    Thanks, I was a white kid in the segregated South, I remember the separate drinking fountains and bathrooms, over half of the Stores were white only and it was unthinkable that blacks could eat in a white restaurant,, the government was quite oppressive, I guess I was woke because i secretly admired MLK.

    I just drove coast to coast, CA to FL. Basically uneventful but several times I felt threatened when I mentioned I was from CA and one time in particular I was called a "commie". I don't think I would make the trip again. It really sucks!

    What's Next: Matt Lewis' Day Off? Matt Lewis' Breakfast Club? Matt Lewis and the Temple of Doom? I agree, I can't wrap my head around half the country taking Trump seriously as a potential world leader. I gather the MAGA nuts have lost the plot, but that anyone who isn't corrupt or mad would contemplate Trump I can't see.

      They fell for the Putin attack to divide Americans and his propaganda is coming through Fox and Newsmax. His connections to Murdoch are well known. He is being successful and he knows it. Putin also helped back Hamas and the attack on Israel. Maga is not a fluke. It was well planned attack on the Constitutional order of the US and always a goal for Putin.

    On the topic of forgetting the recent past. I’ve seen a few movies from the 80s/90s recently. Like Dirty Harry or silences of the lambs, and the place of women in the workplace now is so so different. I think people under 30 would be shocked. They don;t think that disregard and causal chauvinism could ever return.

    The most serious issue facing America is the lack of confidence in the voting system. Whether the system is sound is important, but the appearance of reliability is equally important. We need one day, in person voting. A national voting day holiday is a great idea.

    • @TechnoLawyer
      @TechnoLawyer 2 місяці тому +2

      You realize that the exact same election deniers would still make shit up to sow discord even if we had a national voting day holiday, vote one day, everyone vote in person?
      Also, why’s it have to be one day? I live in Texas. We have almost no vote by mail (almost nobody qualifies), but a long period of early in person voting. You have to show ID to vote. Why isn’t this secure? Why does allowing it to happen on more than one day somehow make it not secure?

    In 2003 the national debt was 3.9 trillion. Look at all the great things we've done since. Iraq, Afganastan, Libya, Syria, Ukraine, and Gaza. 20 years later our debt stands at 34 trillion. The recent 1.2 trillion budget deal had a little over 70 % for military and defense spending. You wonder why people are disillusioned? I'm a boomer and I've noticed the most hawkish people are the ones who have already had success. Young people today will not have the same opportunity as people did 50 years ago.

    Chris Hayes praised the economy in a smart way. It was something like, American capitalism at it’s best fails many Americans but in comparison to pass economies and expectations of where it would be now, the economy under Biden is a remarkable success. JVL of the Bulwark basically say the same thing more bluntly

The best I hope for at every election is a split ticket so none of them make anything worse even if nothing is gonna get better.

I guess he didn’t see that from his lofty Harvard job perspectiveincome equality went on hyper overdrive once Reagan/the top tax rate and tax the middle class to pay for it… Prove me fucking wrong

    5:47: Did Matt give the belief that "transgender [sic] story hour" wouldn't destroy America as an example of Scher's distinctively liberal confidence in American institutions?

    • @MattLewis
      @MattLewis  2 місяці тому +1

      I don’t express that very clearly or eloquently. It could be anything. Gays in the military. The trans issue, in general. Illegal immigration. Things that (fairly or not) conservatives oppose(d). But here’s the thing: Even if these things don’t hurt America, in and of themselves, if they create a right wing backlash (that leads to electing people like Trump), then they hurt America. How much can she take? I don’t know. But at some point, there comes a breaking point.
      That’s not to say we should never change or evolve. But Burkean conservatism favors slow evolution and prudent reform.

      @@MattLewis Gotcha, thanks. I think that's fair. I don't think those issues are "intrinsically" threatening to the country, but agree that, depending on how they're pursued or addressed, could contribute, and maybe have contributed, to a backlash that would pose an existential threat.
      If you're interested, I strongly recommend Haney-Lopez' work on this topic. He's researched messaging for racial justice movements that doesn't prompt backlash from whites (and even often wins their support).

    Love the show. It's become must listen to.
    I think the voters in the middle just hate the idea of handing power to the wings of either party. They'd vote for Biden if they thought he would be vigorous enough to resist the radical wing of his own party. Sadly, once he's reelected, there are no guardrails, so fearing that choice makes sense. You don't want to legitimize or normalize MAGA ideas either.

    Has Matt Lewis taken on the MSNBC model of association? It’s been a while since this alleged conservative spoke with a Trump supporter. I’d think if you can get the authors of a contemptible book like “White Rural Rage” on the show, you could find time for even a grudging Trump voter.
