AC H - I was there twice today- once to walk my dog, once to take pictures. No one asked me for my ID. There were people at barricades- but I did not see any guns, neither did the person I was with. What I did see were tables where people were giving out all sorts of food and water. Earlier today they painted Black Lives Matter on Pike street in white letters- tonight they were painting those letters with different patterns and art on each letter. So far the restaurants in the zone were still doing take out. I saw street musicians, dj’s with outdoor set ups. I’m not here to debate you on what this means politically. I just happen to live near it- and what I am experiencing there is not what is being reported.

The police decided to leave that area and let the protesters stay. The protesters didn’t take over the zone by force or with arms. I agree it’s not a constitutional right to forcefully occupy an area, but that’s not what’s happening here.

Allowing them to do such things promotes communication within a movement and will ultimately prevent rioting because they will be able to clearly communicate their intentions among all people of the movement as police themselves. It’s a small and active neighborhood in Seattle - the site of many peaceful demonstrations over the years. It’s a part of Seattle with historically a good bit of night life, general neighborhood street life and close to two colleges. The mayor, police chief and leaders are all in conversation.
Although there are certainly Trump supporters in the city, this is largely a city that Trump has been notably afraid to visit because of a lack of enthusiasm or outright hostility for him. Plus there is a long history in this western city of independence. The activists, police chief and mayor and general population are unlikely to feel the need for nor ask for the advice of this administration to talk with one another.
People here are distressed about the virus and the national situation politically and police behavior here as well as elsewhere. But I don’t hear people being panicked by activists. I hear people trying to decide whether (because of the virus) it’s safe to go to a protest and interested in how the discussions will proceed and what will be proposed for public safety in the long term. While there are loudmouths everywhere that get press, this is in fact a city where thinking and discussion is valued. In fact discussion ad nauseam is the usual complaint.
It’s notable that those most alarmed tend to be people who live the furthest from the demonstration site.

Joy is right, it's very peaceful in the Seattle CHAZ zone. For example, when one of the occupants (who was accused of stealing a cell phone) was beaten with a baseball bat by a mob of other occupants, they didn't kill him, they only split his head open. Then, when it was found out the cell phone wasn't stolen, but simply misplaced, the individuals who carried out the beating said it was their bad - very nice of them. Plus, when Raz Simone (sp?) found another occupant was spray painting over his spray paint, he didn't beat him up, he sent in his group of seven friends to beat the guy into losing his teeth - again, not killing him. Clearly, this is an area comprised of people who frown upon death and killing, so to label them violent terrorists is just wrong....Joy couldn't be anymore accurate with her assessment.

Im a lefty and I hate trump. However I get what she is saying. In Seattle during occupy Wall Street, the police left the occupiers alone and let them do whatever and rape happened. People are walking around with assault riffles, residents are mad because you have a lot of people roaming the streets intimidating them and shaking them down for money. The police and EMS are not allowed to go into that neighborhood and it is making it dangerous.

the alternative to police is self policing? How would that work? I think the focus should be on how to end police brutality and on what legislative and administrative changes to bring about for real and meaningful police reform.

I live in Seattle, and it’s not as drastic as it sounds. That area did not become its own country. The police just abandoned its offices in that area and the protests were finally able to march in that section. That’s really it. Then some people started calling it “independent area”, and even though that is not really valid it started echoing around the country

These people are crazy. This new state in Seattle is nothing short of anarchy. Meghan seems to be the only one who senses how serious this is.
I say let the mayor and the local residents meet and if they dont want police in their neighborhoods they pay taxes and let them decide on what type of security they want but it has to be a concise decision between all the residents
A cop was targeted for being a cop and shot dead in the head last night. I would call that an act of hate, hence being terrorism.
