    Here in Alberta, Canada, we had an Agriculture Minister a few years ago that tried to enforce an 8 hour work day for farmers. It clearly wouldn't work for those of us with cattle, so she said, "If you don't put your bulls out at night, you won't have to go out and check to see if cows are calving at night." Hi Tom & Ginger Guy, These MPs seem to forget that the wild buffalo, boar, deer and other animals in Africa that were once so plentiful have been hunted almost to extinction by the rich. Did these animals not produce methane? Also all the hardwood trees that were cleared sold off by wealthy landowners and replaced with conifers to produce bio fuel. Most of these people talk a load of DUNG - Their goal is plain and simple to be re-elected and live off the backs of the workers.

    • @kieranh2005
      @kieranh2005 2 роки тому

      They've been hunted a lot more by the African poor trying to feed themselves, protect their livestock or supply the Asian novelty markets than 'the rich'. Furthermore, most of the culling done in the ivory hunting days was by professional shooters, not 'the rich'.
      Some of these professionals became quite well off, but not like 'the rich'.
      Some of the reserve areas have carefully calculated animal populations, in which overpopulation causes mass starvation and die offs. So the animals have to be culled to maintain the calculated level.
      This is where 'the rich' come in, paying, and paying well for the privilege of hunting these animals and staying in the area. Which is a win win that maintains the status quo.
      Changing the situation to favour the animals over the indigenous Africans would effectively mean genocide. This is a somewhat less than optimal outcome, as I'm sure you'd agree.

      @@kieranh2005 Not seeking to debate this topic. Before the 'white hunter' the natives lived in harmony with the land. Had they not, there wouldn't be a human population in Africa it would have been wiped out long before David Livingstone discovered the Victoria Falls in 1855. The Asian novelty markets only began to demand more Ivory when rich tourist started buying up trinkets. The 'Cull' as you put it is simply an excuse to kill wild animals for 'Sport' and who came up with that term of phrase? Kings, Queens and the idle Rich! So no I don't agree with anything you've said.

    • @gorkyd7912
      @gorkyd7912 2 роки тому

      No they're not idiots, maybe you're an idiot. The shear amount of knowledge people know NOW compared to 100 years ago is mind boggling. Dozens of traffic laws, how to navigate by car, plane or train, how to manage a budget that has over 200 different expense categories electronically AND on paper, how to run 3 businesses simultaneously while taking side gigs and paying taxes on it all following the most complex tax code ever devised, managing 300+ online accounts while maintaining above-average security and sifting through 100 emails per day, using smartphones with a new operating system every year, computers with a new operating system every year, repairing and maintaining internal combustion engines inside the most complex personal vehicles ever made, building and maintaining modern houses that have 1000% more features than old cabins used to have while following the modern BS we call "building codes," FAR more basic health knowledge including everything from how to treat infections to what foods are healthy/unhealthy for different tasks. Every person I know is fully qualified to do almost every profession that existed 100 years ago, but there's 5 billion of us well-educated young people so we're expendable.
      Yeah, maybe I didn't know how much nitrogen fertilizer is used in modern farming, that's a possibility isn't it. But maybe this farmer guy doesn't actually know how much total organic fertilizer exists in his entire country. How do you think he gathered that information? Is there a national manure inventory posted somewhere? Color me a skeptic but I have SOME ability to discern that an MP may have a different source of information than a farmer and maybe the MP is talking about using HUMAN waste; seems appropriate to me that when everyone is apparently full of it you could be using it for emergency fertilizer. Before anyone gets squeamish on me, what do you think a water treatment plant does? If you're OK pouring treated sewage back into your local river why not pouring it on farmland? Either way, the MP's words are meant to reassure the fickle mob that the problem is solvable so there is no run on fertilizer causing another incredible hike in prices. Don't be arrogant, just because you have a 5% view of an issue that you think is correct doesn't mean you've got a corner on knowledge.

      There is a difference between ignorance and stupidity.
      While some people are ignorant about food, where it comes from or how it's processed, I will admit I'm finding more and more idiots out in public.
      But I'm not certain that there's a correlation between there apparently being more idiots nowadays and ignorance about food.
      Maybe there's more idiots because there's more people.
      Maybe the government is breeding more idiots with their social programs.

    The World is getting scarier and scarier every moment. This kind of information should be given in primary schools already. Fertilizer prices are going nuts, gas prices, grain, electricity, everything has gone through the roof. Best bit so far was 3 days ago I read on paper how mayor of our capital city gave a statement that in his opinion all farms which aren't profitable enough should be shut down. Hiring people is extremely expensive, and if you spend your profits to give someone a job - people only see how your farm isn't making enough profit...

    All ridiculously important information moving forward into a precarious few years. This is the reason we watch farming vlogs, so we understand supply chain repercussions and how it affects the consumer. Also helps to see how ag agencies manage, helping or hindering. Please rant away. Please keep sharing your knowledge and opinions. Thanks.

    Excellent video Tom, spelled out in no uncertain terms, the food output catastrophe that is in the making.
    Currently only affecting farmers, but ultimately it will seriously impact the whole population and the economy.
    If you want to get more nitrogen out of your slurry and therefore more grass, dilute it. Sounds stupid, but if you check the figures, the lower the dry matter of the slurry, the higher the nutrient take up by the plant.
    The wetter the better.

    I was watching 10th Generation Farmer in the USA a couple of weeks ago and he is trailing an organic Urea on some of his fields - simply on cost and availability - so that will be interesting to watch his comparison from standard Urea to Organic Urea and the yields they both give - I would like to see what would happen especially with the new paddles to move the slurry pit adding fish fertilizer pallets to the slurry pit and spread it with the muck on the fields or anything else that can be added to the slurry to add the nutrients you want to put on the fields

    Tom,
    Y'all are spot on! Back during WWII they had a program where it was encouraged that every household would grow a "Victory Garden" to provide food for the families so that the large producers could grow for the war effort. Well now we are experiencing similar shortages but instead of people doing their due diligence and taking care of their own food needs they're creating a scare with their hands out worried about where their food will be coming from. I bet the Ginger guy remembers the family garden and the fact that everyone had one. Here in the southern US we keep watching the prices of meat, fruits & vegetables go up with no end in sight. There are already times when certain vegetables are running in short supply.
    Our family started almost 5 years ago with a small garden and raising rabbits. The cost of the rabbits was negligible but the organic fertilizer they produce is insane. We have yet to buy fertilizer for the garden but it does get a weekly dose from under the rabbit cages. So cost to us is almost nothing.
    Keep doing what you are doing and I hope the politicians keep their hands out.

      The other side of this is how viable farmland is being given over to solar farms rather than for its intended purpose. Solar farms should only be allowed on land that is unsuitable for farming. Food security should be up there with national security in the minds ("laugh") of politicians.

    Would you consider tall grass mob grazing with a multi species sward with nitrogen fixers, grass etc. You would have deeper rooting plants wich would help with drainage, the nitrogen fixers will help the fertiliser situation, and there is many other benefits aswell. I'll try and find the video I seen and link it for you

    • @b_uppy
      @b_uppy 2 роки тому

      If you have a diverse-flora field, 'nitrogen-fixers' are hardly necessary because 1) it's the microorganisms that do the fixing, 2) diverse flora provide the supports for the microrganisms to bind the nitrogen.
      Interestingly diverse flora in field does many things. It counterintuitively reduces the need for irrigation, fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides. It does a fibe job of sequestering carbon into the soil, too. Diverse flora plantings means farmers pretty much only need be concerned with toxic plant removal in pastures. It does mean farmers need to start planting multiple-species, continuous cover crops and avoid any bare earth/fallows to reap benefits. Planting must be continuous.
      Planting into annual fields requires a crimper-roller to flatten the cover crops for planting, and seed drills to replant.
      Another method to follow is Mark Shepard's. It increases farm resilience over other systems and is a great method to employ. I suggest reading his book, Restoration Agriculture. It is wonderful.

    Not a farmer, but I’m now 70 and lived in the countryside for most of my life surrounded by farms.
    I’ve been listening to a lot of YouTubing farmers and like you and your dad they all have the same worries about fertilisers and food security. I watch Wardys Weekly Waffle, a Lincolnshire arable farmer who is very knowledgeable (as well as Ollyblogs) and he says it’s unlikely he will be growing wheat suitable for milling as he will be unable to put on enough nitrogen fertiliser. That means there could easily be a shortage of bread flour if other farmers have to do the same. Bread, a staple food and so expensive that it will be out of reach for some people.
