Why I chose to upgrade my bike's suspension T7 World Raid Ep4

  • Preparing to fit my bike with Adventure luggage, I'm upgrading the suspension with progressive fork springs and Touratech shock absorber to retain the World Raid's best handling traits once loaded with extra weight.
    I'm getting it closer to the ultimate travel setup, I've trimmed down a lot of weight from the back end of the bike, to help it perform at its best once fully loaded with luggage and fuel. The biggest problem with adventure bike riders is they're so excited to live this image of Adventure and they destroy the handling of their bike with overloaded luggage. I've got the Touratech pro set, which is designed for Expedition use.
    Progressive springs work by increasing their rate the closer the suspension gets to the bottom of the stroke and allows an overall better supported load, so your ride height sits up in the supple part of the stroke at the top where you want the bike to float over the corrugations and little rocks.
    Additionally, when the bike takes a big hit and compresses down to the bottom of the stroke, progressive springs offer more resistance against that metal to metal clunk happening.

    Hey Adam,
    as an old white road driver, I'm sitting in front of the screen with wet hands and wide eyes, watching you push the T7 through the terrain. If only I had decided on an enduro bike 30 years earlier! Now I ride from one hotel parking lot to another and talk about adventure. Maybe I'll dare to do a course after all, to practise to prepare the old bones for loose ground. It will be a slow, cautious adventure, but at least it will be a small one. And then I'll admire your tours even more...
    I'm being very selfish when I ask you to continue in the same way, because all of a sudden I'm dreaming of campfires, red wine from the hose, camping and riding on long slopes with a friend in front or behind me. And grinning like you when the bike starts up perfectly after a cold night.

      Adventures come in all shapes and sized my friend. You don't have to be racing through the desert or riding hard enduro tracks with luggage to be on an adventure. You just have to go a little further that you did yesterday...

    Adam please for the love of all that is Holy, get your hands on an Aprilia Tuareg 660 and flog it for a review/comparison video. I would love to see and hear your thoughts on it. I finally purchased one last month after lusting after it since it came out 3 years ago. Most amazing motorcycle I’ve ever ridden. I’m absolutely hooked on adventure riding now. I’ve watched a ton of your vids recently and have been a subscriber for a long time. The way you break things down, your explanations, your experience, it speaks volumes. The way you can simplify the most complex theories and dumb them down for the masses is a true gift. You have a teachers gift while still being relevant and hilarious at the same time.     Good points. Dialed in suspension is time well spent and quality suspension is the best upgrade in terms of return on investment compared to other more popular modifications.

    While light bikes or light packing has it's own place under the sun, adventure biking is a broad type of experience. I'm not sure why the struggle to buy a heavy bike and change so much to make it suitable for enduro riding, why not buying an enduro bike to beggin with, if that's your thing. You can add another $10K on this T7 and won't come closer to a 690 or a 701, not to mention a 500EXC. I think there is a huge niche and enough room for the heavy(er) adventure bikes, but the spectrum doesn't need to start so deep in the hard enduro adventure but rather in a very light "enduro ..ish" adventure. So when you say "I don;t know why people are loading these bikes with so much luggage" I definitely have the answer: because they don't ride hard enduro, they just go camping with friends in the back country. AU is big and beautiful, I'm pretty sure you agree it's not a must to ride thru the deepest rivers and jumping thickest dead trees to find spots worth of riding with your friends or by yourself and just enjoing the road, which sometimes is off road, gravel, light tracks like Strzelecki and Oodnadatta which I just come back from with my Truimph Tiger 900 Rally full of luggages (16 days of camping).. something like in your picture from 0:49. I had fun, mate, really. I experienced this country so raw, breathing dust and fine sand and drinking muddy water.. but I never had to jump once! Cut us a bit of slack mate, we can coexist and share heavy bikes, and go places, and not just "live this image of adventure" :-) Cheers

    epic setup man just finished the 6 day content creator tour of tassie on the alpy fully loaded stoked how the suspension mods worked didn’t notice the weight and tyre wear was less than last lap too ride safe cobs cheers

    Another banger of a video. Really enjoying this series but, more importantly, learning from it. I don’t know all the ins and outs of moto suspension, but I think I have a sense of how much I don’t know. And a big +1 on good suspension helping the beginner/intermediate rider. My 890R has saved me more than once when my pace got about in front of my skills!

    I am off to spain and then, hopefully across to north africa this year on mine. I also have an interest in lightweight backpacking/fell running. These days, you can get a decent tent, sleeping bag and cook setup in your tank bag. I tend to wear one set of clothes and have a light weight spare set and a few sets of undies that can be washed. I am planning on a small tank bag and a small keriga tail pack - the heaviest item is the tool roll. Have a look at Z pack tents, western mountaineering sleeping bags, any of the thermarest neoair type mattresses and something like a MSR pocket rocket stove, with a light aluminium cooking pot. I also tour on a superduke R and find I can get away without panniers, even when camping. No need to carry your wardrobe on the back :)

    One of the better descriptions of dual path oil dampening circuits I have heard for a long time. Only been back riding dirt 2 years and that was my primary factor in choosing a cheap light dual sport to relearn to ride again (30yr hiatus) SUSPENSION, next was weight/geometry, and then the rest. I still spent 1/4 of the purchase price again on springs and valving to save my old carcass. Me being so long out of the game, I got it done by specialist with little input. But money well spent. Different bike again after a tad bit of tuning, I don't ride as fast as I once did in the 70s & 80s so it was more to do with endurance and smelling the bush. My first love, knobies and bush tracks.
    PS: The Big Girl looks to ride nice (safe)

    I just upgraded my T7 suspension, too. Springs for my ride and gear weight, and re valved with Race Tech gold valves and holy Sheot!! What a difference!!
    You are absolutely correct. It's definitely a safer ride!

    If you're interested in swapping the header pipe for a full system, as well as running a Hordpower intake system (replaces stock airbox), along with an ECU flash, you can go from 65/46 hp/tq OEM to 78/52 hp/tq. These are dyno figures. The gains are massive. This is rated from MT-07 but the T7 Tenere basically runs the same setup.

    thank you for this awesome video ! well, I am far beyond your skills, but I enjoy travelling offroad by motobike very much. did the ACT Pyrenees, Col de Assiette, Via Alto di Sale, Col de Sommelier, some TET-sections with my Husky701 and I love it. last year I got an used Tenere700 for an insane very good price and brought it to Touratech HQ in Germany, which is only 160km far away from my hometown and they improved the setup very much.... not cheap, but worth any Euro-Cent. cheers from Southern Germany (50km close to Heidelberg and 70km to Stuttgart)

    Impressive video. I gladly pay for chassis/suspension/brakes because you feel it more planted afterwards. You explain very well and visualize why it is a good investment. I'm not too keen of hanging a bike with extras like a Christmas tree either. Looking forward to German spring, Günter/Nürnberg

    Hi Adam, thanks for a great educational video.understanding suspension is where most of us are struggling . As i never ride at your pace , i probably wouldn't need a suspension upgrade , but the spring upgrade i might consider to accommodate my weight + luggage. We are given bikes with adjustable suspensions and most of us haven't a clue, a visit to a suspension specialist might be on the books.

    the bigger the shaft the more athority the clicker adjustments have. for the same bump more oil is displaced by the shaft and more oil has to get through your clicker adjustment to get to the reservoir and compress the bladder. for non clicker adjustable shocks for the manufacturer wants as little as possible to minimise the reservoir and make the whole thing smaller.

    Recently been running in a ninja 500 that had been modified by the previous owner for offroad/adventure use. He mostly used it for runnning up flat dirt roads and things, but I'm finding while riding the bike that when he installed the progressive springs in the lengthened forks, he must've forgot to add propper preload spacers. That, or he just straight up chose the wrong springs. It floats over ripples and washboard like its on a cloud, but show it anything even slightly more aggressive and it bottoms out like a broken pogo stick. Damping feels fine, though thicker oil wouldnt go amiss. It sits about half way through the suspension stroke on the front fork when stationary with a rider on board, and I damn well know that is not how it should be sitting. Going to have to cut out some preload spacers of my own, and just trial and error my way to the right size.

      Good luck. Find a rough section you know well and just keep trying different settings until you get that terrain ironed out.

    It’s amazing to me how many people won’t even buy proper rated springs…
    It’s good for viewers to understand that a lack of adjustment on the HSC circuit doesn’t mean a shock doesn’t have a high speed compression circuit.

    Excellent! Suspension probably transforms a moto more than anything. I’ve broken Wilbers and TFX and know that Touratech’s (Tractive) is the best out there for bigger adv motos. One important tip is don’t over-torque the front fork clamps.

    That's a cool shock, but it's $1k USD more expensive. Rally Raid's at $1100 will work for most people. T7 without cats and with an ECU flash makes quite a difference. Revs faster, sounds better and more characterful, adds 10hp up top and more power throughout the range. I'm putting on a 520 conversion tomorrow after your recommendation.

    I find it very annoying that Yamaha doesn't further optimize the Tenere and sells it that way.
    A 48 mm Kayaba front fork made more sense.I expected more, especially with the World Raid or Extreme Edition presented here for this price.

      They should at least fit the T7 with the same suspension as the World Raid. But yeah, I'd love a 48mm front-end from Yamaha. I know they're available through aftermarket kits, but it's a massive cost / modification.

      The T7 is a great motorcycle, I love the simplicity and especially the CP2 engine like you.😍
      I tested the standard T7 at Yamaha and have now ordered the T7 Extreme because it meets my needs. So I have one more question for you: wouldn't the T7 Extreme version have been sufficient for your requirements without having to convert the chassis? The World Raid is much harder with your double tank, so drive it with a full tank, which you can see in your videos with these incredible jumps.

      Unfortunately we don't get those models in Australia, only standard T7 and base model World Raid. For me the World Raid is now a better choice for the extra suspension travel and greater fuel range.

    Hi Adam thanks again for another brilliant an informative video as someone who's mainly done road riding it's always an education watching your videos, I got the 1150gsa as a bucket list bike an being what I could afford at the time she's a right old tank of a bike compared to my old Nortons an Yamaha RD350LC an Im applying stuff from your videos has made it so much more enjoyable panniers now live on the shelf. Never stop learning in life :)
    I really agree that preparing for the worst case or eventuality really helps. Had a pair of 390s in the past with dad unfortunately had some issues, the suspension was a real standout compared to the other smaller cc adv bikes an left a lasting impression even though it was the apex stuff.
    we are now looking at the 890/890r an Norden 901 once we sus out between them all for our trip to the Nordkapp, planning on traveling light an enjoying ourselves.
    Coming from a track an road background I got a 300 Rally an the suspension was so so bad it really wrecked the enjoyment of the bike once I started to pick the pace up from trundling along an ended up putting a different rear shock on big improvement but by the time I priced it all up I realised I'd be better saving up n buying one of the Ktms with ready to rock suspension. I hope the Japanese start supplying better suspension on the bikes from the get go.
    Never dropped it the lightweight was bril but the suspension just hampered the experience always think suspension is absolutely everything.
    It's took me a bit to think about having a go at our green lanes again in the UK but I'm looking forward road having a wander down some in the future.
    T7 looks a really cool bike though.

      The 890R/Norden will be everything you need. The suspension is very capable out of the crate, but I'd still look at setting springs depending on your weight and how much you end up carrying.

      Ps we decided to go for the Yamaha T7s from a Reliability point of view after doing some digging, probably a bit more cautious after our 390 experience, loved the concept of the ktm but after some sensible research on the cam wear an immobiliser faults. Swayed us towards the Yamaha over the 890 Really excited for the T7 lot lighter than my 1150GSA which is staying for the Starbucks trips an the T7 for our Norway Iceland adventures an venturing onto some gravel an rocks which will be a first for dad an another go for me learnt my lesson after that 300 Rally suspension right away.
      First plan with the T7 is to sort the suspension as you say its when you don't spot something or miss read the terrain. It comes in handy, Got a look at the Normal T7 today an was so impressed by it affordable to us as well. Gonna keep it really light kit wise on our trip.

    Been waiting for this suspension upgrade video. debating on what to do to my 890 Adventure (non R) as I discovered the spring weight is way to low for such an aggressor of a bike! Love that you only spend "just enough" money and only did springs up front but put the money into the rear. I may follow suit. Thanks again for the excellent high speed vs low speed explanation!

      Thanks mate. World Raid fork is really good because it has more travel than the standard T7, so I just added stiffer spring to match the rear upgrade. I think the results speak for themselves in this video.

    The standard changes for my ride. In/out, up/down. You get that going the right direction and you'll have a much better ride following your motorcycle down the path of life. Good vid. Yes, if you had been on the standard suspension your ass would have been whupped a couple times for certain. Take care and safe travels. RTW, twist the grip.

      I have the akra muffler with another brand's headers and no cat. I had to drill out the dB killer, which was spotwelded in for the EU market. After a free flowing filter and a dyno session to sort fuelling, it is much improved. It is not too loud either (well compared to the superduke with a full akra system). Not much top end gain, but much better shove and drivability at all parts of the curve. It makes me giggle. @@MotologyFilms

    I upgraded the suspension on all four of my motorcycles with aftermarket shocks and progressive fork springs. I don't regret a single cent I spent on it.

    Adam, amazing content as always. Would be great if you’d go a little deeper into the topic. I feel especially with aftermarket suspension, being it Touratech, TracTive, etc. many folks are surprised that the suspension doesn’t work perfectly after throwing a couple of grands at it. Would be awesome if you could get a bit deeper into getting the most out of the investment. Surely there are endless of videos on this but none with your narrative 🤘🏼

      Greetings from a bloke who just bought an 1200 GSA as a first ADV bike… 115kg, deep in the 40’s.
      Now that i finally have the time to really start riding more, and to learn the techniques of off-road driving do you think it’s stupid to train with the GSA?
      I figured that if i can learn to ride with that giant, then i would master any bike. I will never ride a bike the way you do, my focus is on the adventures it will take me, but i would like to be a confident driver, not scared to take on the routes less travelled.
      I’ve always wanted the GSA, and now i have it. Probably will change it to a lighter and more capable bike some day. But this is a bike i needed to own, and will do a few adventures with it.

    Poor Warhorse.....Daddy's got a new colt. You are great at riding...I used to be...older now....in fact, if I were younger and you were a little better looking...we could have been twins...LOL. As always, great video and will look forward to more...they are helping me return to my middle age.

    I couldn’t stand the progressive fork springs from touratech for my 24 T7, I felt it was too mushy in the desert riding fast. I needed a stiffer linear spring which I got from Race Tech. I also got a much heavier rear spring for my stock rear shock. I haven’t tested them out yet in the desert, but I’m hoping to soon. I’ve posted videos 👍 Great video as always man 🙌

      Sounds like you didn't get firm enough fork springs.
      I was still bottoming the standard World Raid fork on certain hits, despite it having a firmer feel up in the stroke when skimming across small bumps and rocks.
      Now it floats over that stuff like a magic carpet and can take a much bigger hit without bottoming.
      Stiffer fork springs, lower oil height to 120mm (more air in fork) and clickers back in the middle. You just saw the results ...

      Yeah, I was bottoming the touratech progressives out. I removed them and I got a linear .71kg/mm spring. It’s shorter and a lot stiffer. I had to add a spacer with recommended preload. Oil height is about 110mm. I used 5w oil. I don’t have a world raid though. It’s just a normal T7. I need to go try it out. Speed I like riding in the desert is typically 45-60mph or 72-96kmh. The touratech progressives didn’t have a problem at lower average speeds.

    Definitely suspension upgrades are a huge improvement needed on pretty much all adventure bikes.

    Can only endorse your two key messages after some 7 weeks in South America with my 890 R:
    make sure your suspension covers bad surprises, too, and travel as light as possible
    I had my suspension tuned to my weight and use, worked perfect on the rough part of Ruta 40 north of Cachi.
    On weight I found still a lot of potential.
    Honestly, I am considering to return to the 690. The 50 kg difference really matter, especially in the rough.

    Again a great video, Adam. I like to ride my 1250GSA onroad, but your content motivates to go offroad. So do I with some friends in April. Rent a T7 and will have an offroad day in northern Germany. Unfortunately we dont have such possibility often, its forbidden to take forrest roads. Anyway, your videos are outstanding. Thanks a lot for your inspiration. I the moment I dont habe any idea to find good argument to my finance minister for a T7 🤣. Take care and all the best from Germany.
