Merle Haggard was the first concert we saw as a married couple back in the late 80’s. We were privileged to see Charlie Daniels last year before he died. God bless America. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I met Charlie several years ago...what a humble, engaging, down-to-earth guy...I'll cherish that moment forever. Godspeed, Charlie...RIP. Long live the CDB!
Miss Chucky D!! A man of the people....for sure! No one better to eulogize the absolute BEST COUNTRY MUSIC artist of ALL TIME!!.... Mr. MERLE Haggard!!
Thank you Charlie Daniels for that great inspiring interview. Everything you said about the great Merle Haggard is so right and its wonderful to hear a star like you speaking about him.

Well, my heart is broken.. but i am so thankful to have had his influence over my life all these decades. I want to say what a wonderful family you all are. i can't tell you how heartwarming and inviting both the facebook page and the website have been for all of us. How he shared his family and touching times with us, and his wonderful sense of humor.. his poetic vision, his hopes and dreams.. he dove into the world heart first .. with such courage and vigor -- and that reckless free spirit of his. But the thing is, he loved people so much that we were able to be a part of his journey..he shared his adventures with us in a way nobody else ever has -- from a panoramic view common folks would otherwise never have had a glimpse of. I've had front row seats to this amazing Merle World all these decades. I can't help but feel him even closer now in some ways.. being part of his incredible life makes it possible myself, to live fully in every meaningful moment he would have captured and made masterpiece of..
Merle, you were my daddy's favorite. So many songs I remember singing with him when I was a little girl. Mama Tried, Silver Wings, Bottle Let Me Down....I could go on and on.......RIP. I will miss you.

+Ato Cox Hey, who can blame you for not listening to country nowadays, hell, it's nothing like country should be, or what it was just a few years ago. When you hear something great like Merle, Buck, Faron, Johnny, or Marty, you ask yourself, "What the hell has happened to my kind of music?" Sadly, it'll never be as good, (hell, as tolerable) as it used to be. I think the only two left are Loretta Lynn, and Charlie Pride. My head is hanging low, I will miss them all.
+Mightymikespest Hosspeker, the last country music song I recall hearing was "Murder on Music Row" by George Strait and Alan Jackson. Don't listen to what's called country music these days. The only stations I'll listen to are the ones that play classic country.
Mr. Haggard definitely was the one, WHO started telling the record executives to kiss his ass, then about a few years later, willie and Waylon, the original outlaws, came along!!! God rest his soul!
So sad at the passing of one of the greatest country singers of all time Merle Haggard. Loved his voice and the heart felt songs he wrote and Sang. Touched the deepest part of a person 's heart and soul. There never will be another Merle. RIP you wonderful gentleman.
Charlie Daniels speaks very well about the legacy of Merle Haggard. In my view, Haggard is the best in country music for his combination of powerful, soulful voice, songwriting and styling of the music he performed. His canon--songs he wrote, co-wrote or brought to life when given a composition from someone else--exceeds anyone else's, though I'm sure there will be arguments in favor of a few other CW artists. He is the king of country and probably always will be.
the inspirations he sparked on -- he made into such simplistic word- melody pictures, so we could all really get it. What pure expression of natures best treasures he unearthed... i'm just driftwood.. driftin like the winds that blow across the sky. i won't always be here with you.. i'm just driftwood driftin by. He saw amber waves of grain.. he danced the American waltz.. while "a horse made of iron that could outrun the wind rolled into the next century/ the tracks turned to roads -- the crude oil flowed through the veins of the great model T ". He was our Steinbeck.. "darkness overnight catches me cryin, a whistle soon will blow a lonesome sound, a spark of hope becomes a flame each time the train slows down, but that train never stops.. at our town" Godspeed Merle
I live in southern Indiana. I was driving a truck when I heard the news. I wrote R.I.P. Merle in the road dust on my trailer and other drivers asked who Merle was. Truck Drivers! Sad new world.
Dearest Sir, I surely hope you are able to see this. I love the great sentiment you gave and I know full well and imagine you do too, this would be highly favored by Merle, wrote from the dust of the earth, left on a Workin' Mans' truck.... from dust to dust. I wish I was in your working route that day, came up behind you and gave Merle a few honks as in saying, 'God rest your beautiful soul, Merle'. I am going to share this here. My late husband, years before we met had a cluster of something that I will forever be envious of. You see he had many impromptu free concerts by Merle and friends. They both shared a common love, fishing! Can you imagine being on your boat, in a place of beauty, the lake, the tree-lined shore and taking in the star-lit night... then to hear the sounds coming from Merle's guitar, with his voice starting up in a song, from his boat? All of the singers and musicians on Merle's boat was part of a great night, in one giant Merle-Fest Jam Session! Many, many nights, my husband was privileged of these sessions that he was blessed to hear, as Merle sung across the waters of Lake Shasta. Thank you Merle, you came up through hard times, changed your path becoming the man you were and gave us yourself in your songs. What a legacy!
I was back stage with Haggard in the 80’s at the turn of the Century in Denver Colorado. After the show I followed his Bus to the Hotel and we partied all night with the Band!
Charlie, Most respectfully, there are similarities in Merle and Buck that typify the Bakersfield sound. It's the Telecaster and flat pick with fingerstyle, along with sparse on stage combo type arrangements. I give Don Rich and Roy Nichols as much credit as anybody for that.

Thank you Charlie Daniels. I have been saying for decades that there never was a "Bakersfield sound." Merle was Merle, and Buck was Buck. Both great, but both completely different.
I was born in Bakersfield and Merle and Buck are big there. Merle's ancestors came from the Dust Bowl, like mine. His story of being in San Quentin and seeing Johnny Cash is interesting. The Bakersfield sound is real. They pretty much made electric country music famous and those electric guitar and steel pedal licks are all very similar. Listen to Wynn Stewart, Tommy Collins, Buck Owens and the buckaroos, Merle haggard and the strangers, Wanda Jackson and Fuzzy Owens they all have that similar live electric sound where Nashville was still acoustic and folkish.
