- The forecast for the 4th was listed to be the biggest day in a few years. Next thing you know they announce they are closing down the beach in all of Orange County and LA. Had to risk it and go check it out. Being the first on on the sand i noticed the gates were open and it was go time.
Surfers include: Jamie O'Brien, Tyler Thornsley, Blair Conklin, Brad Domke, Sage Burke, Dawson Tylers, Dylan ZaZueta, Bobby Okvist and a lot more
Bodyboarders include: Tanner McDaniel, Craig Whetter, Cory Bolter, Chad Barba an a lot more.

I’ve lived by the beach in Southern California all my life and I’m still terrified of the power of the ocean. Impressed, amazed, mesmerized, and terrified by it. I’ll stick to snowboarding and let you maniacs have the waves.

@Barry in the us last year only 39 people died snowboarding total. 76 surfers died from drowning alone according to the national weather service. I’ll agree you’re more likely to get injured snowboarding.

used to go all the time But the summer of 95 was the last straw. thought I was going to have to paddle down to balboa pier to get out of the water. I made it to cylinders and got out there.
I was exhausted. waves wouldn't stop coming.
a few of my friends went and a handful of chicks..never again.

JOB is king at this kind of wedging barrel as he pretty much owns pipe. Not surprising he squeezed out the wave of the day !
A reminder that he's doing it on a 6' foamie as well.
I think the Wedge is more of an equaliser here. He got a few pits but, at pipe he'd be dominating. At the wedger he's just another guy eating shit 90% of the time

Have really enjoyed looking at your superb video - full of action from beginning to end with amazing wave shots and terrific poundings ! I like the strong sunlight sparkling on the wave fronts with all the foam suds and boiling surf - interesting to see the beach life alongside all the waves !
I absolutely love the opening clip, Craig Whetter big air to landing on Jamie O’Brien. It looked like he got tangled in Jamie’s board too. I hope Jamie dived hard enough, that looked full gnarly man😵

It's sad to see what's happening to that state. So much beauty there. The surf, the Sequoias, Yosemite NP, are all amazing sights. It's a paradise ruined by politics.

The dismount of this wave is absolutely worth a look. It was Tyler I think the video master said. He took 10 of air on a relaxed front full flip off a board. Vid time 9:33 AND @-32:50 for a more relaxed exit!
The second wave's super floater I literally see as the ultimate potential finishing move for giant wedge stand up surfing. Where else can you go besides close out tube, mediocre mid wave carve, or pull out, you know? So, sick stuff, Jamie. If only you tried sticking the landing. Hopefully more surfers follow your lead..
He got stuck up there, and ran out of gas. If he could have - no doubt he would have tried to stick the landing.

I noticed the full moon last night. It was eerie, just above LAX airport right at dusk. Sky was blue. Moon was orange. (it turns white after it rises up.) Surf charts showed major south swell. Weather all day was clear skies, windy and kinda hot and dry. Freaky signs. I knew it was big. Happy July 4.

Leashes do more harm than good at this type of break. Your board just wash's up to the beach. It's not that far from the break
Better to lose a board than be dead.

I remember sitting on the beach waiting for the sun to rise......to surf....🥰

The Dirty old Wedge. Rode there three times on a Boogie Board, back in the summer of 84, that was more then enough, maybe two times more then I needed. Its nasty. Pile drives people into the sand. People have been severely injured and even killed. I was lucky, or maybe some one up there really does look after fools. Any ways, never again. That is just pumping. I then went back to Huntington and rode my 10 foot tanker board. Summer of 84 was fun, sort of :)

While I was growing up, I spent every summer at a sailing camp (we also rode horses, backpacked in the Sierra Nevadas, etc, in Santa Cruz, CA. Our 36 ft 6 ton sloop was berthed in Santa Cruz, & we'd sail all over Monterey Bay almost every day. In the summer of either 1976 or 1977, for three (3) days there appeared an unusual increase in the number of sea life, including the type. We could tell from the number of spinner dolphin leaping out of the water and spinning. At the time, we didn't know why this was happening. However, three days later there was a large Earthquake in or near Indonesia. I can't remember exactly where or when, but I remember it was during the summer because a few days after the earthquake we went to the beach but the waves were so incredibly high we couldn't play in the waves or bodysurf, let alone surf (I first learned to surf farther up the beach). We didn't want to go into the water, even a few feet from shore, because the giant waves, which were probably double to triple their typical size that time of year, were bringing up sand and broken shells from deeper down where they hadn't been smoothed & softened from the constant waves pounding them. As a result, the grains of sand & crumbled shells were sharp, spiked and hard, and they slashed and whipped your legs and skin wherever it was exposed. I see sand just like that in many of the waves at The Wedge; lucky for the surfers and bodysurfers that they're wearing bodysuits.

Has anybody on here swam or 🏄♂️ the wedge? If so what was your experience like? I was there and it looked horrible. And I was not afraid of the sea. But that small area was different.
Sandy to answer your question about what it’s like out there it’s pretty insane it’s so so much bigger when you’re out there looking up at the waves and the power of the waves it’s beautiful but it’s truly a rush

Shit I remember this, there was a boat that washed ashore and I went snorkeling at 15th street(which is about a mile or 2 away from wedge) and I found the boat
