- We decided to buy one of the best sport quads of all time! This machine will primarily be ridden by Connor but I hope to take it out from time to time. These quads are excellent for beginners and are known for their legendary reliability. I was very surprised with how well this 17 year old machine ran and I had a total blast ripping around my old trails on it!

That’s gonna be the best trail quad you’ll ever own.
I agree
@@spawny6191 i agree
I've got 2. They're tons of fun.
I have ridden both and I just personally like the yfz 450r 2016 version it’s torque and withness is so nice also like the colors more
But I also race with it but same thing
You got a frame that’s been painted and a subframe that has definitely been polished. Throw an exhaust on that ol girl and she’ll wake right up
A nice empire exhaust or even fmf with matching port work and stage 2 hotcam really wakes them up! Whole nother animal
@@coreygolfer919 rossier is the way to go. I’m sure that’s what he is gonna get
I enjoy my big gun, it increces power , is louder, and best of all it doesn't get hot.
White bros e series only way to go on a 400 ex them pipes where king shit back in the day
The hmf exhaust really woke mine up when I put it on it.
Pete, I've had the 400EX now for 19 years. I bought it new in 2002. I have gone through many skid plates, nerf bars, handlebars, and throttles. I've changed out the bumpers a couple times and the rear grab bar too. I keep front and rear plastics on the garage shelf for when the final mounting point breaks and I have to replace a fender. What I have not had a problem with has been the motor. I did finally get the top end redone in about 2015, and right now it needs the carb rebuilt and a valve adjustment, but the motor is darn near indestructible if taken care of.
Critical need parts in my opinion; Steering stabilizer, Nerf bars, full pipe and jetting, new hub and carrier bearings, and tie rod ends. After that, a real bumper and grab bar.
I will be purchasing a new YFZ450R at the end of this year, I'm deployed currently, but will not sell the 400EX. Instead, I plan to refresh the motor with all new bearings and do a complete rebuild, back to stock! I turn 60 this year and absolutely love to ride still. I enjoy your videos and will likely make your channel my first subscription. Thank you and stay safe!
Hey Harold, thanks for watching my video and for all the advice regarding the 400! I’ve wanted one of these for a long time so I definitely hope to do a lot of the upgrades you recommended. The idea is make it comfortable, and reliable! The YFZ is definitely an awesome machine and I think you’ll like it a lot! 😊👍
thank you for your service sir ❤️
If you don’t mind me asking where did you get the plastics from?
@@rlnajera03_11 you can get a set of front and rear plastics brand new on eBay for about 500 bucks
Welcome to the 400ex family Pete!! 🤘
It’s a community
Thanks Brewer! I’ve always loved these quads. I can’t see us ever getting rid of it, it’ll get a bunch of TLC 😅👍
It’s a loving family
Where the vids been brewer🤔🤔

Hey Pete, cool to see a "classic"!?! Hard to believe a 400EX was my first sport quad :P I'd have to agree on the HMF for these. Thumpers sound great on those. Would also be interesting to see upgraded suspension. Enjoy the beast!
2000 400ex is my first quad and its fucking awesome
Sheeeesh that yfz sounds amazing
Im waiting on my 2021 yfz450r se to come in June. Back order situation is killing me....
@@nickflewelling4052 cool ?
@@victorresendiz7288 who pissed in your tea?
@@urinesoakedtroglodyte5764 my thoughts exactly.... Someone pissed in his Cheerios.
I ended up buying a Can-Am X3 XDS 1000 Turbo instead, I couldn't wait anymore 🙃.
@@nickflewelling4052 sick! Those 1000cc utvs are no joke
Anyone else find the stock quad rip therapeutic?
That intro is awesome, really cool how you included the sounds of nature. Nice bike! A very nice addition to the channel.
Trx450r shocks, stage 2 hotcam, port work , full exhaust are the top 4 things I would do.
Man I know there are bike out there with more power but a 400ex is the funnest bike to ride. Have fun with it pete.
Great Video! And no, the 400ex frames did not come in red ... they are all grey (1999-2002) or silver-ish (2003+). They make replica stickers (and that one looks like a replica) of all the OEM production stuff. The OEM factory model sticker has thinner font style writing on it and that one just looks WAY TOO NEW!
... and the subframe was the same color as the frame on all years and NOT polished.
Thanks for the detailed info! This quad definitely has some character and has been worked on. I’m happy we picked it up! 😊
Awesome buy Pete ! I love the 400ex . A hard cold start on that unit is an absolute need for a valve adjustment.
Pete I Think you should get a grip seat for it, it makes it look even better.
Awesome buy Pete ! I love the 400ex . A hard cold start on that unit is it’s way of telling you it needs a valve adjustment.
I was thinking it’s most likely in need of one. I think we have a great foundation to build upon 😊👍
Brewer gets a 450 and you get a 400EX sounds like a good video in the works to me. I'm thinking about trading my 450R for 400. Getting a little older and doing more trails the 450 is a little much
Nice unit! Just got myself a near 100% mint stock 03
Awesome vid like the quads
Hey Pete. A couple of great upgrades for the early 400ex’s is a a full sparks exhaust, in my opinion it’s the best sounding exhaust and it ups the horsepower and torque than any other exhaust out there. The other is a carburetor off of a 04-05 Honda TRX450R, it truly wakes the motor right up. If you do both of those, you will not regret it one bit.
FRONT SHOCKS, do front shocks first,it makes it a different machine
Excelent brother. More videos with the honda 400ex please in dunas
I have a 2013 400x stock, best all around ride I’ve had. Leave it stock, keep good tires on it and it will outlast everything.
Dude awesome I would love to have a 400ex. I have a 300ex but the cam bearings went out on me lol. Btw my 300ex has the tool kit as well so not just on 400ex.
Sick quad! Couldn’t be more hyped about it either, i just got back from a ride at St. Joe state park!
Here in MO?
@@codystelzer5700 Yeah, great place to ride.
I haven't been there in about 5 years...ready to go back
this is where we go to ride as well. easily the best place in our area!
@@codystelzer5700 I would’ve responded sooner but I was riding on the 200 system lol, definitely a great place for beginners and expert riders, all different terrains.
i would be cool to see you enter a cross country race.
Def a tusk bumper and tusk heel and nerf bars they are so much fun I love mine man
Buy a cam, 450r carb, and a good full exhaust. It'll be a totally new machine
Just saw this vid and was like nice
450r shocks one of better improvements for them...
Sounds like a good, budget friendly upgrade 😊👍
They only came with a grey/silver frame, i have never seen a polished subframe that tool kit and rubber flap is super rare to find, i started out on a 400ex wish i would have kept it fun machine to ride
My first sport quad. First thing first get that exhaust off. New machine completely once it can breath. I had the full Yoshimura RS-3 series. Radiator scoops or air shrouds really helps keep the motor cool. Lonestar axle for a wider stance. Houser racing swing arms. Elka shocks. Renthal fat bars and pro armor front bumper and that was my first sport quad.
Thanks for the recommendations! You had yourself a fancy 400! The air shrouds are a cool idea, first comment I’ve see about those!
Let me know what kind of modifications you do to the 400 I got the same one but the 05 model 🤟
Exhaust, nerf bars, bumper, skid plates, trx450r shocks
Awesome camera angles etc. Top quality vid Pete! Glad to see you got a bugeye model, definetely my favorite 400 of all the brands ✊
Bro, you should put a rossier exhaust on it. I want one but not sure
400EX is an awesome platform. Here's my build.
04 Honda 400EX
416, JE 12:1 piston (runs on 110 octane)
Hotcam stage 2
HMF slip on/Pro Circuit header
Uni air filter
IMS oversized gas tank
450R shocks built by Jet
Full Flight A-arms
Tusk axle
Pro Taper bars
Power Madd bar risers
MSR clutch lever
Glann case saver, chain slide and swingarm bolt
Full skid plates
Alba nerf bars
Alba bumper
XFR grab bar
Gripper seat cover
GBC XC Master tires
Some basic stuff, 416, 11:1 comp piston, stg. 2 hotcam, sparks exhaust, 450r front shocks, 450 carb. CT Racing was able to get 45hp out of a similar setup with a ported head depending on what gas they used.
The stock subframe is steel & they usually get tweaked, That's a chromoly subframe
Sweet! Any idea what brand it could be? The OEM one must of went through a hard tumble 🤔👍
@@PeteHager I think it was lonestar racing, it is pretty
@@cbr600rrturbo petes subframe is an OEM that has been chrome plated. The Lonestar subframes have removable grab bars instead of the integrated like stock. Ive had a few of the LSR subframes over the years. Nice pieces but nothing wrong with OEM.
Looks like that sub-frame might be chrome powder coat?
Been waiting for this for year I love my 400
ive ridden all kinds of machines the scariest being a predator that was bored to a 600 and had god knows whatelse done and ive ridden 700s 450s and 300s but the 400ex is my favorite because of all the low end torque i love being able to just pull the front end up almost at idle and just walk it along. for upgrades its got and big gun exhaust and a 10.5:1 comppression but nothing will beat it as far as fun goes and through our trails although you can get into trouble pretty fast when the front end flys up in the woods lol
For performance: Slip-on, take off airbox lid, rejet
For comfort: trx450r front shocks revalved and resprung, stock rear shock revalved and resprung, full skid plate kit, GBC XC Master tires
Motor upgrades I would do a 426 big bore kit a bigger piston stage 2 cam and a exhaust of your choice that thing would rip. My buddy has one and it faster then some stock 450s
They are fun machines prob one of the best upgrades are 450r shocks. I am rebuilding my 05 450r and had them lying around and put them on the 400. I wouldn’t touch the motor unless ur just freshening it up.
It would be just a refresh. The idea is to keep the power manageable for beginner riders that may want to try it out 👍
Bars look solid so really all I would put on it is a new exhaust and maybe some new plastic! Love hondas dude!!
Up close and in person Pete is a awesome guy and full of knowledge about sport quads. Rev box should be next with your new mods. Love the new 400ex
I’m glad I kept my 87 Honda 250x
I love the introduction but is more lovely the 400xe
awsome man. just so ya know the 2005 and up have reverse. idk if ya said that but now you know lol
MORE 400EX VIDS PLZ
That yfz450r they should be called a raptor because the noise 🤤🤤
i was looking at some hondas but ended up getting 06 Suzuki ltr 450R make sure you do some wheelies with the honda they are the best at it hands down
SABO enters chat.....
Super sick video! Best one on UA-cam for this QUAD!
Twin row carrier, rebuild and revalve the rear shock, die grind out the stock header welds (gives same flow as an aftermarket header), steering dampener, tires, air filter, and you should be good
Hard starting when cold is normal on the stock ones. A bigger pilot jet to go along with a new pipe will help with that.
Nice 400ex pete looks good only thing I would do to it is put a stage 2 hot cam in it and put a lex mxe pipe on it that's be all I would do to it
That’s awesome!
YFZ sound crazyyyyy! Kinda makes me want one😬🤘
Get a lectron carb
Get a trx700xx next
Get urself some 450 shocks and a precision steering stabilizer
Great video! Excited to see what you do with this bike. My son rides a 2006 400ex great bikes. Please document and video all you do to it. Look forward to your next video.
Just getting bac into four wheelers and I found out about your Chanel and I love the content and I wanna make some content like you once I get my four wheeler going again
I have a box of 400ex parts that I can give you if you want them
Nice to see you finally got a used quad
Nice trailer
My old 400ex had a White Bros R4 exhaust, it sounded really nice, recommend one
I was gonna click off then I seen a comment that said the yfz sounds good so I stayed so glad i did
my uncle has a honda 400ex he jumpes it off 4 foot drops
Ahhh. Just seeing this. Didn’t know if you were apart of the Honda club or not. Good to see, man. Legendary machine there.
As a matter of fact, Pete, I’m thinking about joining the Yamaha club too and was wondering which you’d recommend between the YFZ450R and the Raptor 700R. Or how you’d compare them anyway. Perhaps you have a vid comparing the two?
Bet South Carolina my fuggin state hell yeah bubs
The engine is oil cooled and having an oversized oil cooler and oil tank helps the engine so much on really muddy days or blazing hot days.
That’s good to know! I may look into that for some of our hotter destinations 😊👍
I’m looking forward to see what you do with your new 400ex.
Frame and subframe come in metal gray/silver color only...not color painted or polished.
Good quads...I had a 2000 400ex, same color 👍🏻
Thanks for info! 😊👍
Vinyl eyebrows on the headlights is a must have lol
Lol I’m not sure if this one is gonna get the angry eyes 😅
@@PeteHager please don't!
you should put a silver hmf exhaust on it! with a black cap
people love 400ex’s you definitely need to build it out like your other quads!! i would really enjoy those vids!
My cousin has one and he’s got ss rims on it and a Fmf pipe and it’s so nice
Wow man, them different angles you shot when you rode that Honda were amazing !!! Keep up the good work Pete.
Best runing one I've seen had.. Curtis Spraks Carburetor and exhaust. Stage 2 HC with mild port work. It walked on my 450er with slip on, lid removed well jetted. All around great bikes. My Son currently rides an 01. #dependable
Pete the quality of your videos is amazing, keep it up!
Keep it simple with the 400. Hmf slip on, cheapo alba a arms. Jacob hasn't bent them so if anyone would it would be us. Get some oem 450r suspension to chuck on there and you are good to go.
If you guys haven’t bent them then they’re indestructible 😅 I’m excited to bring it to the Brewer compound 🤘
You should get a 2 stroke quad next
That’s a fun idea! 😲🤔
I love my 400ex it's a yellow 2003 bored to 416, love your videos man!
Pete. Nice buy! I got 99 last may. It came with some real nice up grades and alot of work also💸. I have a competition HMF full system. Sounds great. So easy to work on. Cant wait to see the up coming videos on yours.
You did that like a pro pet you should get in to some races
Super pumped I got one last fall that needed a bunch of work just got to ride it this spring that 450 tho sounds nice!
Really cool and the 450 looks awesome. Did you have the shocks on the 450 done or did you get different ?
Thank man! The front shocks were revalved by Rocket Ron. I plan to do a full walk around/parts update video for the 450 soon! 👍
Can't beat old air cooled Hondas! Makes me want to tear around on my 350X, but am recovering from ACL surgery.
I think I would be concentrating on suspension. It's already pretty plush, but could be improved.
One thing to remember about the older Hondas is that the rockers require hardwelding for aftermarket cams ( in most all cases, iirc).
The best thing about hondas is that you can beat them up and throw them around and they still work and run. They are very tough machines. My dad and his friends owned hondas.
A exhaust system will wake it up tons. Its like a new machine. The shocks in the front are eh ok. I Think guys swap them for 450r shocks. The 400ex is My personal Favorite sport atv. I have owned a bunch over the years and while not owning everything the 400 is SUPER easy to ride. Its NOT high strung high revs type of bike. You can just pick a gear and for the most part its just fine. The 450s are so high strung its a constant battle of gears and clutch and revs.. The 400 is the OPPOSITE. Yes you can beat on it and rev it and treat it like a race bike but you can also trail ride it and to me I can do it LONGER with less work then a 450.. I own 2 400ex currently and they are amazing bikes.
buy a raptor 700👍🏻lol ther a whole nother level
@@newfonewhodis2652 ive ridden my brothers raptor 700 and my other brothers 660 raptor. The 700 IS awesome however for ME its a work out. Its just not easy to ride like a 400ex. The 700 IS faster however NOT as much as you would think 400cc vs 700cc.... Ive raced my 400ex vs the raptor many many times. I never win but its fairly close.
You should get a 250r
As of now I want that to be my next machine, or at least a 2 stroke at the very least 😬
You should throw on an empire ehuast on it
Hey pete you should put on a fmf or hmf exhuast
I had an 03 400ex stock bore but was port and polished and was an absolute beast
I love the 400ex one of my favorite atv of era
Hot can stage 2 and big bore kit to 416
from what i have seen you don't need any mods to motor maybe change and put newer handle bars thing rips great enjoy. it is really great to see a video where the rider wares the proper gear and helmet thank you great video preston
Thanks man! We definitely will be focusing on some handling upgrades since these machines are so reliable as is! I appreciate your positive feedback 👍
