    Love this series! I just got my first drill press and have been looking at different designs for the table. I think I just found it. This video has just the right amount of detail and I love the dry humor. "Flat bottom drawers make the woodworking world go 'round," "build the exhaust port small enough so a photon torpedo can go up it and lead to catastrophic failure." Awesome!

    The cut-out in the bottom of the fence looks slick. But when the insert is in place, it doesn’t carry dust to the vacuum. For those of us using a free-standing spindle sander, there’s not a need for a drum sander on the drill press.

    • @WoodsmithShowandmagazine
      @WoodsmithShowandmagazine  3 роки тому

      Yeah, there was supposed to be another part to this series that shows various insert designs that will help to utilize the dust collection during normal drilling operations. We got cut short on some of our filming earlier this year with the whole Covid lock-down but hopefully we can get back to that soon. For my home shop I built just the top and fence and skipped the drawer box. That configuration works just fine, as well, if you aren't interested in dust collection.

    Looks really great, just one question as I may be missing something. How does the dust collection work when drilling with a solid insert like that?

  • @iainmcculloch5807
    @iainmcculloch5807 3 роки тому +3

    Absolutely! Only an absolute eejit would make an exhaust port large enough to shoot a photon-torpedo into! ;-)

    I am building this table to replace a simple table that has less options to clamp hold downs on. I chose to go with just one clamping slot on each side as that should be sufficient to clamp anything I will be drilling/machining. One limitation I see with the combination of a drawer and the two inside clamping slots on his version. The inside slots have limited clamp use on the inside edges because the drawer box leaves very little room for a clamp to grab. Minor problem but that is why I chose to go with one slot on each side. I am also skipping the dust collection option in my base/drawer. I prefer to make a simpler box that sits on top of the table and clamps easily to it. Otherwise a very good design and I'm anxious to get it finished.

    Very nice design. I'd like to see a video with the dust collection in action - I find a lot of debris above the work piece and don't see how the dust collection will gather waste at the point where the bit meets the work piece. Cheers, R

      I guess the replaceable insert need not be solid surface. You could drill a honeycomb pattern into one for sanding and such.

    • @WoodsmithShowandmagazine
      @WoodsmithShowandmagazine  3 роки тому +4

      Ian Garthwaite - Correct. In the plans there are several other designs of insert you can make that either have notches or slots to accommodate the dust collection. I intended to shoot more videos with accessories but it has been delayed. I can probably get to that now. 👍

    Very nice ! Where do we get the "hammer" plan ? Will there be a video for adding the worm gear adjustment to this drill press table , or have I just missed it ? I really enjoy the projects videos, whether I think that I will ever use them or not. Mr. Doyle is a very good presenter, I think. Thanks for the videos. Another reason that Woodsmith is my favorite woodworking magazine.

    Does the drawer raise the table up far enough so that the handle to raise and lower the drill press works?

    • @WoodsmithShowandmagazine
      @WoodsmithShowandmagazine  3 роки тому +2

      In my home garage shop, I built this drill press table without the drawer box and there is still plenty of clearance to use the crank handle, but the drawer box does raise it up a little more and gives it even more clearance.

  • @williamellis8993
    @williamellis8993 3 роки тому +2

    I think I missed something. The top of the drawer box looks like it is flush to the bottom of the table. Where did the cavity above the drawer box come from?

    • @WoodsmithShowandmagazine
      @WoodsmithShowandmagazine  3 роки тому +1

      The top is 1 1/2" thick (2 layers of 3/4" plywood) and the replaceable insert is only 1/2" MDF so there is a 1" gap between the bottom of the insert and bottom of the table that forms the cavity to the dust collection in the back of the drawer base.

    The previous Woodsmith plan for a drill press table includes hardware to control table height from the front. Did you skip that because other features were more important for you, or because it didn’t work well?

    • @WoodsmithShowandmagazine
      @WoodsmithShowandmagazine  3 роки тому +2

      No, I really like that crank feature too but it just doesn’t jive with the drawer box in the way on this design. I have all the hardware to build drill press table though so maybe we’ll do a build video for that drill press table too. 👍

    • @davidkenagy8706
      @davidkenagy8706 3 роки тому +1

      The table with the height adjuster in the front (2010) has a narrow, wide “face” that acts as a stiffener extending below the metal surface of the drill press. The hole for the crank is ~2.5” below the bottom of the metal surface. The table in this video series (2019) puts the entire assembly above that metal surface. I think I could change the face of the 2019 table without changing the ‘guts’. That would keep the drawer above the metal table, and the crank below it (like the 2010 table).

    • @WoodsmithShowandmagazine

      David Kenagy - With these 2 drill press tables combined I would have the most ultimate woodworking table in the universe! *evil villain laugh* I think it’s worth a shot. 👍

    9:08 How does the dust collector draw the dust in with the sacrificial plate blocking the flow?

      @WoodsmithShowandmagazine  3 роки тому +1

      Here is a video explaining alternate insert plates: ua-cam.com/video/Hymri13TBok/v-deo.html
      Note: I didn't have the vacuum hooked up for the first drilling operation so I need to re-edit the video but it does actually work pretty well.

    I gotta tell ya, I’m building this and the section in the plans and this video on building the drawer aren’t clear on the measurements at all. I’m using a router table instead of a table saw for the dados and rabbits but if you look at the plans, it’s very unclear. I’m having to try to figure it out as I go along. I was hoping by buying the plans, it’d be right there. Some of the inset breakdown images are very confusing. I can’t even figure out what half of them are trying yo depict. Another thing is I couldn’t figure out if the bottom of the drawer length or width is 11” or 11 3/4”. I got lots of practice swapping out and setting router bits but now I have to start all over again because I guessed wrong. My strong suggestion would be once you make a set of plans, ask a non engineer a lot of questions to if they can figure out what exactly what you’re trying to show because as the plans are now, they aren’t for a simple minded person like me.

    • @stewartkaplan3100
      @stewartkaplan3100 2 роки тому

      I meant 11” or 11 1/4”.

    • @stewartkaplan3100
      @stewartkaplan3100 2 роки тому

      Finished but with a shelf with no drawer because I cut the dados for the divider too short based on how I understood the plans. I can see know I should have measured the drawer slides but I thought the plans would indicate the length. They don’t tell you. After all the time and effort, disappointed.
