I had an alcoholic father who died at the bottom of a bottle. Shortly after, I got sober for 4 years (from drugs too) before re-introducing alcohol into my life. I did so mindfully and continue to do so. There is so much value in abstinence, there are moments that call for a drink. Where the moment is less about the drink and more about the people, the energy, the environment, the view. The alcoholic fixates on the drink, mistaking the Forrest for the Trees. Yes, alcohol is poison and has no medical benefit; however, imbibing can enhance an experience. But you will never know the middle without traveling to both ends of the spectrum. Moderation an allusive word, which, for most, will only become clear to you if quit. Practicing years of temperance is the still the most valuable experience I've had. If you drink and the idea of taking a year off scares you. Do it. Let that fear be a beacon calling you home. If you choose alcohol again, your relationship with it will change for the better.
I resonate a lot with this video. I really enjoy alcohol, from the history, to the creativity, to the community, but I understand the issues the come along with it. From drunk drivers, to abuse, to health issues, there are many negative aspects regarding alcohol. I for one love drinking, and the free spirit feeling that comes with a couple to a few drinks, but absolutely hate getting drunk. But thats why its so important to have people that educate others on how to have healthy relationships with alcohol. I recently have even started to enjoy non-alcoholic beers. Hi Lui! This is a very interesting about an important topic. I'm from Brazil and started drinking like 2 years ago. I like that you made this video, it's important be mindful of how alcohol affects your life and your relationship with it. I love that you keep it honest. I always say that alcohol is to be enjoyed, not abused. I'm drinking for the creativity and flavours of cocktails and spirits, not to get drunk or to self-medicate my emotions. Going to a bar and taking 10 tequila shots is a once or twice a year thing for me and I know my max. I also come from a family that did consume alcohol regularly and have members who did have issues with alcohol abuse and the other side which had one sparking wine at Christmas and that was it. That's why I try to not associate drinking with emotions, life events, parties, or consume it as a daily ritual. It's important for each individual to figure out the healthiest way for them to consume (or not consume) alcohol.
An amazing story and perspective Lui. A couple name suggestions for the beverage that you made, The Cure, The C.S (Conversation Starter), A Good Problem, The Immersion. Whichever one you like the best. You really inspire me to try anf get into the bartending profession. Think of it this way, Drinking is all about having a good time. Have enough to where you are still having a good time, have some water beside you and always have a friend to tell you if you've had to much. Also, can you show the measurments that you used in this drink, and If I can't fnd the Cachaca that you used, can I use the unaged Leblon kind that I love? Keep up the amazing content man. To your health, Cheers.
This is something I’ve been struggling with for a while. I love cocktail culture and making drinks, almost more than I love actually drinking said drinks. I had the same thought about how every single culture stumbled upon alcohol on their own. Mixing cocktails is so fun and it’s something I want to continue to do. Much love and appreciate the work you do!
You have made me reevaluate my relationship with alcohol. I love spirits and I don't drink to get drunk. But I think it's time to consider my overall health.
It's really sad to see, and I'm sure you have seen the absolute depths that some people hit as a result. And it's why I think we need to talk about it more. And make it a larger part of the conversations in our community. Because it doesn't get talked about enough unfortunately
@@Lui_Fern We do need to talk about it more. You are courageous to take this on! I see more lives decimated and often lost from alcohol than any other drug, such as opioids, crack, meth, anything really.
@@christinecamley I can't imagine how tough it must be to see that so often. i think it checks out that it's the one drug that causes the most issues because I think it's so normalized. And that's what's scary and has always caused me anxiety about what I do.
@@Lui_Fern I understand the anxiety Lui! It's actually healthy to have the anxiety! It's when people are super self-assured that nothing bad can happen that I start to get really worried. Sadly I see this trend a lot on alcohol-based UA-cam channels. One host is always drunk, very sad, and he probably shouldn't have a channel. Others call whisky their friend which is worrying. Alcohol is not anyone's friend. Trust me. The cost to the healthcare system alone is astronomical in alcohol-related diseases and with accidents. I applaud you for speaking about a personal connection such as one of your grandpas. My older brother has alcohol-related dementia. It's absolutely okay that you love spirits. Scotch is my hobby. I am just very careful and especially as I have several close family members who have or had a serious alcohol use disorder. You are a really good guy and I think this is a fabulous video! Much care.
You are good, thank you for your kind words! I enjoy the drinking of alcohol for the experience of making a community of people that talk about the tasting's in the spirits that we drink. It is fun that way!
You can't blame a Baker for showing you how to bake a cake and get diabetes so you certainly can't blame a bartender for showing you how to mix cocktails and become an alcy. Love your channel, you've put me and my wife up on so many better liquor alternatives and excellent cocktails, all in moderation. Hope to one day visit your bar!
Thanks for your honesty & frankness, Lui. One of the unfortunate things I've noticed among some fellow agave spirits fans is claiming tequila has "health benefits," perhaps confusingly thinking that agavins, which may have some potential health benefits before distillation, still have them after or that any original health benefits outweigh the alcohol, which, as you said, has no health benefits. Is tequila in moderation better (or less bad) for those with blood sugar issues, for example? Yes. But that's not the same thing as bring "healthy." Everything in moderation. Keep doing what you do!
Really appreciate this video, when i meet someone new and discover they are sober i make sure to let them know they dont have to justify their sobriety to me or anyone. also for the cocktail name an oxymoron could be fun i.e. Velvet Revolver (this cocktail name is already taken) but the idea of a smooth and luxurious adjective for the bourbon, honey and coffee notes with a hard hitting, sharp noun representing the amburana spice in the colibri
Ey Lui wonder if you have any thoughts on aguasol tequila me and my wife got a bottle of their reposado this weekend and it was one of the best tequilas we tried. Cheers!!
Love this discussion, thank you for making this video. For the name of this cocktail, you could call it the Amazon River cause there was a lot of water in it. Or, The Contusion cause it was pretty bruised. Wink wink.
Nice video and necessary Topic. About the name of the cocktail, when you started pouring the ingredients I thought It was a Revolver variation, than you mentioned it. So If It is a Revolver with Brazilian elements, maybe call It Taurus (weapons manufacturer from BR)
First off great video you made some really fantastic points and Just to add-on if you drink daily or heavy i would look into the side effects that can happen from stopping suddenly alot of people die from quitting to abruptly seek a medical advice from your doctor and im not a doctor myself but i saw a video that if you drink alot and can stop but you want to safely you have to taper off your alcohol % and amount slowly for example if you drink whiskey slowly switch to beers because the alcohol % is lower if you drink say 4+ beers try only having 3 and taper to nothing even though tapering is safer then quitting cold turkey when you have been drinking alot for years you still should have a medical professional to seek advice or give encouragement because its not just the stopping drinking thats the hard part its the mental battle of why you got into a toxic relationship with alcohol in the first place that makes it hard for people to stop to begin with when they feel they lost control much love to all of you if your struggleing you dont have to do it alone there are lots of people who have felt defeated in there addiction so dont make yourself feel bad for it just be honest with yourself an loving if you are thinking about quitting i believe in you and im proud of you you can do it
I am kinda going through a phase where i need to have a drink every other night to play the guitar or read and I am not getting drunk or what not but its being over reliant on the drink. I realize I have a prolmblem and I believe I can overcome !
Wonderful video, good for all of us to think about this and be observant and unafraid to point out trepidations we might have related to this issue in our friends and family. A name for the drink? A sunny Chaffeebon? Sunny = orange bitters +peel ca-CHA-ca co-FFEE bour-BON Silly I know but so is alcohol sometimes as well as the people drinking it ;)
Bro, I miss the flavors from the cocktails I enjoyed the most when I used to drink. I miss those frothy and creamy Ramos gin fizz, and the refreshing taste of a whiskey sour with freshly squeezed lemon and egg whites. But ever since I stopped drinking 5 years ago, I never felt healthier and more alive and productive in life. I think I’ll keep it this way. Cheers.
bad for your liver, i quess it really matters how much you drink, and how often. i like drinking when i watch football, monday thru friday since im a electrician at work, i dont drink. on vactions i drink but your right it is a poision. thanks for that .
Excellent venture into a somewhat 'taboo' subject - questioning alcohol use. The whole bar thing, where we drink and then drive, is odd. Most folks probably think this is just 'the way it is'. 2-3 IPAs, wines or drinks is way too much to drive safely, yet we do it. A bit of a paradox. Glad you brought it up.
A nice video on a possibly sensitive subject. On the cocktail name, hopefully google translate was correct "Girando" in Portuguese means rotating. A revolver rotates and so can the wings of a hummingbird ( Colibri, the name of the Cachaça)
I think, don't be so hard on yourself. You don't make anyone choose to drink too much. Also Jesus kept the party going at a wedding by creating more wine. It can absolutely be used for gatherings and good times. Some of my favorite memories with a friend is us drinking mexican mules in the basement while watching movies. I don't get drunk, but I surely enjoy a good cocktail and beer.
I drink and smoke cigars. I have some alcoholics in my family. But I do enjoy the relaxing effects it gives me. I try to keep my drinking in moderation but on rare occasions I admit I do drink more than I intended to.
A good topic to mention and address with others and yourself often. I will say I didn’t follow the argument for friends and ceremonial aspects as much in this content. Bottomline, some alcohol, a lot actually, just taste good. Ice cream and sugar is poison of another kind, which is why you shouldn’t abuse that either. Is having a small bowl of ice cream several times a week bad? For you to decide just like alcohol
You are responsible for making me drink more... Cachaça, and I thank you for it! I would most likely not have heard of this spirit if you didn't make your videos. Don't worry, you are not responsible for making me drink more generally. I have started drinking a bit more since I started making cocktails and videos a few years back, but I don't feel 3-4 cocktails per week is any kind of problem. As it happens, my latest acquisition is Novo Fogo Colibri so I will absolutely try this cocktail at some point. A suggestion for the drink name: Black Hummingbird (mr black... colibri...) 😀
After i had my first serious hangover (puking, shaking, thinking im gonna die, so bad i had an ambulance drive me to the hospital, threw up a ton on the ride, all I needed according to the laughing workers at hospital was iv to hydrate me plus some medicine for the nausea) after that i was like "o yea this is poison" But since then I only drink to enjoy taste..i don't even like getting drunk really. I always stop way before then. Very cautious. And i thank God im not addicted cause I love to drink, even if just a dram on most nights
This was my exact experience. Got way too drunk one time, now I just drink what I like the taste of. But, I also love trying many different types of beer and other alcohol.
Good spirits, wine, and beer, just taste good when its good quality. I don't think it's fair not to call whiskey or mezcal tasting a hobby with all the care and love that traditionally goes into a well made beverage be it a mixed drink, neat spirit, brewed wine or beer. I like what I like and that's a ongoing struggle day to day I do my best to mediate and moderate. Being said I still appreciate you for opening me up mentally to what real agave spirits should be. I probably can't afford to drink Cazcanes and Rey Campero regularly but my goodness these are nice treats. I definitely wanna try more agave spirits and I just recently learned Denver has a famous Mezcal bar I gotta go see. Support the owners if nothing else 😊 Honestly thank you for helping me branch out!
When I was ten years old, there was a Thanksgiving dinner where my aunt said that she loved the way that whiskey made her feel, but she hated the way it burned. I replied, “That’s the opposite of how I feel about whiskey.” The entire family turned to me and said in unison, “What does a ten year old child know about whiskey?” I replied, “I love the way it burns, but I hate the way it makes me feel.”
Well here is what I know. As a child I lived in a mill workers area. Bars opened at 6am for night shift workers. Being in bars my whole life I was around old retired guys who were fine in health drinkingvevery day. Not to get drunk but having a few and socializing. Many of them at some point due to family and not health were forced to stop drinking and smoking and visiting the bar they grew to know as well as friends. Within a year or two these men had died.
people who watch these videos already drink, so why not have a place we can go to get knowledge on what's good and what's not? If not for Lui I would probably never tasted some of the best tequilas I've tasted so far. Because of your videos I didn't get ripped off by buying a $200 bottle of trash and got a $45 bottle of superior El Tesoro. Keep up the good work bro
You don't influence me to drink more... I do that all by myself. Just like listening to rock/rap/{insert the evil genre of whatever time you're reading this} and growing up playing D&D didn't make me a felon or some kind of spawn of Satan (lol). Some folks are weird, and lay blame for their issues at everybody, and anything, but themselves. Be respectful, be responsible, and be realistic... and go live a fulfilling life, with or without alcohol. I choose alcohol, in moderation... and appreciate your content while doing so.
When you're a bartender alcohol is just a work tool. When you're at home you can do whatever you want but when customers come to a bar they expect to be welcomed by a sober professional not a drunk mess.
My son has been bartending 4-5 years and while he tastes liquor & liqueurs at work, he doesn't keep any at home/doesn't drink otherwise & he ABHORS drunks.
Dude! What brought this on?!! There are some simple solutions for alcoholism. One is only sip Fortaleza. First you have to find it, which will cut your drinking way down, The next is the cost when you can find it. And third is pour an ounce and taste it over and over again. That will take you about an hour or so per ounce because IT'S SO DAMN GOOD! You''ll never suffer from the compulsion to shoot it then bite a lime like you used to do with Cuervo Gold back in high school and collage. Just a thought.
A statement of “it’s all terrible for you” is ignorant. Wine and whiskey have health benefits (antioxidants) but the key is moderation. You did touch on the second point. From ChatGPT: Alcohol in moderation is generally considered acceptable for most adults and may even have some potential health benefits. However, the effects of alcohol can vary widely depending on individual factors such as genetics, existing health conditions, and lifestyle. Here are some key points to consider: Potential Benefits of Moderate Alcohol Consumption 1. Cardiovascular Health: Some studies suggest that moderate alcohol consumption, particularly of red wine, may be associated with a reduced risk of heart disease due to the presence of antioxidants like resveratrol. 2. Social and Psychological Effects: Moderate alcohol consumption in social settings can enhance social bonding and relaxation.
An oversimplification perhaps. What you described are more side effects. Alcohol at its base in and of itself is not good for you, it's just that at certain levels it's not specifically harmful to you either. It's a neutral substance that your body can chemically manage...to a point.
@@katzsteel lol okay. I believe it's all terrible for you. If that makes me ignorant in your narrow mind, sure. You win this imaginary internet argument! +1 imaginary points for you!!
@@Lui_Fern Not imaginary! Are you ok? In another dimension? Just as grape juice has benefits so does wine. Whisky has more antioxidants. Just don’t drink a ton. You do you though. You’re right though I win! 😂
I didn't have to make any statement to be honest. These have just been my thoughts over the past few years and wanted to open up about them. I often times find myself not sharing enough of my personality on here and this is something I really found important to talk about and I think more people should think about.
@@Lui_Fern So I moved to my house 3 years ago and the bar was there in my basement. So I bought my stools and started watching these videos for 3 years and nobody has brought up the issue. It is cool you are talking about it. I have been drinking more these last 3 years. but I think I keep it moderate as needed. I do dry January every year without any issues. Time will tell I suppose.
The fact that you have to make a video to explain this to people is why society is the way it is right now. But those same people have 20 guns and rocket launchers in their home talking about "moderation"

I totally agree on what you said about it can be a career. Just need to know how to control the life style. I love your videos.
Thanks, bro. Great video and vibes.
Thanks my friend! Happy you enjoyed this one 😁 I was worried folks might think it was borig.
Thank you so much my friend! I'm happy this resonated with you. It was something that's been on my mind for a while.
You have made me reevaluate my relationship with alcohol. I love spirits and I don't drink to get drunk. But I think it's time to consider my overall health.
Thanks Lui. Not boring. It is actually true and we should never run from the truth.
It is. Moderation. As a clinical psychologist I see people all the time diagnosed with an alcohol use disorder.
I enjoy the mixology, the craft, the spirits, the cocktail and bartending history.
Great discussion and appreciate you sharing. Slippery slope, but for some of us (myself included) well worth it. More mezcal cocktails!
Sunny = orange bitters +peel
ca-CHA-ca
co-FFEE
bour-BON
Silly I know but so is alcohol sometimes as well as the people drinking it ;)
Bro, I miss the flavors from the cocktails I enjoyed the most when I used to drink. Cheers.
Great message. As a pistola cocktail already exists my nomination is o potro
bad for your liver, i quess it really matters how much you drink, and how often. i like drinking when i watch football, monday thru friday since im a electrician at work, i dont drink. on vactions i drink but your right it is a poision. thanks for that .
Yeah that's a really great point. It's another thing we have to contend with daily.
Great video! I think more cocktail content creators should make more vidoes like this. 👍
"Pistoleiro". Simple riff on the revolver name. Idk.
Thank you for the suggestion! And I'm happy you enjoyed the video 😁
Great video on a difficult subject. How about The Obregón for the cocktail name?
Like your words & alcohol same at all... Cheers
After i had my first serious hangover (puking, shaking, thinking im gonna die, so bad i had an ambulance drive me to the hospital, threw up a ton on the ride, all I needed according to the laughing workers at hospital was iv to hydrate me plus some medicine for the nausea) after that i was like "o yea this is poison"
But since then I only drink to enjoy taste..i don't even like getting drunk really. I always stop way before then. Very cautious. And i thank God im not addicted cause I love to drink, even if just a dram on most nights
This was my exact experience. Got way too drunk one time, now I just drink what I like the taste of. But, I also love trying many different types of beer and other alcohol.
Everything in moderation, including moderation. 😊
You do well. We can't blame others for our bad habits. Keep mixing, bruh. There times I'll have 2-3 cocktails a day, and I'll go weeks with drinking 🍸
Support the owners if nothing else 😊
Honestly thank you for helping me branch out!
I'm looking forward to visiting your restaurant in a few weeks and having some good tequila at your bar!
Thanks friend! It'll be my honor to host you 😁
When I was ten years old, there was a Thanksgiving dinner where my aunt said that she loved the way that whiskey made her feel, but she hated the way it burned. I replied,
“That’s the opposite of how I feel about whiskey.” The entire family turned to me and said in unison,
“What does a ten year old child know about whiskey?” I replied,
“I love the way it burns, but I hate the way it makes me feel.”
Dont be sorry for showing your passion for your profession and your love of world culture, its why we watch.
Good point. People forget the positive social effects of drinking
people who watch these videos already drink, so why not have a place we can go to get knowledge on what's good and what's not?
I choose alcohol, in moderation... and appreciate your content while doing so.
name the drink "tiro de esquina"... tiro as a riff on revolver and the soccer reference... well just because...
For the same price would you rather buy fortaleza repo or Cazcanes rosa blanco?
Alcohol brings people together and at the same time it separates many
I think in honor of this episode the cocktail's name should be "in moderation"
Listen.. We are all adults and understand the dangers of alcohol. The consumption and management of Alcohol is in each one of us.
I agree that it's on each of us, and you're right... To a point. But influence can't be ignored. And a lot of people don't understand the dangers.
When you're a bartender alcohol is just a work tool. When you're at home you can do whatever you want but when customers come to a bar they expect to be welcomed by a sober professional not a drunk mess.
"Dont do it" or "One more" depending on your outlook for the name
My son has been bartending 4-5 years and while he tastes liquor & liqueurs at work, he doesn't keep any at home/doesn't drink otherwise & he ABHORS drunks.
Could also call it " legal drug" since essentially a bartender is a legal dealer.
I like it, it’s really tasty. Lol. Perfect sign off. 👍
Covering this topic as an insider is admirable. Nobody really does. I'd call it The 1st Amendment given the current events in Brazil : )
Thank you my friend! I appreciate the kind words 😁
I love Alcohol 🍸 yuengling beer good tequila with moderation once a month❤❤❤...
Its Strange how society now Frowns upon Cigarettes but is ok with POT SMOKING...WHICH SHRINKS YOUR BRAIN..😅
A statement of “it’s all terrible for you” is ignorant. Wine and whiskey have health benefits (antioxidants) but the key is moderation. You did touch on the second point. From ChatGPT:
Alcohol in moderation is generally considered acceptable for most adults and may even have some potential health benefits. However, the effects of alcohol can vary widely depending on individual factors such as genetics, existing health conditions, and lifestyle. Here are some key points to consider:
Potential Benefits of Moderate Alcohol Consumption
What I said was I don't believe in it. You can certainly believe what you want about health benefits to alcohol.
An oversimplification perhaps. What you described are more side effects. Alcohol at its base in and of itself is not good for you, it's just that at certain levels it's not specifically harmful to you either. It's a neutral substance that your body can chemically manage...to a point.
@@Lui_Fern No, you actually said, “it’s all terrible for you”, which is an ignorant statement.
Since it is a Revolver riff... Pistolero
what you do is inspiring and should be viewed as a highly nuanced culinary artform rather than a means to get drunk and f'ed up.
Thanks my friend! Those are some very kind words. I really appreciate that
Absolutely wild you even have to make this statement in the first place.
I didn't have to make any statement to be honest. These have just been my thoughts over the past few years and wanted to open up about them. I often times find myself not sharing enough of my personality on here and this is something I really found important to talk about and I think more people should think about.
Awareness.
I got into tequila thanks to you!
Too much of anything can kill you. Drinking too much water or eating too much carrots. It is all about moderation.
you touched the third rail
I'm sorry, what does that mean?
@@Lui_Fern So I moved to my house 3 years ago and the bar was there in my basement. So I bought my stools and started watching these videos for 3 years and nobody has brought up the issue. It is cool you are talking about it. I have been drinking more these last 3 years. but I think I keep it moderate as needed. I do dry January every year without any issues.
Time will tell I suppose.
@@nickmonts ahh I see. Self awareness I think is the most important aspect of it.
The fact that you have to make a video to explain this to people is why society is the way it is right now.
But those same people have 20 guns and rocket launchers in their home talking about "moderation"
You should name the drink Poison just saying
Mmmmmm poison 🤤🤤🤤
Voce um cachaceiro lol😂😂😂
🥲🥲
@@Lui_Fernno more than me lol😂
The fact is yes its bad but a lot of thing in life are bad and sometimes reducing the stresses of life with a good drink can have mental benefits.
I prefer to say that it's just not good for you. There is a middle ground before bad lol.
Snow flake…. Working is also bad for your health but men do it!!!!
