- Installing new bushings in my M5OD shifter in my 1988 Ford F-150. Engine is a 4.9L inline six and it's 2wd. This should significantly improve your shifter feel and driving quality. No more hunting for and grinding gears. Hope this helps someone. My apologies for the camera angles. I'm trying to get better with what I have at the moment. Thanks for watching!

What if it's not in neutral how ya know how to put shifter in ?
For mine, things had gotten out of alignment due to the loose shifter. We took a large flathead screwdriver and popped one metal tab into place so that all three were in a line left to right. Not sure if that will make sense without a photo or video.
@@starlingdarkness9316 thanks bro. I appreciate you taking the time to tell me THANKS
How did the shifter bolt come out? I removed the nut but has threaded rod going thru the shifter how do you remove that
You take the nut and thread it on the other side until the stud pops out. Sometimes you might need to tap it the last bit of the way out with a small hammer.
This is a pretty good start to a video series! May I film a video of you with your hens sometime in the spring?
Is this also called a shift assembly?
The shifter bushings are not called a shifter assembly. That's usually some not regularly replaced parts. I don't know what you're looking at so I can't really say.
@@eb0800 thank you, finally got a diagram and a mechanic who names real parts. We're looking for the forks n shifter
@@WubiWatkins You should be able to find the forks on Amazon or Rockauto.com. I bought the two primary forks on Amazon thinking my transmission needed them and then discovered mine were practically brand new when I took it apart. Just realize that there are two different materials used. The ones in my truck were cast iron/steel materials. I think that maybe in the later models that used the M5OD and/or the Rangers that used the light duty M5OD have aluminum forks. I have no way of knowing which type your transmission uses. I just got lucky that I ordered the correct ones for mine. I'm not sure if you mean the shifter arm that you actually shift with is worn out or if the little ball and shaft it attaches to are worn out. The arm is an eBay or junk yard only part to my knowledge. You should be able to find the ball and shaft on Amazon or Rockauto or eBay. I'd consider that the bushings are worn out before changing this part though. Mine were absolutely gone for who knows how long and my ball and shaft part was fine. Good luck with the repairs. Less and less people know how to repair older equipment like this and so I know it can get frustrating.
Whats the name of part where you put the blushing? I don't know how is that call
The bushing technically goes into the transmission top cover, but if you mean the thing sandwiched between the bushing I don't know the actual name of it. It's the shifter arm or ball arm or something like that. Just Google M5OD exploded diagram and you should be able to find the term.
Does this apply to a 1991 ford f150 with the Mazda Mro5 or something like that
This video works for those trucks. 4.9L V6 and 5.0L V8 M5OD-R2 transmissions are the same. It also applies to later 4.2L V6 and 4.6L modular 5 speeds.
I'm working on my 93 but it's not clear on the pins u are driving out any help would be appreciated is it possible for u to call me
do you have a link to the shifter rebuild?

This is the kit I bought. There are others that include the three screws, but they come at a premium. If you need the screws you're probably better off getting them at Lowe's or Home Depot.
that bolt you were holding in the beginning, do you know where i could find one? I know its a specialty bolt and i just cant for the life of me find one. Thanks
My best guess is a u-pull-it junk yard or you could try calling a rebuilder to see if they have any.
@@eb0800 thanks for the response, i believe i have found it. Thanks!
@@shitboxenthusiast1557 where'd you find it?
@@bananachicken8385 I had found what i believed was it on a ford part site but turned out it wasnt the wrong part. We ended up fabbing the bolt up so it worked for ourselves. Best bet is to go to a pull apart or junkyard
@@shitboxenthusiast1557 yeah, I been searching everywhere for it, can't find it. Mine is pretty worn. Thanks! I appreciate that!
