It's been 20 years and I still love this music. I was just a kid when I first played X-Com and it's still one of my all-time favorite games. The remake was pretty freaking good too.
***** Xenonauts just doesn't have the same awesomeness as the original Xcom... :( Nothing released after the original Xcom ever managed to out do it, the closest being the original sequel TFTD... XD
***** U have the point I can agree, but nevertheless, dude. Xenonauts is the CLOSEST thing to the original X-COM. Extraterrestrials was good, bu nah-so-so... Firaxis X-COM (2012) is complete trash
The moment when you realise that you're battling against the ETHEREALS!!! The moment when you realise that at any moment your own teammates might turn on you... Oh the horror! ;)
TERROR mission.... Good gods, looks like it might have to be a night mission too. Can I stretch..... it? maybe? Third approach? Morning light? Please....? Not sure if this was passed onto you yet, but yes it is. The Enemy Unknown team brought back the composer of this game to remix and update the original tracks. :)
I wonder what's down in the comments... Oh, right. "Old games were much better, what happened to games, blah blah". Getting real tired of seeing this type of comment. I love my old games and my new games. The new X-Com was praised even by the original's creator, Jullian Gollop. I just finished X-Com Ufo defense, and am going to play though XCOM Enemy Uknown. Why? Because they're BOTH great games.
11 years later, in an industry infested with DEI, this aged somewhat poorly... but not that poorly, because the retro games from 11 years ago are fondly remembered today.
I'm playing the game through the Open XCOM mod/port on Windows 10, with the base game taken from the Steam release. It sounds a bit different, but I love it anyways. Love this theme, they did great work. Edit: That would be because of the audio format the game is using, Adlib.
If you are willing to go down a small rabbit hole, you can download a program called "VirtualMidiSynth" which will allow you to load a custom soundfont, then you can change the music sounds to whatever tickles your fancy. I recorded this in DOS using an old XP laptop to capture the sound, but if you like the way this plays, you can find a soundfont called "AweROMGM.sf2" that will get you, like, 99% of the way there. But there are awesome options to choose from, and a lot of work went into making some amazing soundfonts.
@Lobot0r I don't know if the card I have is going to do a good job of recording SB16 stuff. I imagine that since it is newer and compatible then it should sound the same. If I can get some free time, I will record it and upload it for you.
@adamowsky81 It's funny, when you think about it. Way back in the days of DOS, it was all about the sound card. SB16 was popular but then SB AWE32 hit the market and offered additional RAM for the sound card to use. A sound card that takes RAM? And additional hardware to make it better. (WaveTable attachment) Then we pushed into Windows, dropped MIDI, and pushed better video. And now its "Who got the shiniest graphics" with a video card stronger than my second computer.
I have! I've been keeping an eye on it for several years planning to pick it up on a sale sometime. I haven't gotten it yet because, though it may be very faithful to XCOM mechanics, it's on faithful to the XCOM aesthetics. I really enjoy every little detail about XCOM, and playing the same game but without sectopods, laser rifles, and Skyrangers just wouldn't do it for me. Actually, as I'm writing this I checked and it's on sale for 75% off, so I'm picking it up. Thanks!
Hey, have you ever seen the alpha/beta gameplay of the remake? It had Action Point based movement and firing, and a lot of stuff from the original. It seems like they wanted it to be more like the original at first.
Never played this one. TFTD was my first and only X-COM to date but the entire series is my favorite game series of all time. Looking forward to October when EU comes out so that I can get kicking some Ethereal rear end!... If they have them that is...

then a floater shoot your men with a plasma pistol one time and they still die anyway. it's sad that they fixed that on TFTD but ramped the difficulty so much it was in fact worse then in EU =/

I like how the menu theme for XCOM Enemy Unknown is a call back to this
Developers really liked the Original and you feel that while playing the Reboot and its Sequel
thanks for uploading this--finally a recording of the original geoscape music from the game.
Listening to this in 2021....👀
2024
Countless hours of listening to this over the top of Radiohead - OK Computer... bliss
Still the best soundtrack ever made. I wish there was an easy way to put it in the remake!
Up there with Bastion soundtrack
Probably the best game ever! I still play this using DosBox. Hope they remake this just as it was :)
Try Xenonauts

No that's TFTD, it's the closest thing to the original... :P
Try openxcom, is way better than playing on dosbox
@Cipher76 My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it! :)
This is the version I always hear. I USE THE DOS VERSION THRU DOSBOX BECAUSE MAC OS X.
That's wonderful.
Glad you enjoy it! ^_^
Put this on my loop and now I have ambient music for work. Thanks!
OMG... where are those aliens... interceptors deployed... o da!
Thanks... sooooooooooooooo much!

Tumbs up if your looking forward to X-Com : Enemy Unknown! =D
I think they remade this in XCOM 2. Stage One on the ost.
Thank's for uploading this. :)
The one dislike was from a sectoid XD
And behind that sectoid was that string pulling ethereal that went REEEEEEEEE! :P
@@Izzoroth
Oh please, Ethereals are too evolved to use something as basic as "REEEEEEEEE" :P
@@PerfectAlibi1 Until they panic, that is.

@@KopperNeomanJust don't play AAA? I don't really see a lot of the DEI stuff I've heard so much about.

We need somebody to upload a vid just playing this on a piano all the way through.
could you do the soundtrack from terror from the deep i love all that mix of retro 50's sci-fi music with that touch of eerieness

I read that Firaxis is brining back the original composer for the remake. Good call.
XCOM was a very good remake but I would like to see a more faithful recreating.
Ever heard of Xenonauts? It's almost exactly like the old X-COM but with the very tedious stuff fixed and much better air combat

@adamowsky81 Warcraft, StarCraft, Halo, WoW, Jedi of Old Republic, Jedi Knight, Batman: arkham asylum ... happened! For me anyway! =>
5 more days, ladies.
Darn, time flies. Hope you enjoyed the new ones.
Has anyone realized that the bass line for Billie Jean is almost identical to this?
Exactly what I was thinking!
I've uploaded a general SB version that SB16 users are supposed to use -- let me know if it sounds anything like the genuine thing. :)

sounds like John Carpenter

@adamowsky81 StarCraft!
The new Geoscape music is awful.
