First wave has to be the worst wipeout I’ve ever seen at The Wedge.

Remember this wave all too well. Went body surfing there when I moved to Huntington in late 80's and had just moved from Seattle. Not sure of the size but I took the wave late, it took me up and over, my face smashed into the sand when the water pulled away and just heard a craaaaaaaaaaaaack run all the way up my neck. Never did it there again. Stick will the 2-3 footers in HB.
there's no way mother nature intended for this wave to actually be ridden at this size. this is insane and i love it

I remember when it was only body surfing there. Never saw a belly board until George Greenough showed up one day. I lost at least 5 pairs of fins there.
Body surfed there quite a few time, in the early 70s. Can't tell you how many times I got slammed to the ground. It will definitely wear your ass out.
Yeah I was there in those days too, and Ron Kozwalski (sp?) started kneeboarding it, and a few guys had Paipo boards.

Riding in from the left on a waist high wave into a double overhead monster is one of the coolest things in the surfing world.

The Wedge waves are short, big, fast and powerful. This was my second home in the 70s and 80s. I'll never forget as me and a friend dove in to the calm before the storm, the lifeguard yelling outside boys. Beach was packed and only a few of the regulars in the water, and normally outside at the Wedge was maybe a 20 second swim. These were the biggest waves I've ever seen or been in since. Breaking and reforming at the end of the jetty with the last being the size of a tsunami. Breaking way over the jetty wall and into the harbor. Couldn't set up being the last out but had the opportunity to swim up the face and look down and out over the jetty and shore at the beach goers who appeared to look like ants then shoot thru the lip and down the backside and bodysurfing this monster wave to the 10 other people on the other side. I never felt more alive that day and exhilarated. We went to the Jolly Roger on Balboa Island for lunch after and remember the waitress saying I looked like I had seen a monster. I was in my Kanvas by Katin surf trunks with sand and salt still in my hair and told her I had and it had seen me.
Chiropractor , the Wedge is on of the Heaviest wave in the World 🌎. When the wave breaks the ground shakes u can hear it walking from the parking lot .It ain't no joke.
There is no parking lot! You have to park in a neighborhood.
@@TheRakuman When I used to work down there people who asked if the wedge was pumping, I said there is always two ways to know, one You cannot find a place to park, Two: If you can't hear it, it ain't pumping.

Check out the clean up set, let's take off as far behind the peak as possible, them surfer's are crazy and tough, can be a dangerous combanation. The ocean is going off just hearing the surf. One other little tidbit the water is cold, all I'm saying is don't F with a Wedge surfer there Gladiators ! ⚔️

I finally got to see one of these crazy surges in person, saw the surf report this morning (the day of this footage) and hauled ass down to the wedge, absolutely nuts. The sound was almost deafening. Jamie Obrien was down there catching waves and signing peoples faces and shirts, so much fun just to watch these guys going for it.
I thought Jamie was back in Hawaii tho

@@brandons772 Yes indeed! I follow him on Instagram @rj51photos and saw that he was there at The Wedge. So when I saw this video I looked for him and there he is. Tall guy with what looks like a gray baseball cap standing behind a camera on a tripod. I was a big fan of his while he pitched for the Seattle Mariners some 20 years ago.

Randy Johnson was a Pitcher at Livermore High School in Nor Cal. All I was saying. I’ve surfed both and the water temp, the kelp, the rocks and current up there make surfing tough. Cool post!

Tip to photographers: Don't set your camera bag down at your feet on the sand . I saw a rouge wave come in and wash over a guy's kit. Salt water is not good for camera equipment. The equipment will be a total loss.

Wedge gets bigger than Sandy Beach shore break. Sandy is more comparable with Cylinders at Wedge. I've body surfed. The Wedge, many days. Sandy, enough to earn respect of locals.

Extremely crowded during big swells. A lot of the photographers in the front row got cleaned up by big sets.
