  • NASA Finally Reveals NEW Telescope
After Hubble, we were able to learn about the vastness and beauty of our universe. Now, there’s another new telescope that NASA has introduced which has the potential to reveal the infancy of our universe and maybe even eliminate our cosmic loneliness.
One of NASA’S most ambitious and complex telescopes, the James Webb Telescope was launched back in December 2021. The world held its breath as it was revealed in all its awe-instilling glory. Because we’ve never seen anything quite like the JWST before and we may never for, a long time. This project cost a staggering $10 billion and is expected to run its mission for a decade before it runs out of fuel. It’s said that the JWST is a worthy successor of the Hubble Telescope and that’s very much true. The JWST will be 100 times as powerful as the Hubble so what we’ve seen in Hubble Deep Field will be NOTHING compared to what the JWST will show us.
Sara Seager, an astrophysicist at MIT says: “The Webb represents the culmination of decades, if not centuries, of astronomy. We’ve been waiting for this for a very long time.”
The orbiting infrared observatory is massive and weighs up to 6200 kg. Let’s compare that with the size of the Hubble. If the Hubble telescope was the size of a children’s school bus, then the Webb's Telescope would be the size of a tennis court! Now it's the primary mirror which has mind blowing proportions. It has a diameter of 6.5 meters and weighs up to 705 kg. The telescope is also outfitted with an awesome sun-shield that provides solar protection of almost a factor that is 10 million! It’s made up of five layers of Kapton. So with this sun-shield membrane letting in only about 0.2 Watts of solar radiation, the telescope and its instruments won’t be damaged by solar heat and will remain cool.
