Thanks for the tips, I think I now know why I haven't succeeded with seeds or cuttings yet. Glad I watched this, cause it's June again now. Thanks again.
I like to do both hard and soft wood cuttings in late spring after the new growth has hardened off. I’ve actually propagated branches as a cutting. I think the key thing is to keep it humid.
I just left Kyoto and fell in love with Japanese maples! Going to start acquiring some and excited for the new journey. I’ve mostly propagated mulberries but am sure the skill set transfers over.
Great video! Just two important points from personal experience. 1 - maple seeds need cold AND moisture over winter in order to break down the germination inhibiting enzyme. I stratified mine dry in the fridge and none came up 2 - shishigashira is a great cultivar on its own roots and their are bonsai examples over 100 years old. I had good success with cuttings and airlayers this season on them
Lol ...the tree is not that happy yet. Hahahahaha 😂 thankyou for the funny ..on the graftting And Air layering segment.. Thank you for Sharing You're priceless knowledge... much appreciated Watching from Washington State.
Jonny that was brilliant i air layer in the south of the UK from mid March to mid June with a big success rate i also put seeds in the fridge from November to April with good success i also graft with limited success probably 1 in 10 so i'm doing something wrong. This week i have taken 30 Acer cuttings and put them in a box as you suggest and i'll let you know how i get on with those but i did cut the leaves in half these are in my greenhouse. So with all this going on for the last 7 years i have accumulated over 300 Acers the love of my life as there is no wife to tell me off lol. Thanks again. Andy in Bognor Regis UK
The method is similar to the method I use for Sarracenia pitcher plants. I moisten a paper towel and wrap the seeds in it in a plastic sandwich bag and put it in my fridge for about a month.
Thanks for sharing. I just harvested about 50 Seedlings this past month from seeds that fell on the lawn. Most of which came from our "over grown" Pixie (over 20 ft high and still growing). I have had zero luck with hard and softwood cuttings. I have had about 50% with air layering but that was with a dwarf river birch, not Japanese Maples (have not tried it). I hope to try some grafting this summer to have offspring of my cultivars: Pixie, Margaret Bee, Lozita, Nuresagi, Moonfire? or Fireglow?
Thanks for these interesting videos. Acers grow well with me in south west Scotland and I tried air layering this year, but in July, and that was probably too late in the season, as root nodes have formed, but no roots. I'll try in May next year.
Got my palmatum butterfly growing for cutting next year (3-4yo) and another i have made into a bonai, cuttings this year i got was some hinoki Cyprus and i will be planting some acer, sweetgum and pine later this year so next year is going to be fun 😁😁
Japanese Maple Tree are always my favourite one , but haven't try propagated by seeds , perhaps I will.l try since I've been watching your video , and thank you .
so when you talk june or july - in what hemisphere are you talking from / about - maybe unstead of months you could say autumn or spring or summer or winter ? Thanks for video anyways well done
I’ve dug up several seedlings from my parents garden and been growing them. I used the same soil that the parent tree was in but should I have used potting soil instead? The soil I’m using seems a little more compact/stays moist for a long time.
@mattberberi6866 21 seconds ago Thank you. Do you think I should repot immediately?? The little seedlings have not bloomed this year yet. Although the buds are starting to form. This is their second spring now.
Was curious if anyone can help me I just planted 6 Japanese maples yesterday They are dormant and we are in New Hampshire They are about 5 to 8 years old and were in the larger 3 and 5 gal pots Ground here is still sift not froze I’m curious if anyone thinks they will come back in the spring ? I assume they will because these are more established I have a few blood good, Crimson, and lace leaf Thoughts anyone?
If your cuttings' leaves dry up and fall off are they pretty much dead or should you give them more time? My plastic bins got a little too much sun and they got hot. All the leaves dried up and fell off. I hate to give up on them but I have no experience whether they might still take?
@JonnyMaple Thanks...I'll call it a loss and refill the tote with some new cuttings. There were a couple trees that I won't be able to get to again that I was really hoping to get going. But that's life. At least I won't waste time watering dead sticks lol.
You don’t get different varieties from seed. Most times you’ll always get a standard acer. Sometimes you’ll get a genetic mutation that makes the plant have different properties.
Hi, I have a slightly off-topic question, I recently bought a very rare Japanese dwarf maple. Unfortunately, when UPS dropped it off it was placed directly in the hot sun, despite the seller writing too place in the shade. It obviously lost all its leaves within a few days, I've done everything possible to help it survive. The top trunk is basically dead, I can still see very small shoots and greenwood at the base. I am still a newcomer to bonsai and maples, is there anything I can do to help it if it won't bounce back? If all fails I was considering grafting it to a larger healthy red Japanese maple but I don't know if that's going to save it..
When you mention selling your slips and grafted named jrms, is there a patten legal problem. Seed propagation wouldn't be a problem because it's a "new" variety (hybrid).
Most Japanese Maple varieties are not patented, so they can be asexually propagated. You just have to do the research and verify that a variety is not patented before propagating.
Those are from a different species of Maple trees (not Japanese Maple trees). All Acer palmatum trees have seeds that ripen and fall in the fall/winter.
I'm planning to scour my neighbourhood this autumn for Japanese maple seeds. Unsurprisingly, they're pretty common here in Japan. We don't have those fancy American cultivars though.

Very helpful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I’m a newbie in propagation and have a lot to learn. I’ll be watching all your videos. Thanks again.
Awesome! I am glad they are helpful.

Thank you for your time and effort on this subject, I appreciate it very much
Thank you for sharing! Awesome trees! 🌳🌳🌳
Thanks for the help. Interesting and inspirational. Great work.
Thank you!

Thanks for your great help. ❤
This video deserves at least 1,000,000 views 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thanks!
Super helpful video. Thank you! Any tips on handling an acer buergerianum? Im wondering if it accepts cuttings well.
Great information.
Which cultivar are you touching at 13:19? I have been trying to figure out its name for a while
What hardiness zone are you in. It would help so that we could correlate the times of year you are talking about.
Great video! Do you like to let your seedlings or cuttings max out the root system in the smaller pots?
so when you talk june or july - in what hemisphere are you talking from / about - maybe unstead of months you could say autumn or spring or summer or winter ? Thanks for video anyways well done
Great video!!!
I’ve had a Japanese maple for 24 years, and it was planted by the previous owners. I have Never, Ever had one sprout. I’ll try the seeds again
Dziękuję za wspaniały film❤
What type of climate are you in? I would think local climate would change dates for these propagation techniques. Thanks.
I’ve dug up several seedlings from my parents garden and been growing them. I used the same soil that the parent tree was in but should I have used potting soil instead? The soil I’m using seems a little more compact/stays moist for a long time.
Use a well draining potting soil instead.

Do you sell seeds?
Please lmk if you find anyone who does. 😢

That usually means that they will fail in my experience.

Hi, can you please share some reliable source to buy maple seeds online. Where will i be able to get different verities

How well do you think a coral bark Japanese maple would root from cuttings with, of course, hormone powder?
I have had success with rooting Sango Kaku.
What is the requirement for a tree to seed? Im watching several maples and haven't found seeds at all even the big wild trees
Trees produce seeds only in the spring
Do you happen to sell these seedlings? would love to get a handful of each variety!
I will likely offer some for sale later on this year. Stay tuned!
Does anyone know if you can eat the maple fruit, I tasted one today, and it was sweet. But I spat it, just in case.
每一粒種子都有可能變成新的品種👍👍👍
Yes!

I would definitely do a couple grafts from the tree to be safe.... then try some kind of root simulator and baby the tree back to health.
Do you sell live plant ??
Ever see a small Japanese maple shrub growing under the shade of a 30 Japanese maple tree? When these trees are grafted, it happens a lot.
What is the best rooting harmone gel for aceres
I have used Midas Hydro rooting compound in the past, and this year I will be trying Clonex rooting gel.
I just potted 2 seedlings this week! My mother in law also has a couple that I’m going after 😂
What would the common mature height of Japanese maple grown from seed ?
It varies quite a bit. There is no standard when growing from seed.

No, sorry

Awesome - I wish it were easier to export plants internationally!
10:18 And after all this, the first roots can be seen only after four months😧
Hi do you have Japanese maple seeds for sale?
Not right now, but maybe in the future.
Air layering what that means?
It is a way to root a branch on a tree while it is still connected to the tree. Here is my video on this: ua-cam.com/video/fnZSHhW_p9c/v-deo.html
Do you sell your seeds?
I may in the future, but not right now.
Черенками так же хорошо разводится
❤❤❤
Do u seek trees?
No, i think seven of nine is from Battlestar Galactica
You say in my area what is your area?
How do you grow your root stock? "Green japanese maples?"
Just Acer palmatum seeds from what I believe to be a Bloodgood variety.
😇
But will the seeds produce the same tree?
