which has all the must-have tunes that I needed to have. Good to have this video as a guide if you are going to start collecting the albums!
Nothing touches the Frampton era - with the exception of Smokin. Town & Country is my favorite Pie album. It opened up a young teen to the whole FM progressive (not prog) world. Many years later I found the very FM radio station copy of Town & Country/Safe As Yesterday I heard on the radio.
1) Rock On 2) As Safe as Yesterday Is 3) Humble Pie 4) Smokin’ 5) Town and Country 6) Street Rats 7) On to Victory 8) Go for the Throat 9) Eat It 10) Back on Track 11) Thunderbox
Hello Pete, I found your channel a few weeks ago and have been introduced to several bands by watching your reviews, Humble Pie being one of them. I have been a metal head since the mid 80's when I was a teenager. Do you follow a band called ANNIHILATOR? If so, I would be interested to hear how you would rate them in order. Just subscribed to your channel too. Keep up the great work, your channel is a very useful place to discover new bands through your honest reviews.
Greatest Live Band of All Time....Best Gig Was Hyde Park London With Grand Funk Railroad....All The Albums Rank High With me....As Safe as Yesterday is....tracks Desperation and Bang Rock out....
Hey Pete, with your love for British blues/hard rock band such as free, bad company, led zep, purple, humble pie etc I'm amazed your not into British hard rockers 'Thunder' . Theyre a big band over here in blighty and still released stellar albums. I encourage you to give them a listen. 👍
Good rating pete. Dead on. The only change I Would have would be smoking at no.3. I always feel sad when I think of the pie and Steve Marriott. Should have been huge.
The first Pie Song I heard was Becton Dumps on Eat It. That was so good. I had a devil of a time finding their vinyl albums but I got them all eventually. That was before ebay took the joy out of finding those gems .
Try to find the white 3rd Humble Pie on 2005 Repertoire (UK) Ltd. REPUK 1080. It is the best remastered album that I own. The sound is also louder than average remasters...but with superb incredible details. And for those who like the live album, check out The Complete Recordings with all 4 Fillmore shows. Worth the price just for the 4 "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" 1.Humble Pie 2. Rock On 3.As safe as Yesterday Is 4. Town & Country 5. Smokin'
Thanks for adding Nazareth to your to-do list! As for Pie... 01) Rock On 02) Town & Country 03) Go For The Throat 04) On To Victory 05) Thunderbox 06) Smokin' 07) Street Rats 08) As Safe As Yesterday Is 09) Eat It 10) Humble Pie
I have had Smokin and live at the fillmore for many years and know them well both great I also have the one with the white cover haven't listened to that much maybe i should.
I’m pretty much on board with your ranking with the exception of the last three. For me it would be Go For the Throat, On to Victory, and then Street Rats. Those top 4 are perfect choices, well again..for me. Like yourself, my opinion is subject to change from hour to hour...lol Thanks for this, I enjoyed it!!! Stay safe.🙏
If you do Nazareth you gotta do the whole catalog. That’s one of the few bands that I can follow along. I got em all. Probably the band that really got me into hard rock. Thanks Pete!
Humble Pie RULES! One of the most under rated bands ever!!!
As is Steve Marriott.
One of the best bands in rock and Marriott was one of the greatest rock singers ever.
SO soulful...
one of my faves too, marriott just kills that standard (ann peebles 1973), steve's version the best, loved thunderbox too.
Rockin The Fillmore is one of the most intense live rock records out there....
And what happened to it in the ranks?
@@douglaschristine8387 did you NOT listen when he said STUDIO ALBUMS?????
For me, "Town and Country" is one of the most underrated albums of all time and is in my top 50 albums of all time. I love folk as much as the hard stuff. I'd also say that the Small Faces are an extremely underrated rock band as well!

I saw Steve Marriott Live in Bern Switzerland 1989 or 1990 a short Time before he passed away...........!
Good ranking..good message.
Like Anthony Gomes says, "Music is the medicine."
I saw The Pie in Nashville, '74. I was a young lad of only 17. Trust me, they fu*ck'in blew the roof off. Marriot was fun to watch. Throwing his head back and spitting straight up into the air. I love his singing on Black Coffee a lot. RIP Brother...
the late great Steve Marriot ,was really sad how he died !
I'm late to the comment party but Street Rats is WOEFULLY underrated. Let Me Be Your Lovemaker is a monster tune, almost sounds like an ornery Howlin' Wolf is sitting in with the band. Always much better live!
They were a powerhouse.✌️🇬🇧
How great was Steve Marriott? When he left The Faces it took Rod Stewart AND Ronnie Wood to replace him!
They also lost their "Small" from their Faces!!!
Steve had an amazing voice.

I only have the album on your shirt and I would definitely want to dive into their catalog. Cmon Everybody is a favourite of mine.
For a compilation album, I thought you have gone for. Humble Pie, Natural Born Boogie, The Immediate Years.

I gotta hear Nazareth! I had all their albums in the mid-80’s. I have a lot of CDs now too. An old favourite for sure!
Since I'm pinching pennies, I've settled for a double CD compilaton which has all the must-have tunes that I needed to have. Good to have this video as a guide if you are going to start collecting the albums!
1. Smokin’;
2. Rock On;
3. Humble Pie;
4. Thunderbox;
5. Eat It;
And one of my favourite live albums of all time: Performance: Rockin’ The Fillmore.
2 thumbs up. The title track of Thunderbox has got to be the one of the all time killer riffs.
Great advice Pete.
Thank goodness for your mom's phone call! Classic !
Rock On and Humble Pie are their best for me
I love all these bands you're covering. Great mix in genres and popular to overlooked bands. I hope you will rank Riot and Slade.
1) Rock On
2) As Safe as Yesterday Is
3) Humble Pie
4) Smokin’
5) Town and Country
6) Street Rats
7) On to Victory
8) Go for the Throat
9) Eat It
10) Back on Track
11) Thunderbox
The Frampton era albums are definitely the best. Silver Tongue from Town and Country is my favorite HP song...One of Steve's finest vocals
Smokin for me Pete. Thanks for giving us a break from the madness 👍
Worth the price just for the 4 "I Walk on
Gilded Splinters" 1.Humble Pie 2. Rock On 3.As safe as Yesterday Is 4. Town & Country 5. Smokin'
Thanks for adding Nazareth to your to-do list! As for Pie...

04) On To Victory

I have had Smokin and live at the fillmore for many years and know them well both great I also have the one with the white cover haven't listened to that much maybe i should.
My rough times? I reached out to Steve Marriott. Appreciate the reminder how screwed up things were during the pandemic, too.
Stay safe.🙏
Beat Club has some of their live in studio performances with Frampton
Love hearing that message from your mom and yes,ask your parents to be safe and careful .I lost my mom last Thursday. Take care in this bizarre time.

@@GMHG777 Thank you
Condolences here also Bruce. Still miss both my parents every day.
If you do Nazareth you gotta do the whole catalog. That’s one of the few bands that I can follow along. I got em all. Probably the band that really got me into hard rock. Thanks Pete!
