- This video was requested by one of you dirty potters. when re-glazing your pottery remember few things.
1. the reason glaze dries fast when at bisque is because the pores are still open. fully glazed and matured pottery will not have open pores so your really just putting glaze on top of glaze and hoping it will combine with the other glaze when it reaches temp.
2. because of reason #1 you should save a little more time to re-glaze your pots then just regular glazing them.
3. once dry it will smudge very easily , be careful

I had a buttload of pots that I was waiting on come out tonight and I'm super SAD. So my questions are 1) does reglazing work for things fired to cone 10? 2) does it need to be refired differently than pots that are going through 1st firing? 3) for the ones that were thinner applications the first time is there a way I can preserve texture while trying to change the color or do you gotta sacrifice it at that point ? And 4) why have the pottery gods spurned me so?
1 yes as long as you fire it to the same temp . ( Don't put cone 10 glaze in a. Cone 10 kiln and think it'll fuse
2. No, fire it the same as the first time, just a little thicker coat of glaze
3 depends on the glaze
4 we saw you try to trim bone dry pottery one time and this is your punishment.
Really liked the first "throw away" bowl. I enjoyed how the colors mottled together on the lower half of the bowl.

I've reglazing numerous pieces but I spray hairspray on first. It does wonders for holding your glaze in place

I hope you teach ceramics in real life as well… Seems like you would be an excellent and fun teacher! I am currently taking a night class for fun… it is a beginner class, but I took a semester of it in college about 20 years ago. We only have one or two classes left, so I am going to try and re-Glaze the pots I don’t like thanks to your teachings. There were about 10 classes, and although I like my teacher as a person, she has done a terrible job as a teacher… she only talked to us for about 10 minutes on how to glaze 🤦🏻♀️. So I’ve found myself online having to find videos like this to teach myself… So thanks for being a teacher I can appreciate!

I put pottery in my microwave for 2 minutes before reglazing it helps the first layer stick and dry a bit faster.
That's actually a good idea, I was taught to do the same thing but with a heat gun, but I don't like using heat guns really

Wow I didn't even know you could do this! I don't have my own kiln yet and only fire my pottery at a local school. When one of my pieces came out all blotchy I asked if I could just apply another glaze coat on top of it and the lady there told me that once it's glazed, it's done.. But now I want to give it a try! ah same! i feel like i barely learn from my actual professor and i had a cup come out all white when i thought the glaze was a red/purple color but i was warned AFTER glazing that there’s a rare chance that anyone gets the effect and now i wanna try reglazing to see what happens! i want my own wheel and kiln so bad but one day!!!

I made a little teapot in like the 80's or something, but I've never ever been happy with the glazing, it was some crap left over. I would so love to refire it! I keep wondering about giving it a sanding first? Would that help at all? I saw that someone said hairspray helps, hm...

I love opening the kiln after a glaze fire its like opening a treasure box. oh my dont throw away anything that can go in the yard with a little plant or drain dish. the old lady down the street would love to have a new drain dish. good luck and happy making : )
The only problem with putting any pieces like these in the yard is that they may not hold up to the weather conditions. There is a world of difference between clay&glazes for useful items like bowls and plates, compared to yard items like pots and art sculptures. The clay alone really needs to be different in order to stand up to the fluctuation in temperatures, as well as glazes for outdoor spaces.
yes this may be true but what does it hurt to make a piece useful for a time? Unless the potter, pour, slump is a perfectionist and wants nothing out there that has a small flaw, (which is impossible for every piece.) How many times has one made a piece and the learning curve came from it? What one may see as imperfection another may see as beauty. Most people bring in there plants at freezing time.
I have been told to sand my pot prior to trying to reglaze, as well as put it in the microwave to heat it up. Do you recommend these methods? Thanks for your informative videos.

How do you prep your pottery that needs to be reglazed? Do you wipe down with alcohol to remove grease/dust? Do you lightly spray with hairspray to give something for the new glaze to grip on to?

Just found your channel and I really like it! I'm just discovering hand build pottery so I'm new to all of it. I appreciate your approach to teaching as well as your talent.
I'm familiar with Amaco glazes, but there were some glazes you talked about that were foreign to me.
For example, one was Randy Red (I think?),
there was another glaze you said was really runny and it I think it had a "fancy" name and the last one turned came a honey color and was stunning!
Did you formulate those on your own? It not, could you tell me if I can purchase them and then where to do it?

Yes, if I name a glaze that cannot be store-bought I most likely made it myself. I prefer to make my own glazes but honestly some of the Store bought glazes are just more stable and reliable than the ones I make myself

Do you ever preheat your pieces before re-glazing? My pottery teacher does that when he re-glazes. He preheats to 200. He never said why but I had the feeling it was to help the wet re-glaze dry faster. His stuff was all cone 10 so maybe that made the difference. He also had a programmable kiln not a kiln sitter.

Ive just picked up one of my mid sized sculptures from a firing studio - in the process of building my own kiln. Totally disappointed AGAIN with the mid cone glaze, note to self "dont use them anymore!!" Anyway its a complicated piece and it cracked in the glaze firing and the glaze looks shitty. 1.Have you ever glazed over a cone 5/6 with a cone 10? 2.Have you ever or do you know of a complete alternative to covering a ceramic sculpture if I needed to bond the cracks - like a type of paint that has a resin/ glaze finish, or that acts similarly to a glaze? 3. If i fill the cracks and refire with the ghastly amaco celadon that I used will the cracks reopen/ will the glaze cover the cracks?
4. Can I use a different glaze altogether as long as it is cone 6 - like do a double dip thick coat of stoneware glaze combination by Mayco over the celadon amaco?
So need a glaze councillor!! I think I hate cone 5/6 glazes... never been disappointed with anything fired at cone 10! I was seduced by the fancy colors!

Hi, I was wondering if there’s a way to remove the glazes from a figurine?
I would like to repaint it with possibly acrylic pain and seal it with a gloss.
Please let me know, I’ve been doing research and every time I search for a solution, I don’t get the answer.
I’d prefer not to use sandpaper, that seems like a lot of work, maybe there’s a solution that’ll melt the paint off?

This is so different from the way I was thought to reglaze. I'll put it in the kiln to heat up at about 50°C, take it out using gloves and reglaze it really quick before it can cool off again, using the gravity feed spray gun. Because the piece is warm it will dry immediately. Mix in a little sugar or CMC (cellulose gum) to the glaze to make it stick better.
Yeah , both ways work. This is just an easy way to do it for most and without heat and re opening pores
EarthNation Ceramics yes, heating the piece and working fast so it doesn't get cold is a hassle and spray guns are tricky. I'll definitely try your method next time :)
dude, instead of throwing them away - give them to a shelter or leave them by the bin for someone in need to take them...
When I give someone a piece of artwork of mine it will be good, it will be meaningful, and it will have a usable surface unlike the majority of the things I throw away. Attachment is not an art I practice.
I've gone to studios and seen tiny mountains of beautiful glazed shards tossed in the backyard with so much potential for a new life in the hands of mosaic artists. I know its probably a pain in the ass to organise though...but that gold is dreamy! Thanks for the vid
Are you saying giving to a shelter isn't meaningful I'm sure most of your stuff is usable and it doesn't have to be good tell them your 8 year old self made it and he is a goof ball but he did his best. Just like every child that makes something for their parents it may not be good but it's sweet.

@@EarthNationCeramics Shelters are always in need of bowls, where I studied, every end of a session, we would give all the bowls that were usable to some shelter, they were always so grateful, maybe you should start. And by the way,I like your videos because you explain things very well but man, you have to many adds.
I think some people are missing the point here... Craftspeople may be able to easily give away pieces because the purpose of having made the object is for it to be used, but for an artist the usability or application is not the point, the creation of the art is. Artist can do whatever he damn want with his own pieces, he doesn't owe anybody squat. This is a great opportunity to study Maslow; artists are the only breed who turn the hierarchy pyramid on its head.
I know I'm 4 years late but I just did my first glaze firing in my own kiln! But I could only afford the pint of glaze to brush on and they're super streaky! It was a low fire to 05. Do you think this would work to even out the streakyness? I'm going to nceca next week and wanted to bring something!
I know this is an old video so the chances of a reply are lower but I have a piece that I wanted to reglaze in my instructor said I would need to take a Dremel and grind off the glaze that's there in order to get another layer to stick. I was wondering what your thoughts on that is
So you can cook them with the rest of your glaze pieces no problem? Just at cone 5.
I need to do this to some pieces where the entire glaze turned out uneven and porous, so it should be fine if I just put a clear overtop right?

@@EarthNationCeramics Thank you for taking the time to respond! I began throwing 8 weeks ago and I love it. I was considering leaving my current science-y job downstream if I advanced enough but after talking to a handful of instructors/potters I noticed everyone is balancing a couple of hustles to keep afloat (even the talented ones). I guess with mass manufacturing etc. it's hard to compete... among many other reasons I haven't considered. Your response seems to support this notion. I will still continue to throw as a hobby if that's the case!

Honestly, especially in an economy where people are losing their jobs left and right because of the virus I would keep your job unless it's under extreme circumstances for now.
If you're really about that clay life use some of the money from your science job to fund your pottery to start you off. Then slowly transfer.

Could you please tell us the manufacturer, product name, number, and where to order gum solution?
I have two jars of this line of Amaco glaze, both in the same condition. The local store gave it to me for free for that very reason, but it's nice glaze. I tried just water, but that doesn't work. The glaze cracks and falls off the bisque without the gum solution, and I don't know where to get it.

OK, I don't know jack about pottery. I just came here after googling how to reglaze a coffee mug because I want a mug like they use on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and I found one the right shape, but the wrong color. Anyway, this is way more entertaining than I expected.
Dante, could you possibly talk about stilt marks? I recently fired 5 bowls on stilts because the person who commissioned them wanted flat bottoms without glaze, but wanted the glaze to go all the way down the sides. I was shocked there were 3 little brown marks left on the clay, and in two instances, the stilt had shifted and went up into the glaze on the side. I sanded down the marks in the glaze, but want to try your method of adding back some glaze and re-firing. That being said, is there anything I can do about the stilt marks. I was thinking I could glaze the bottoms and minimize the marks. What do you think?
I have seen some people put wax on the metal part of the stilts. I wonder if that would help.

is it possible to fix a cracked cup by re-glazing the 2 pieces back together and firing them again thus welding the pieces together with glaze?

Yes you can use the heat gun, I prefer to use the natural heat of the Sun so I prefer to glaze my stuff on a sunnier day where it will automatically dry faster without extra effort from a heat gun. And yes you can also spray your glaze we just haven't gone over that yet

You probably can but it depends on what glaze you use.
the tough thing about craziness back the cracks go all the way down to the clay body.
And it's highly unlikely that reglazing something although it gets rid of the cracks would get rid of those deep deep crazes

I have my grandmothers crock bowl. I want to use it. But there is a hole in the bowl like a pit. Its bigger than a pinhole. Like food and stuff would get stuck in it. Can I patch it so its food safe?
If it was handmade you can probably find the Potter and they can just put more glaze in there and refire it. Which would make it food safe if the glaze took.
But if it was bought from a store there's probably thousands of them out in the world. You would have to know how to fire it and what cone, ect, ect.
I always heat my pieces up before glazing. In an oven, with a heat gun or a torch.

I never understood why you'd toss away some of the ceramics.. for me they're all still astonishingly beautiful and useful. This is such a waste of materials and other resources in the process of their production & the transportation + all the energy that came along with using the kiln. With the amount you throw away, we can easily calculate how many times you filled a whole kiln with creations you've thrown away. I've read some of the other comments on this and to say the truth, your reply is utterly selfish. To some extent, I can comprehend why an artist have to keep their ego for perfection and the need to sell them, otherwise they'll feel "worthless", but please, I plea for this. Just because it doesn't reach your standard, doesn't mean no one else wants or needs it. We as humans already produce a MASSIVE AMOUNT of waste and what you're doing right here is probably what many other people do when they're unsatisfied their work, but please, think of trash as the last option. Better if it wouldn't be an option at all. With all means, I don't intend to offend nor nitpick you specially, just a reminder to harm to environment a tiny bit less by sharing with others than filling up landfills.
