    Me: Hi, I wear a men's size 10.5 in my street shoes.
    REI: That means your climbing shoe size is about a child's size 4 or 3-1/2 if you want an agressive fit.

    Hello! This video is really helpful as I’m about to buy my first pair of climbing shoes. I’ve been climbing for ca 7 years but I’ve never owned a pair of shoes. In the beginning, I didn’t see it necessary as my feet were still growing but I’ve decided that it’s time. I’ve always used my climbing gym’s shoes and I never saw a reason for buying my own as I already had my favorites. About a month ago, my climbing gym had a fast course in leadership for us leaders/instructors. I forgot my socks at home and had to climb without socks. That’s when I realized that I really need to get my own. I’m going to try some in a few days!

    Literally bought the Mythos a few days ago, was surprised to see them show up haha. Loving them so far. The leather is super nice. I do wish they were strap ups but I don't mind the small inconvenience of lacing for how well they fit.

    I was hoping for a more in depth guide from REI. Compared to La Sportiva's recent video series on the subject, this video hardly scratches the surface in what goes into choosing a climbing shoe. Things like climbing style, rock type, foot shape, and shoe volume were completely left out!

      best approach imo is to get a cheap pair, use it for all you do and find out what they're good for and what not so much. where you could need another rubber patch, where they could be tighter, stiffer.... you will learn all you need in the process. did the same thing and right now i use 3 different shoes depending on what i am climbing, although 1 for most of it and 2 specialised ones ;)

      Adam Ondra has a great video breaking down what shoes to use and when. He even goes over sizing.

    If only I could have numerous sizing options in whichever style I deemed right for me, instead, I have to ask for whatever is carried in the ~46 range

    • @IsopodActivities
      @IsopodActivities 4 роки тому +19

      No socks is the right answer since when you have an additional layer that creates more sloppiness in footwork since your foot can slip around inside the shoe more with socks on.

    • @hydra66

      personal preference. no socks in the majority of instances as Jacob's alluded to - it's about eliminating dead space. Socks if rentals (for hygeine) or for crack climbing feet above head so you can tuck your trousers in

      Jacob Nichols I disagree but each to their own. I don’t feel I’ve lost any performance through wearing short sports socks

      use one foot with and one foot without socks.now you have done both sides justice.

    • @c_beno3416

      Easy: you go as you want. Socks on makes your shoes smell less. Also, since there are shoes with thic rubber and other with lesse thic rubber honestly the "you have to feel" argument doesn't works. It's a question of style and culture in the sport, and most importantly of confort. In every other sports, athletes will put socks in there shoes. The loosing performance theory could be right, but it would also be right for basketballer, soccer player, etc. So honestly, just keep doing what you want. I only have had one pair of climibig shoes since I started (Wich doesn't mean what I am saying is less or more valuable, I just state and argue my point), and I started to wear thin sports socks in them because they gotten loose over the time. It works pretty well and I like it.

    • @marshl531
      @marshl531 4 роки тому +3

      try putting on your shoes with a plastic bag over your feet or use a 10*10cm patch/piece of a plastic bag to cover your toes. This helped me a lot for wearing in new shoes. It feels as if the plastic piece helps to slide deeper into the shoes while providing a protective layer for the hotspots. Hope it helps. What's a "sending shoe"? I don't understand. At 2:04. Or did I mishear it?

    • @andrewscott5059
      @andrewscott5059 3 роки тому +1

      A sending shoe means a shoe that is meant to be used for a hard "send" of a route. These shoes normally are more uncomfortable and downturned/asymmetrical than your more all day shoes, making them help you perform that tiny bit better for those short bursts when you need it.
