Galaxy Song, taken from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. Terry Jones picked this as part of his Top 10 Monty Python Movie Moments for Esquire Magazine -
"It's such a lovely song. I think it's one of the best things Eric [Idle]'s ever done. There was going to be more animation but Terry was so busy with other parts of the film we ended up using more of the live-action parts that I'd shot for safety."

this is fucking art.
RainAngel111 not just art........IT'S GENIUS!!!!!!
R. Kidd definately the art of genius' :)
RainAngel111 which in entirely different than regular art.
dZ Thane or possibly the genius of art :)
RainAngel111 No this isn't fucking art. This is fucking ART!
I always found this song incredibly moving. And then I would get mad at myself for crying during a Monty Python song. But I've made peace with it now.
The song is very moving. It makes you feel insignificant. That heals you. Same as you look at mountains and stars. You feel insignificant. Your issues are even smaller. That is healing. It is a song against depression and anxiety.
OP, completely with you. It’s good to make peace 😅
Nice to stumble on this comment as I tear up listening to this. Not sure why I am tearing up. But I am.
you are not alone!@@EnricoPallazo
It's Pure Genius - I post it to Flat Earthers and Explain that Monty Python understood the nature of space better than them 40 Years ago
R.I.P Terry Jones. No one could play a woman like you.
Imagine this being his obituary...

Brian's mom.
Whenever life gets you down, Mrs.Brown
And things seem hard or tough
And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft
And you feel that you've had quite enough
Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour
Of the galaxy we call the 'milky way'
Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide
We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point
We go 'round every two hundred million years
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe
The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, the speed of light, you know
Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely is your birth
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space
'Cause it's bugger all down here on Earth
His singing voice is pure comfort.
Eric Idle's character reminds me of Gene Wilder in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I learned more from this song than all of high school.
This is exactly the song I needed to put things into perspective. Thank you all of you wonderful actors. I was lucky enough to have a mum and a dad who were permissive enough to let me see things like Monty Python in my youth, and it has definitely helped me through some tough times.
A man comes out of a fridge with no warning or preamble, sings a little show tune, then it's right back into the fridge with no explanation ever given. :) I love Monty Python.
A.M. there is an explanation it is to convince people to give up their livers
Well you have to admit..... that's the best analogy for life on earth within the context of the universe.
@@brendanmccabe8373 But I'm still using it!
This song is so brilliant, the world as a whole hasn’t yet recognized its brilliance. One day, they will. Some of us do now, that’s why we’re all here, isn’t it? Well, one day, the rest of the world will catch up. It may take several more generations, but this song will be remembered on a much larger scale later down the road. I just know it.
My entire school sang this.
Every day.
For more than 5 years.
And they still sing it.
And I will never forget it.
Ever. ._.
Good, you shouldn't forget it.
1:55 One Of the most clever & beautiful key changes ever, and it's in a comedy Python song!
I love this bc it describes exactly what I do when frustrated with humans: think about the things as far off from humans as possible. Space is the ultimate!
I come here a couple of times a year to listen to this song.
so true it's the same for me
Whenever anyone asks me what my favorite song is, i tell them this. The last line of the song is the most reassuring line ever written in musical history (to me anyway): "So remember when you're feeling very small and insecure, how amazingly unlikely is your birth, and pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space cause there's bugger all down here on earth"
Exactly! I love that line.
Week. A couple times a week
This film was fantastic to just in a small way actually give something that you could call the meaning of life and make it the funniest thing ever
Enjoy the wonders of the universe, Terry. You'll be dearly missed.
This has kept me humming happily during several sad times in my life.
One of their very best songs.
I love the fact that I was introduced to this song whilst doing a higher physics exam and now I LOVE IT! 😂
Did you ever notice that the search for intelligent life in the universe is always done with telescopes pointing away from Earth?
What a great song.😄
this song is surprisingly genuine and sweet
Boy oh boy, this song will learn ya some humility in short order!
Seriously. as crazy as I am about "Life of Brian" as a whole, this particular piece is my favorite bit of Monte Python's movie work.
(Since this view has always been held in disdain by friends, I was pleased as punch when Eric Idle was quoted a few years ago as saying that among his compositions this was his favorite.)
Watching, and adoring, this song, for the first time in my life, tonight. It took me 32 years of living on this Earth to know Monty Python and it totally worth it. I am totally enjoying them.
I think in my very humble opinion some of the point of the song is being missed it is after all entertainment written with humour. I am not sure that t is was written and performed for the dissection of fact checkers but more to put a smile on our faces and perhaps it was more meant to tell us not to take life or ourselves too seriously because we are in the grand scheme of things quite insignificant!
Holy Grail was my first introduction... probably when I was four or five. That movie will always hold a special place in my heart.
Came back to this after the discovery of more galaxies by use of the James Webb and it's amazing, this song never loses its relevance, nor it's wit!
Such a tonic for that 'Monday morning' feeling.
I love this song. At some point, someone set this song with photographs of galaxies. So I was sent this song by my grandmother when I was about 8. It was a shock to hear it watching this movie the first time, and realizing that my grandmother sent me part os an R rated movie unknowingly.
The era before realistic CGI. Times have changed 😏
Actually it's hand drawn.
Magnus Husemoen
That's my point dummy, it's not CGI, but it's still filmed in an era before realistic CGI. Remember, we had TRON before this film.
Would you really want realistic CGI?..... 2:00 :)

I never said it was a bad thing ;-)
Haha, true. It would not be pretty eh! :D
GENIUS, PURE GENIUS
RIP Mrs. Brown.
I wish whimsical people would come out of my refrigerator and sing meaningful ditties to me every now and then.
Your refrigerator needs to be at least 32 years old. If it is at least 32 years old and no whimsical people start coming out of it to sing about the universe, then it probably means you're keeping it under poor sanitary maintenance. If your refrigerator is less than 32 years old and people DO start jumping out of it, then you should probably call the police.
***** That took a delightfully funny turn. Thanks for the laugh :)
And then their were four. RIP Terry J

Thank you 😊 I remember watching this when I was very very very young thank you Monty Python lol. Thanks for the reminder. Oh odd side tangent a few things have existed as long as I've known lol. Monty Python is one of them. I turned 50 this year. Thanks for always being there.
What episode of Dr.Who is this?

fuck now I REALLY want Eric Idle to play the Doctor
Classic 👌 The final lines of this song sums up the current situation on earth.
Gotta love Eric Idle

"And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space, cos there's bugger all down here on Earth!" Too good of a line.
Best line ever.
Its nice to know regardless of my life and the messed up things in it I can always come back to this song and know life isn't so serious and sometimes you need to take a few minutes to bring yourself back down to earth and be grateful
I love your words!

The best song ever written.
My science teacher told us to memorize this song for astronomy... I love my science teacher.
Rip man, legend

The best scientific song ever (including for this show), I bet it's true
Thanks for securing me in the roots of planet Earth. Us humans need to be just contented, rather than chasing dreams.
Teacher: Okay class, tell me what the galaxy is
The smart kid:
"Why haven't aliens discovered us yet ?" Because it's like finding a needle in a haystack x 1000
Everyone in astronomy class should be required to memorize this song.
Aside from the intro... My science teacher made us learn this song and perform for the chemistry class... So these lyrics are welded in my brain

haha, isn't that strange? (still doesn't really answer our questions of why we're here and what its all about though does it)? love the pythons. i live in liverpool england, did you know that george Harrison funded monty pythons life of brian when warner brothers pulled the plug after they read the script at the last minute? he actually appears in the film too. might find it if you search - George Harrison life of brian on here!!
It makes me feel about the powerful being that I am and also meantime makes me realize how stupid I am to attach so much of significance to everything...
Exactly.
There's bugger all down here on earth.
Truer words have never been sung.
I cant stop coming back to this video
This song speaks volumes, specially that end bit of it!
Magnifique
In 1983 when this movie was made, his distances weren't too far off. They've obviously been updated since then.
Rest in peace Terry Jones who died today :-( xx
So true. Every word. Love Monty Python.
‘Cause there’s bugger all down here on Earth.
The best Monty Python song.
I only get Justin Bieber in my fridge. That's why I never open it any more.

For those who'd like to see the lyrics, I transcribed them, love this song so much, Eric and the whole team at Monty Python. Happy New Year! May the 20s be roaring again for all of us in this expanding Universe:
"Just remember that ur standing on a planet that's evolving... revolving at 900 miles an hour... that's orbiting at 90 miles a second so it's reckoned...a sun that is the source of all our power.... the sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see... are moving at a million miles a day... in an outer spiral arm of 40 thousand miles an hour of the galaxy we call the milky way....... I’m so glad I’m came back to this
Is it just me or Eric Idle looks like the 3rd Doctor here???
Lily Beilschmidt that’s funny I thought he looked more live 5
One of the best ever
That's why Eric is my favourite from Monty Python^
What's up with this Doctor Who clip on the Monty Python channel?
Now that you mention it... Eric Idle DOES look a bit like Peter Davisons 5th Doctor
Funny cause I've just seen their latest show "Monty Python Live (Mostly)" and there was also Doctor Who reference.
D r . Manhattan The Retardis was hilarious.

David Tennant always reminded me of Eric Idle for some reason.
Love you, Terry J. It would be nice to think you now have the opportunity to go for a wander around the Cosmos.

Love Monty Python stuff!
Best song ever on the Monty python

The greatest Python song ever...this ridiculously intelligent song is one of the reasons I'm one of those oddballs whose favorite Python film is MEANING OF LIFE
God Bless Monty Python
Classic! R. I. P. Terry Jones... 'He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!'
THANK YOU
What a great film. I am amazed.
I’d like to see an updated version of this that corrects the scientific inaccuracies of the original song.
“The galaxy contains up to 500 billion stars, its 200,000 light-years side-to-side”
etc.
There was an updated version with Eric Idle and Brian Cox, I’ve been looking for it for ages but haven’t found it.

This song is my favorite part in the whole movie.
No it isn't.

Nothing can cheer you up faster than Eric Idle coming out of your fridge in a pink tux and singing :)

I can't tell if this is supposed to make me feel insignificant or make me feel good to be alive
Its supposed to make you feel better by showing you how insignificant your problems are. Thats whats it about in the context atleast. Try to find the organ donor sketch from their movie meaning of life. Its the prequel to this song.
David Copithorne The key line is 'how amazingly unlikely is your birth'. The sheer fact of your existence is a massive plus. In addition, I'm not living in the middle of a civil war, or suffering an incurable disease. Things could be worse.
