Stephen Bunting do you ever use a larger tarp at all? I use a 10 X 8 1/2 foot tarp would love to see your technique with something like that. This was by far the best video on ground dwelling tarp setups for beginners that I have found, by the way.
Olympic Outdoors Dad No I've never needed anything bigger. Where I camp it's usually wind protection I need so 'roof type' set ups like the A frame are no good for me. 9x5 is perfect for solo use for the odd night. Bigger tarp would be great for longer trips.

Lots of great ideas, well presented. At the end, for max protection, nothing beats the simple ridge tent shape, with the tarp folded along its length to form the ridge, pole about half the size as shown, at each end. You crawl in from one end, it's about the size of a one man bivvi, and with the tarp to the ground on each side and your pack at one end, it will keep out even the harshest of weathers.
Thanks. The attraction for me with tarping is the exposure and open views so I tend to prefer the more open configurations. If I know the weather will be poor, I will usually take a tent :-)
sdb101 for a lot of my time in the field during 9 years in the army I was dismounted (no vehicles), so we had what we could carry, which was a tarp (poncho as we called it). Most times though, it only went up if the weather looked like it was going to be really wet otherwise we made do with a foam roll mat and sleeping bag in a goretex bivvi bag and slept in the open.
I think you mean A-frame. And yeah, that is a glaring omission in this video.

I love this video, but I am not a "yard man". The yard is where the kids go and the dogs poop. I would like to see some of these configurations put up in driving sleet on the top of a mountain in moderate to high wind on rocky terrain. Still, very well done and informative video.

I’m guessing you must camp at low altitude out of the wind or in forests. I tend to camp up high and it’s the wind I’m looking to shelter from so the first tarp set up is one I use the least. I’m looking at doing more forest camping though so that might change. Happy camping 👍

Simple, but strong and useful designs. In the 197Os.I lived in the woods for 3 months each summer, with a poncho that size, used as a tarp at night. My favorite pitch was in the lee of a big fallen log, with the log for an upwind wall, and brush walls.

nice and easy setups, thanks for sharing them with us, as a tip to tension the tent evenly at the back and gain more space inside, you could put 2 braces with the same pole and anchor it in a single point, a really like you put them together in a single video, you got my suscription and support, good luck with your projects bro.

Thanks for the demonstration. I have used a 9x9 so far and am thinking about going with a smaller tarp. However I fear I might be less protected from the weather. I like a setup that is flexible so my favourite is the cave because I think one might be able to raise one side (where your head is) with a stick or by tying it to a tree and once the weather changes to the worse you just stake that side down to the ground. I might give that a try. Thanks again and best wishes.
Thanks for the comment. The cave is much better with a bigger tarp like yours. I usually camp above the tree line at altitude and so the weather is invariably coming from one direction. Ive camped in some wild weather using just the ‘lean to’ and ‘flying V’ and they have given plenty of protection. Having said that, if I know the weather is going to be poor I will take a tent. Tarps are best when you can appreciate the views and exposure.

Brilliant. Thanks for the link. Looking forward to saving some weight on wild camps with my dog. Bit unsure about our everlasting midge season up here though! I've got a headnet and lots of sprays so should be able to fight them off.
Joanna Forbes Ah yes the wee Scots Midge. Evil little blighters. If you camp high enough you might be OK? The only other solution is to use a bivvy bag with a sewn in head net. I use an mld superlight. It’s better than being bitten but it takes the fun out of tarping IMHO. Spraying the tarp and sleeping bag with this stuff before you go can also help sawyer.com/products/permethrin-insect-repellent-treatment/

As a year round Tarp user i'm still pondering the best way to combat "bug/midge season" ,with out the weight creeping up to that of a tent ? Assuming the use of a bivy bag is a given in the UK,would you just use a head net....or go full bug bivy as well ?Or use a bigger tarp,keep the bug bivy and ditch the bivy bag ? Choices eh...that's what Tarps are for...😉
67Dinosaurus yeh midges are a bitch. I have the mld superlight bivy with head net. mountainlaureldesigns.com/product/mld-superlight-solo-bivy/ It’s not ideal but it works. This is one situation when a tent with full mesh inner would be best 😟 Trailstar with mesh inner is a good compromise.

That MLD looks too claustrophobic for me...
A tent makes sense i'll admit.I have thought about using a bug net with an appropriate sized sheet of lightweight tyvek on stand by to throw over when needed(shaped,with footbox?).....i guess if there was an easy answer to this every one would be doing/using it !😎

I just bought a 9 x 5.5 foot bushcraft tarp and your video will help me a lot. Great job with the video. Your guy lines interest me, can you tell me how thick the cord is you use and how to set it up for quick deployment as you have shown.

In practice, that pole you're using as a lifter will fall to one of its sides, since the tension on it is only in one direction. To stabilize it, you'd need a guy line and two extra stakes.

Great video! Any suggestions if I’ll plan to be camping in a wet area with lots of timber? What are you doing for ground cover? Generic footprint?
Kory B Hi. I use a small flat tyvek groundsheet normally and occasionally a bathtub floor just big enough for the air mat if it’s going to be wet. Flat groundsheet is usually fine though if you pick a spot where water is unlikely to pool.

Sheep have never been a problem. I think my smelly trail shoes are more than enough to deter them. I once woke with a slug on my face though. Does that count ? ;-)

Great video but where’s the A-frame configuration? That’s nearly as common as a lean-to configuration.
Bob Preis where I camp it’s always windy so the A-frame is useless to me. I’ve never used it. I camp mainly on mountain tops in the English Lake District. If it’s ever calm and dry then I just use a bivvy. I like to see the sky when I camp. I don’t like a roof.
sdb101 I thought the A-frame was the best shelter configuration for windy conditions, especially in rain. Maybe I’ve been wrong all along.
Bob Preis the A-frame is essentially a tarp draped over a ridge line with the corners guyed down. It’s open at the sides so offers no wind protection. Unless the tarp is huge and can reach the floor (in which is case you might as well take a tent) or the fabric is so close to your face that it’s like being in a coffin. For me, tarping is about open spaces and big views.

Really nice work. Thank you. Despite all best efforts, water can run downhill or pool on flats or in depressions. How do you keep dry? I've known well seasoned tarp pitchers switch back to tents due to that factor. There doesn't seem to be a fix for that. Any ideas?
Solo Over 50 Thanks for commenting. I won't use a tarp if the forecast is wet. When I do get caught out, in the places I camp it's usually windy so it's easy to pitch against wind blown rain. My air mat is 2 inches thick so a bit of pooled water isn't a problem. I also have a bathtub type ground sheet from Ookworks that I can take if needed. The fun of tarping is in dry weather and clear night skies though so I always check the forecast and will take the trailstar instead if I'm worried.
That makes sense. I have an MSR Hubba Hubba NX so I can use it in tarp mode only or add the tent. Tarp mode also allows for putting the tarp up first in rain and then adding the tent underneath. Either way I take the tent. In Minnesota if there isn't rain, there are the mosquitoes to contend with.
Mosquitoes require you to use either a tent or a mosquito netting, correct?
No, put your clothes on and wear a mesh head-bag or even two. Wearing a peaked hat or cap keeps the mesh away from your face. Insect repellent helps more if your rub some in your hair as that's where the body heat is concentrated. . If it's wet then ensure that your ground sheet is smaller than your tarp footprint as the tarp water will run off. If the ground is impermeable then dig a little trench beneath the drip-line.
Sounds like you should research campsite selection. Andrew Skurka has a good article on his site as does Section Hiker.

All these people and their tarps used in largely unneeded ways.
I don't know what a tarp does foe mosquitoes and blackflies but l am sure it's not effective at all.
A tarp does nothing for insects my friend. Don’t use one if you camp in areas where this is a problem. You can use a bivvy bag with a sewn in head net but it’s no fun. Use a tent with a good mesh inner instead.
