  • Country legend Charlie Daniels died the morning of July 6, 2020, at the age of 83, after a hemorrhagic stroke. In a new blog post on his father's website, Charlie Daniels Jr. shares his father's final hours, and explains that a medication he was taking likely contributed to his death.

Daniels Jr. calls the week of his dad's death an "emotional roller coaster" and "overwhelming." At 5:45AM on July 6, Daniels Jr.'s mother, Daniels' wife Hazel, called her son in tears "and said that I needed to get up to their house right now, that Dad was sick." Daniels Jr. worried that his father had somehow caught the novel coronavirus, but when he arrived at their home, he "found Mom and Dad on the upstairs porch and Dad was slumped over in his chair."
"I asked him if he could breathe, he nodded and tried to say yes, but it was obvious that he was very weak," Daniels Jr. explains. He called 911 while his mom called Daniels' cardiologist, who suggested that Daniels was having a stroke.
After EMTs loaded Daniels into an ambulance and took him to a local hospital, Daniels Jr. and Daniels' longtime manager, David Corlew, raced there, while Hazel stayed at home.
"[A doctor told us] it wasn’t good," Daniels Jr. explains. "He told us that dad had a massive stroke and ... wasn't clotting" because he was taking a blood thinner. Daniels had been prescribed the medication following a 2010 stroke.
"It probably kept him from having another stroke for 10 years, that and his pacemaker, and in December of 2018, he had cardiac catheter ablation surgery to improve his heart rhythm, which increased his energy even more," Daniels Jr. writes. "But unfortunately, the blood thinner is what did him in this time. Because his blood wasn’t clotting, the blood kept pouring into his brain stem."
Doctors tried to reverse the blood thinner's effects and stop the bleeding, "[b]ut by the time the meds kicked in, they weren't getting any brain activity," Daniels Jr. says.

I was to young to go to his concerts before he died but now at 16 always remember him. I’ve played his songs for school performances and no other songs get quite the same rise to the crowd. Truly a guitar, fiddle and country music legend.

This is such a tragic event. In 1990, I went with friends to the yearly Lake Perris California Festival & heard music coming from somewhere. We tracked it down & saw Charlie Daniels & his band on stage singing "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." First time I'd ever seen him live. Bill Medley came onstage with him & sang a duet. Great night. He had an amazing stage presence I'll never forget. RIP Charlie Daniels. You'll be sorely missed.

The reason Charlie Daniels passed away is because of his blood thinner. If Daniels wasn’t on his blood thinner, he would’ve gotten well enough to be released from the hospital and would’ve still been in good health. However, God called Daniels home and I’m glad he was a believer in Jesus. We miss you Charlie Daniels, and we’ll never forget you. You were a true AMERICAN patriot!

I saw CDB at Alpine Valley here in Wisconsin in 1979 or 1980. It was my first concert ever and it was amazing! He was an entertainer from the word go! Juice Newton opened for him and he was so nice to her, being a newcomer at that time. He had her do an encore and then he sang a duet with her before she left the stage. Wish I could remember the song they sang. It was his Full Moon Tour and I had a blast with my husband in the future and a very dear friend whom I haven’t seen in a long long time. RIP Charlie. Your legend will live on for all time. My heart goes out to your family. The pain will soften eventually, always remember the good memories, talk about him every day, and tell his stories. Love and prayers to your family Charlie, help them to celebrate your life and celebrate with great joyfulness his journey with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Medications that are used in an attempt to manage blood clotting have to be closely monitored on a regular basis. Weekly for some people. Even more often when they are first gong on such mediations. Something caused Charlie's levels to go wacky. So sad. He did live a good life but it was not long enough for those who loved him.

I been listening to CDB since I was 14. He even answered my fan mail, signed by him personally. I think Charlie was tired as well of all the crap going on, thanks to the libs and their wolves- but I know he's in heaven based on his testimonies. I miss him already. My favorite songs are " sure beats picking cotton" Ain't no law in california" Wooley swamp" "Take me to the Wild side" Simple Man. Across the line" Same ole me" This fella was the greatest.. RIP same ole me!!

I have a good idea it was Xarelto. I was prescribed it after a heart attack but it just made me nervous. There is no antidote and you just have to wait 48 hours for it to wear off. I switched to Coumadin. It's more of a pain to monitor but it has an antidote and you can stop a bleed.

That's hysterical. Jews for Jesus. Good thing a lot of Americans got there Religion yet the tRump CULT isn't based on Christianity. That's why his daughter turned Jewish so easily. Hypocrites. Daniels was great on the fiddle yet he was delusional in his perspective in politics.
He was logical in the 70s when Daniels was an early supporter of Jimmy Carter's presidential
bid and performed at his January 1977 inauguration.
