- I had been working on recording the Bourree’s from the 3rd suite (in C Major!) with repeats, in the wonderful acoustic of the 2nd floor hallway at PSU’s Lincoln Hall, when I decided to change things up a bit. Here is a direct comparison of my two instruments- a Jakstadt c. 2001, and a Joseph Hill, c. 1780. (the darker bass). Typically I would use the Jakstadt for auditions, recitals, and solo playing, and play the Hill in the orchestra.
I put my iPad about 15-20 feet out to get an idea of how the basses sound in the acoustic. The bow I used is my baroque bow by David Van Edwards. For the da capo, I recorded it complete on each bass, so stick around until the end! The playing isn’t perfect but it’s a rough idea about how the basses sound in comparison. What do you think? Let me know in the comments what bass you prefer!
