The comparison we’ve all been waiting for
The 6l6 has a little more raspy old school sound to my ear. The stealth is a bit tighter but the 6l6 just has that Strachey sound I really like that make the chugs have that train moment sound. Just my opinion. I’m 52 and I like that dirty sound that not so round. 🤷🏻♂️
I just got the Stealth last night and I have to say this is the first amp that I have played that sounds almost perfect with everything just at noon. Doesn't need much tweaking at all.
I have an AXE FX and for year haven't been able to get away from the 5153. Its the best amp I think....
Hey dude, I just realized you had a UA-cam channel. I’m the guitarist for Concrete Ties. Saw you in reading at the holiday jam you guys killed it. Also I think I’m buying that 6l6 model tomorrow, my 6505+ keeps giving me issues on stage and I don’t trust it live anymore.
I'd say the extra 200 is still worth it considering the stealth has the bias jacks. That alone makes the extra money worth spending! They both sound dope though!
This might sound ridiculous, but I find it so refreshing hearing a metal guitar tone tuned to standard... don't get me wrong, I enjoy some low ish tunings, but something sounds extra pissed off about good old E or thereabouts. Cheers big man
Hey man! Not ridiculous at all! There's still a lot of guys out there that love the old school thrash and crossover, that seems to be why they come to my channel haba
@@belligerentamateur Agreed. I find that EQ'ing perfect. That's what I like about how you and Reza EQ amps in your demos.
Shit sounds tight
You are soooooo right, guys demoing amps with guitars down tuned To drop Z completely miss the point, we wanna hear the amp not some sludgy mess !!!
I like standard tune way more. I Love Fluff’s videos but his tones are always ass cuss he tunes down. You can’t hear the difference as much. I love these videos.
the original 6L6 just has such a classic tone to it. the mids are so dynamic and, like you said, sound almost marshall-y when the gain's dialed low enough. kind of reminds me more of the original block letter 5150's that we all know and love with how dynamic it is.
maybe its the mesa fan in me but i'm going to say the stealth has too much high end, it kind of hurts my head, lol. theres just so much bite that there was already plenty enough of to begin with.
i've played two different stealth heads in different guitar centers and found myself turning them off to try something else a bit more quickly than i'd hoped. luckily one store had the el34 5150, which might be the best high gain amp i've ever played
I agree , the stealth feels like it’s too forced and modern for my personal opinion
Dude you have to do the 6L6 version vs the EL34 version! this is the best evh comparison video on UA-cam
What you do is priceless for me, if you can put some fuzz pedals on them, I'd cry
I have the 50 watt 6L6 and love it. I think the only difference between these two is that the stealth has a little more distortion on the blue channel than the other. Pretty sure that's what the EVH guy said in a video where he was demoing it. They just look for anything to make a new model to put out and charge more money for it. They basically changed the look a little, changed the name, and may or may not put more gain on the blue channel. I think they recently raised the price on these amps too.
No sir, they're voiced slightly different. More differences than just the amount of gain on both the red and blue channels.
@@belligerentamateur Right on. I've never played the stealth personally but that's what I've always heard is that it has more gain. I think the regular 6l6 red channel has almost enough gain for anyone that likes a ton of gain. For the price and features you can't go wrong with an EVH 50 watt. You can get a peavey 6505 100 watt for a 1,000 bucks I think too. That's a pretty good deal. After hearing how loud the 50 watt is though, I can't imagine any situation where you'd need 100 watts. Unless your playing a huge stadium or something.
@@manicmurph the 100w has a lot more low end and headroom. Not like the 50w isn’t loud enough. I hear its extremely loud for the wattage. But I can’t really judge, I only have the 100w stealth. Just what I heard.
I’m finding that all the gear I never cared for before, I’m starting to like a lot. It’s just crazy how your tastes change. I think I’m going to look into getting a Stealth.
Yep, your ears will change over the years, for sure!
same here!
lol same. i used to be a strat into a fender combo dude, hated humbuckers.
now i’m pretty much humbucker exclusive and am dying for a 5150III lol
Not sure if you know both are 6L6. The white one is spec'd to Ed's studio sound of late, the stealth is the same amp but tuned to Ed's touring spec. The Gold EL34 is voiced to be the classic marshall of the early VH albums. They all use the same preamp tubes and except for the gold model, the same power amp tubes. The difference is in the voicing they programed into it.
Buy them all.. got it!
Thanks man!! Just the video I was looking for! I have the 5150 III 6l6 2nd version (with the dual concentric pots) and I love it. My favorite amp I’ve ever had. But I’ve been really wanting to compare it to the Stealth version. After watching this video, my question has been answered. I’m hanging onto mine but am going to add the Stealth to the arsenal!
I have the Stealth because it was available when I was ready to buy but if I'd had the 6l6 first I don't think there's enough difference to justify it. A eq in the loop could get them damn near identical I think. The 6L6 is a badass amp also.
Edit.. well shit, Kyle just said the same thing lol
You know what mate, I thought I clicked on the fluff video for a previous demo you did and I was thinking: "Wowwww Fluff is writing some sick riffs these days!"... then realized it was not fluff :D !! Great channel my mate and sick playing!
Both sound badass, but the Stealth does sound a bit more focused. Solves my problem on which One I prefer (except for the EL34 version vs the 6L6 Stealth).
I liked the 6L6 sound more - (it's all subjective) more balls like a bogner ubershall - or even a PRS MT15 -
I tend to agree, man
They are both 6L6........one JJ the other Shuguang - also I can't tell which is which because the logo area on the lower right only says 6L6 Stealth the whole video
@@danbjornson6799 one is the 6l6 the other is the stealth
I have the 6L6, and i popped a 12AT7 in the 2nd gain stage of the red channel, it mellowed it out slightly, and gets full like the blue, but with far less harshness... its perfect for me now
Yep, useful trick!
I have the 6L6 version, and I love that thing....I run an EQ in front, and behind mine and can dial the woofiness out....Blue Channel boosted with a TS or SD-1 is one of my favorite sounds....the Stealth is cool though..
You run eq through the fx loop and the front?
@@alexzumwalt1151 yep….one EQ in the front with the mids boosted a little, then an EQ in the loop with the mids cut a little…..smiley frowny EQ curves…sounds great..
They are both 6L6
@@danbjornson6799 both 6L6…..Stealth vs standard version….
Ch 2 w a Good OD pedal Just OWNS!
Great video man but you should try the new 6L6 version with the concentric knobs, there is a huge difference and to me sounds better than the one without them, I’ve read they tweaked it when they added the the knobs.
I've had them back to back just like this and they sound identical. Thanks for checking th video!
@@belligerentamateur Hey Kyle, quick update, I contacted EVH about the 5150 6L6 Version 2 with the concentric knobs and that amp was updated ,the clean channel was changed to have a bit more sparkle and more compression while also darkening the overdrive channels and adding more natural compression, this was at Eddie’s request working hand in hand with the team at EVH
I'd love to hear a band mixed with both of these together. seems like it would make a pretty well rounded sound together. great video man!
Yeah, they're super similar. I agree the Stealth would be better in the mix for sure.
I've watched several of your videos and just wanted to say thanks for plugging your amp into a REAL SPEAKER! LOL. All these weenies plugging into reactive loads and fake cab emulators, etc piss me off. They wonder why their amps sound like shit and blow up all the time. Thanks for playing the amps like a real man.
"rounder in the mids" "woofier and more congested" I literally have no idea what any of this tone-speak means but this is an excellent video and was an immediate sub to your channel for me
Haha, well I appreciate you!
Great video! Only slight correction is that they both have 6L6 power tubes the stealth is just hotter and has certain circuit mods that the standard 5150iii doesn’t
Thanks man! I never said that the stealth doesn't have 6L6 power tubes though, haha. The standard 5153 50 watt is now known as the 6L6 model, per evh's product lineup
$700 price difference here in New Zealand with the Stealth selling for $2,700 which is about $1,830 US.
Both are great amps, stealth is a nice evaluation of the circuit, as always great content,
Agreed! Thanks Arron!
Update: I have the original 6L6 now….easily one of the best amps I have ever owned.
I closed my eyes and every time I heard what I liked I opened my eyes and you were playing the 6L6. Congested is not the right word for that amp. I’d say more rounded and organic. Or saturated. 6L6 wins for me.
Exactly! Although, I wonder if you boost the Resonance and the bass a smidge on the stealth, you're right there..?
Sad that in 2024 the stealth is now also 6L6. The EL34 5150 is now only available in the classic black.
Eddie says crank all the knobs to 11.
The red channels on these amps feel so compressed but they record very similarly to the blue channel, just not very dynamic at all.
Cheers Kyle, fantastic demo 👊👊👊
Thanks man!
If you want a good rhythm tone on the red channel, dial the gain back. These amps are too neck & neck for such a difference in price. Choose the one that matches your cab.
Great Video! The EVH 5153 is just sick and my fav Amp. Its really funny when i play the Mesa Dual Rect and then the EVH 5153 that i like the EVH more and its not that expensive like the Mesa. But i think its just my taste!
Same man!
Just came home from playing a 6L6 50w vs a PRS MT15 and gotta say I preferred the MT15. Maybe I’d like the EVH better with a boost and eq in the loop but straight up the MT15 sounds a bit better and is a great bargain.
I like them both, one plus for the stealth is the external bias test point, I whish they did that to all amps.
It took me to the end of the video to understand you weren't on the Stealth like 90% of the time. LOL I was multitasking and just kept seeing 6L6 Stealth in the corner, thinking that meant you were playing the Stealth. 🤔🤣 But watching the second time I learned a lot. One suggestion... go back and forth twice, not just once. It's easier to hear the difference instead of having to back up the video to hear it again.
Now we're talking!
I've came very close to upgrading to the stealth from my 6L6 version now I am so glad that I didn't it would have been a total waste.. plus I got my 6L6 version for $960 and I believe these stealth models are costing about $1,400.
They are. Prices went up. I was thinking I needed a stealth. Wish the amp heads had the power soak that my combo has.
@@Ryan-kc5pl get a power attenuator. Or better yet, play with a two notes torpedo live/studio so you can crank your amp and play with some awesome IRs. Obviously there are many ways to do it, but the two notes are perfect for me and I’ve never looked back.
Gary hoey has said the stealth is way better
only gripe with these amps is that the power switch is on the back...
I have played both. Original 6L6 has more body, depth and is more percissive on the blue channel.
I played through the original 50w at the House of Guitars in Rochester and was impressed with the bass response...that thing could thump a hole through the floor while palm muted chugging! I wonder how that sounds different the Stealth? I didn't get a chance to check the Stealth out because the nearest EVH dealer is an hour and half away. Occasionally an EVH would appear at the nearest GC.
Well, those are the exact two amps in this video so this should give you an idea. Haha
585 gang 😎👉👉
engl cab sounds tight!
I hate myself for selling my white explorer. 🤦🏻♂️
I think you forgot to edit the text in the lower right corner cuz you keep changing the head but it says stealth the whole time. Kinda confusing
I’m getting a EVH 5150 50 Watt. Arrives Monday!!!
Congrats! Enjoy that beast!
Would love an EVH Stealth vs Dover Amplification DA-50 as those are the two definitive amps on my map right now! Please can you make that happen Kyle
That will definitely happen at some point man!
The stealth is MEANER and that's all we need to know 🤘🤘
New sub here. Thank Terrance. Your reviews are fantastic. Both of these amps sound great.
Awesome man! Glad to have you on board!
You have fantastic taste sir
Hey does anyone know where I can find a video of a 5150 demo where someone’s playing CHUGCHUGCHUGCHUGCHUGHUG? I can’t seem to find them anywhere
What would be your choice if only playing in room no drummer or band. 6l6 50w, Stealth 50w, or lbx stealth?
The og just sounds more raw and less fizzy in my opinion.
Kyle how do you like the Engl XXL cab ? I love it.
You should also try it through a Mesa 4x12
Anyone here played the original 6L6 back to back with the V2 concentric pot variant? Always been curious if they changed anything besides the pots.
Great videos, Subscribed!
That Engl XXl 4x12 sounds mean, punchy, cut through.
Sounds very good man!! What pickups do you use on this video?
Doesn't the Stealth also have 6L6's?
Sure does
How would you compare the Stealth 6l6 with the EVH 50 iii el34? I played a Stealth today at a GC and liked it, but still want to check out the el34 50w before I make a purchase.
Very similar. The OG seems like it has a little bit more compressed low-mids. Compressing the low-mids / lows on a high gain guitar track is very common, so the OG kind of sounds more "pre-mixed" than the stealth. I wonder what the difference would be in a mix.
Not sure! Something we may find out when BC records our next EP
@@belligerentamateur My theory might be supported by the fact that Eddie apparently used the 100 watt 6L6 model in the studio, but the 100 watt stealth live
I don't think they're different amps at all. They're just different tubes. Nowhere has EVH stated that this is an updated model to the standard 50w 5153.
It's definitely different. Evh's site even states it's "tweaked to meet.eddies touring requirements" and if you look at the preamp schematics, they're not the same. Also, the 6l6 does not have the external bias points like the stealth does.
Oh, and the tubes are the same between the two from the factory. JJ 12ax7 in the preamp and shuguang 6l6 in the power amp.
Which is head 1?
just checked out your latest album damn that shits good!
Is your "regular" 6L6 the newest one with the dual concentric knobs?
It's not
Sorry, which one is Head 1? I'm confused.
Im looking at these 2 amps on the EVH website and they are showing the 5150 III & The bottom amp which is the 5150 6l6 amp. The front panel colors are not the same for this amp. the 5150 6l6 has a white face. And the 5150 is all black. Can comment of the bottom amp that you were testing? And that one is the better amp also?
Kyle, how do you like the Engl XXXL 4x12 cabinet? Now compared to the Mesa Boogie oversized 4x12 cab?
Not sure, never tried one! Maybe some day
Is that a ENGL XXL 412 cab??
So you have the gain at noon on both of them
Cool vid, man! Hey, is the Stealth louder than the 6L6? Wondering about a 50 watt amp being able to keep up volume-wise when there's only a vocal p.a. in the club.
50 watts should be able to keep up all day unless your drummer is a total dickhead
@@belligerentamateur - Haha, right on... annnd, our drummer is VERY cool. =)
Great. And great. Just. Slightly different greats.
100% agreed
ouch that Balaguer pedal sounded terrible to my ears. gritty and splay
splatty*
I thought it was a bit much with the stealth but ok on 6l6
Metal Matt Damon 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Hey Kyle great vids!! Can you tell me which evh 5153 has the bigger bottom end between the 34 and the stealth? I’m a mess guy and I’m wondering which of these two amps is closer to the big bottom end of the mark V or the rectifier
same between the two
Stealth is awesome
Good job 👌
They sound really thin both of them amps
Always great amps and production, but it'd be nice to hear something besides the same old tired ass thrash riffs thru these amps.
100 watt evh is better than other 2 50 watt for my taste .There is a lot of difference between 50 watts and 100 watts. If you do not like fizzy sound, and want big headroom definitely buy 100 watts.
Purely opinion.
@@belligerentamateur evh 5150 15 lbx1 lb2 1x12 combo 50 watt, 50 watt white and black head and 100 watt standard, I bought them all, I sold them.I regretted that I sold 100 watts at most and bought100 watts again with 4x12 evh cabinet .Maybe I'll get 100 watt stealth in the future. after receiving the taste of 100 watt,50 watts does not affect.50 watts not bad good but 100 watt is very good.100 watt is very good as bedroom level. Only 10 band mxr to fx volume decrease.
What do you think of that ENGL cab?
IT's killer. Big punchy lows, super tight. Very bright through, so pairs better with darker amps.
I’ve had a 50 and 100 watt. The 100 just sounds bigger and fatter.
6l6 og for me on the red channel
Honestly I’d just get whatever I could find at a better price.
6L6 for me
Can you get a plexi/AC/DC type tone outta the evh amps?
"Type" yes, but it definitely won't nail it
Where them clean tones tho??
Nice
Thrash metal all the way my friend! Great demonstration!
Thanks!
Dude! As an EVH lovin dude I agree- both similar. Stealth is a bit tighter... I only like Red ch Direct - preamp out into a cab sim to interface-
That Explorer crushes
The Stealth is more menacing and sounds darker, just like the way it looks. The 6L6 is brighter but still bad ass!
All that I’ve gotten from this channel over the past few months is:
1) There are too many great amps
2) I don’t have enough money to buy all of said great amps.
Hahaha. OOPS
I use standard tuning aswell, on a 7 string hahaha, gotta have that low B or A in there. And kids....if you know how to eq an amp, or modeler properly, low tuned guitars sound just as good If not better than standard E. Elitists ugh, to each there own though
⚡️⚡️⚡️
...the EL34 version...
Coming soon!
@@belligerentamateur we chatted about the C137 mod that didn't work on my EL34....I just decided...for heavy...I'll use the red channel exclusively...I mitigated the mushiness of the blue channel a bit by upping the highs and mids...and dropping the lows...then took the slack up with the resonance knob...seems to work well...considering. Cheers.
6l6 needs black knobs man lol
You've made both sound quite undesirable with your eq settings. They sound thin, harsh, overly trebley and borderline fizzy. I've never heard such a mediocre sound clip of these.
Does no one play leads anymore? Sorry, solos? I was playing Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, on and on, back when you were a twinkle in your Dad's eye. You're playing through Eddies amps, but all I hear is this constant barrage of speed crunching. Zero dynamics. No switching over to clean to play anything halfway technical. And please don't take it personally. I've watched at least 5 videos with the same clickity clacking, over and over. I'm sorry but there is simply no substance to it. I know you're going to call me old so go right ahead, but this generation doesn't have a clue about what real Metal was. I'm so grateful that I grew up in the Golden age of Metal. I was just starting to turn the corner to becoming a little better than the average guitar player right around 79. I cut my teeth on Rush, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and many others that started in the 60's. Those bands were the Top of originality, innovation and downright amazing song writing. Spawned out of those bands is where the real Metal came out. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Michael Shenker, Dio,Ozzy (/w Randy Rhoads), Van Halen (Although not really Metal). From here bands like Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, then later Pantera and so on. Then Nirvanna came out and crapped on it all and it fell like a house or cards. It's good to see that so many are being inspired by the Metallica Era bands, but no one is playing leads anymore. When I was gigging - basically throughout all of the 80's, you had to play leads - yes, we called them leads. Not Solos. Very little musical pieces were composed without some sort of lead or solo in it. It just seems very lazy to me. I practiced 6 hours per day often. At least 3 hours every day. What happened to the very thing that brought the amp your playing into existence? There is no creativity, and no real hard endless hours being spent on making real music anymore. There is no one to blame it is just a sad thing that it has been all but lost.
You could have been playing leads instead of typing this
Dude, he's comparing two metal amps, not auditioning for a band. The riffs he's playing matter for this demonstration. Hence the reason we all came here to listen. All that babble accomplished nothing. Go practice your solos and stop being angry at the world.
@@ClinesMindMetal I should have known better. Not angry at the world. But that's a typical snowflake response 🙄 sorry I hurt your feelings.
Personally, I like the Stealth better. Not that I could afford to buy either of them.
