These statues do belong in museums, in my view, with information contextualizing the historical reasons for which they were constructed. However I don't feel bad, even in the slightest, to see them being torn down in this way. I appreciated Sonny’s point. Living in the south, particularly when traveling, if I see the confederate flag I keep it moving. There may be people who feel the flag is a symbol of heritage but I know there are plenty that see it as a symbol of “the good ole days” and I’d rather not determine which type of person I’m dealing with when I come across them.

I am not for censoring or taking down statues just because it reminds people of horrible times. If we are going to ban and censor things that remind us of the Confederacy, then it seems logical to censor the democratic party. They were the Confederates.

I believe Robert E. Lee was against slavery, but led the Confederate army out of loyalty to his home state. Regardless, I recall having this conversation with a buddy back when Charlottesville incident occurred. I agree the statues should come down, but because the community in which the statues stand decide to. The community shouldn’t have to tear them down. The statues certainly shouldn’t be torn down by out of towners.

I don’t agree with a corporation like NASCAR, or state buildings, etc, flying the confederate flag. Frankly, that should have stopped a long time ago. I think it’s trickier to ban private citizens from having the confederate flag. Freedom of speech and expression are part of the constitution.

I appreciated Sonny’s point. Living in the south, particularly when traveling, if I see the confederate flag I keep it moving. There may be people who feel the flag is a symbol of heritage but I know there are plenty that see it as a symbol of “the good ole days” and I’d rather not determine which type of person I’m dealing with when I come across them.

How do you know what that means for each individual, Joe? (By the way, I am Latino and from Texas, too.) While I will not miss the Confederate flags being flown in public spaces (as I never really cared about those emblems one way or another), I have friends who have hung Confederate flags on their cars and consider them as only symbols of Southern heritage. Do I understand that? Not really. But neither do I automatically attribute that to racist attitudes or notions.

Regardless, I recall having this conversation with a buddy back when Charlottesville incident occurred. I agree the statues should come down, but because the community in which the statues stand decide to. The community shouldn’t have to tear them down. The statues certainly shouldn’t be torn down by out of towners.

This doesn't erase history. Instead of destroying statues, add information on the statue stating the full truth of these people. Dedicate a park and other areas to civil rights Champions. Erect statues in their honor. These people include all races everywhere. Teach children the truth. Celebrate the brave people of the past who sacrificed themselves to help others. There are so many great stories to tell.

These thing are important part of American history and I am not even American. Change does not mean getting rid of the old but bringing in the new. Americans can learn a lot of the people in the civil war since they were at war with one another but were able to come together as a country. This is not a time for anger. Stop the hate.
