I don't mean to sound mean but, the woman that said that they might take and be able to scrape up a few dollars to get 2 kids meals off of the dollar menu from Mcdonalds and then substitute the rest with beans. Instead of getting something off the dollar menu from Mcdonalds why not take that few dollars and get some can food or rice or something that will last longer then take out.

      Yeah I was thinking that.

Get some beans and rice. That's my dinner

Some tips i have learned over the years being on a low income myself, It is possible to eat well on a low income but you have to know how to budget and what foods to get that are healthy and cheap. Lentils, dried beans, chick peas and peanut butter are cheap sources of protien, dried legumes take longer to prepare but are well worrth it, frozen vegetables and tin vegetables are much cheaper than fresh and have a much longer shelf life. If you are worried about the salt content in tin vegetables, pour them into a colender and rinse them off in cool water, it does not remove all the salt but it does remove about 70% of it. Tinned fish like tuna, sardines, herrings are cheap, and are a good source of protien, calicum and vitamin d, plus omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Rice, pasta and oatmeal are cheap carbs, there are also some cheap veg, poataoes, carrots, onions for example. Buying flour and making your own bread is much cheaper in the long run than buying several loaves, i make my own flat breads and you do not need yeast, just flour, water and bit of butter or oil. You can also use it to make your own dumplings, perogies, biscuts, whatever suits your fancy. Supermarkets are good at using tricks to encourage people to buy the more expensive items, for example, they will put the more expensive brands at eye level so those are the first items you see, they put the cheaper brands of the same product on the lower shelves. Store brands are just as good and much cheaper, so insrtead of picking up that can of heinz baked beans, look on the shelves below it, all your paying for basically is the brand, not the product. Recipes from the great depression, and WWII when food was scarce and peopole had to make do with what they had are marvelous inspirations and the majority of the food they used is still very cheap today. If you can get some fruit, apples are one of the best choices because they have a longer shelf life then most and are very versatile, you can bake them, put them in bread, make applesauce with them, all kinds of things.

Rice, pasta, and potatoes are called poor people's food for a reason . It is because it is a filler when you don't have much else.

Cinnamon toast, eat your dinner. That's heartbreaking. Some restaurants here throw out food at the end of the day, and sadly some pour ammonia over the food they put in the dumpster to prevent dumpster diving. That is just heartless and cruel to people who could have found enough to eat.

My family of 6 eats just fine on $120 per week. We cook all our food. Staple crops provide us with cheap but healthy calories. Beans, wheat, rice, small amounts of meat provide affordable calories. Supplement with a multivitamin. I rarely get sick and I don't eat a bunch of high priced produce. I simply supplement with a multivitamin for $.05 / day.

Five kids??? No wonder they're broke! All the poorest people in my town have the most kids. Why??? Those children suffer. It's so sad. In the past my family has had financial issues. We definitely would've qualified for food stamps. But my parents are smart shoppers and we always had plenty to eat. We rarely ate out. We ate tons of vegetables, rice, and beans. I still do because it's what I like.

Can I suggest the importance of stocking up on food when you have extra money. If you have an extra $10, stock up on a sack of beans, following week you have $5, buy some canned items. You're stock pile will grow. And when life throws a curve ball, bust into your storage pantry till. money becomes available again.

I am from Europe and I am just shocked to see the situation in America! Growing up, I was always told that America is a dream land, a place nicer than any other, a place of rich people, richer than anywhere else, a place where your dreams come true. But gradually, I started seeing the real face of the U.S.A. It is much poorer than I thought. And much more dangerous than I thought. Thank God I don´t live there. Thank God that I live in our small country in the middle of Europe where there are no shootings at schools or churches or on the streets. Where we have just 2% of unemployment! The lowest rate of all countries in Europe. Where hunger is an unknown word. If you can´t work for some reason, you can ask for benefits and the government will pay you money each month. Not enough for luxury holidays abroad. But enough to buy food for your entire family for the entire month. And if you don´t have enough money to pay rent, the government can give you special benefits to support you so that you can pay the rent and you don´t get kicked out on the street. And if you have kids and you have no money for their school lunch, you can apply for free school lunches for all your kids and they will get fed every day. (Luch is the main meal of the day here. It consists of a soup and a warm dish like meat with some sauce and potatoes, rice and so on. Plus some fruit or dessert and a beverage. It is the same meal that Americans eat for dinner - the same type of food. But we don´t eat warm dishes for our evening meals, as it is hard to digest before bed. We eat it at noon). So I really am glad that I live in the Czech Republic, not in the "developed" U.S.A. that is not too developed at all. For 40 years, our country was under the Communist regime and when we finally got rid of it in 1989, we realized we were 40 years behind the developed western countries including the U.S.A. But now I think that our situation is not that bad at all. I really feel that the U.S. is way behind Europe... It is a country with 10 million hungry children and with millions of homeless people and people living in motels, trailers and even cars! OMG...

My sister in law who is still a teacher shares her food too. It's ashamed that this happens in America. I donate food to the homeless every week even when my business was was down due to covid for 2 years. I still do... Too bad we got to many cities and States. I'm actually hauling some blessing or goody bags to Texas and Mississippi nearby States for the summer. My family of 3 is small. I wish more people would share. I dread to think what's happening to domestic animals with people never having got their cat or dog fixed. That is heartbreaking too. More and more poor unwanted animals with no food (and probably no water). Cats cannot just catch mice and other animals need food too. Of course it's so darn sad the kids have to go to bed hungry. I often wonder what these so called 'movie stars' who make millions a picture are doing with all the money.

Yes, I’m one who believes we should help everyone around the world who struggles this way...but I think we should start with The United States first, then down the line.
I see so many kids and families struggle..it just pulls at my heart strings big time! I wish I could help everyone!! I now though worry about my own family! My kids are doing well for themselves, it’s my husband and I that I worry about. This could very well be us!! My husband is diabetic, if something was to happen to him, I would be I a world of hurt! I have lots of things to pray about...WORLD hunger is one of them.

@@ghg76vhfyg11 I agree. Now I don’t know if your response was as a smart remark or not, no kindness shown…I could be wrong. It’s not just food I should have said, so much more people are struggling with. What most fail to admit is it’s the poor, the people who live paycheck to paycheck that make this world go round.
Now what is sad is we have people from other countries working jobs our own people won’t do. We also have people who refuse to go back to work now and use Covid as an excuse thinking their government money will keep common on in..(over) The people of US need to wake up and shake the cobwebs off and get to work! Now, it’s not myself I worry about anymore, it’s my children’s children. What’s going to happen 10 yrs from now that everything is changing! I’m thankful my kids are well educated and have very good secure jobs. I help whoever and when I can, I feel good about this…but for example I do see the elders being pushed away, or expected at the age of 70 plus to understand technology, their life’s has over night done a complete 360..they are confused and can’t get help. I was at the electric company the other day paying a bill, a line of elderly people were there asking for help because they don’t have computers to pay their bills nor do they understand how to use them. You know what they were told. The library has computers, go there and use them. Most of them don’t even drive, couldn’t get there anyway. Again, even though they still have never seen a computer, I saw a woman and her husband, they had to be close to 90..The wife was in tears she was so confused. The husband said it’s a shame nobody will help them. The young lady at the desk rolled her eyes. God will have her answer to this! So, you are listening to me vent, my apologies. If this offends you,..any of you, have compassion. I think having compassion myself is great but it too is a strong flaw…My mother once told me and does still, I take care of the underdog. I take care of the bird the breaks it’s wing :( Or I would bring in snakes my mother told me and wrap them around the steering wheel…I thought they would come back to life. Lol Anyway, that’s my 2 cents.
      Take care~

Brought to you by ConAgra? Well... that's why there isn't a lot of money for food. Farm subsidies to grow useless crops, like too much corn, and very little going to actual food. We can sit here and argue about parental responsibility all day long, but when our charity dollars go to big food and not individuals, we have a problem.

Anything picked by hand will cost a tremendous amount of money compared to anything picked with a machine. Wheat, beans, corn, oats, and rice provide us with the basic caloric needs. The vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients come from seasonal vegetables and supplements. My family of 6 eats smart and cheap. We keep our food at $1.50 / 1,000 calories. When we shop that is how we know what to buy. I don't buy it if it cost more than $2 / 1,000 calories except for special occasions.

So many new laws prohibit restaurants in many areas from donating food. It's such a waste! I live near a local Ronald McDonald house and used to love making a big batch of comfort foods for the parents and kids staying there. It always put a smile on their faces & mine. It's no longer allowed. If you can afford to have it catered, it's fine, but your homemade meatloaf and mashed potato or lasagna dinners are now banned. Make sense? It was so good to see families in turmoil and pain, sit down for a hot, homemade meal. We need to use common sense.

We have to be as parents more educated on how to feed our children some people just didn't care beans is a very good meal four children and you add maybe some bread or some sort of vegetables but once you make those beans you can make it with tomato sauce you can make chili out of the beans and it be something that last for 2 days and you'll have a full plate of food for your children you can have ground beef with it you can have either turkey ground turkey drop ground chicken and you buy noodles noodles is another meal that you can sort of make maybe spaghetti and and meat sauce not meatballs but meat sauce you cannot make macaroni and cheese and have a salad with it because cheese is protein you can cut some of the fat out because cheese have fat in it so there's a whole lot of things we can do but we have to be educated a lot of people by what they like not what will make a good meal I used to have just plain grits and eggs or cheese grits and eggs and if I had frankfurters or sausage something that was you know meat that's what they would have so there's all different kinds of combinations you can make your own pizza would you buy mozzarella cheese or cheese of your choice you can buy Pitta bread and you can put sauce on it if you have sauce left from the spaghetti and then you can put your your choice of vegetables on your pita pita bread you put it in the oven and each child could have they own custom made pizza there's a whole lot of things that people can do what they don't understand what doesn't sound appetizing but I fed my kids and when we had a little extra money then I would buy order a pizza and a soda and that was a tree it was a treat and we would get together and find out what each one wanted the majority wants whether it was a pizza or the Chinese food but we had treats so find out what is a trait find out how to make cookies if your home you have the time make them I even used to make some cookies from the people that gave me a surplus food and I give it to give them some cookies and they said this is what you may from the surplus food they had no idea they gave me the butter because they wanted margarine we have to be as parents more educated on how to feed our children some people just didn't care beans is a very good meal for children and your ad maybe some bread off the some sort of vegetables but once you make those beans you can make it with tomato

Not having the food and not having the money to buy food is one thing, Another part is people that don’t know how to stretch a dollar, two things at a dollar menu at McDonald’s can feed the whole family with good food choices,, providing they have a grocery store to go to. There is no reason why those profit rich grocers ( Walmart comes to mind ) to sacrifice and put and out stores on food deserts too. I saw a lady on welfare with 2500.00 for five kids, one of which was too young to eat real food spend 200.00 on sugar water and individual sugar loaded fruit cups. Education helps too.

The mom can't get her kid a salad? Lettuce is only around .88 cents, a cucumber and a couple of tomatoes even less, plus a homemade oil and vinegar salad dressing. Honestly, I think people live beyond their means so that when hard times hit, they are in debt up to their eyeballs, and two, people do not know how to manage money properly. You can also grow your own stuff seasonally.

    • @evelyonbyrd758

I donate to an organization that feeds the poor
It breaks my heart to understand that there will be some families sitting down at dinner, holding hands and THANKING GOD! It was not God that put food on their table, it was caring, unselfish people who donated their time and money
What scares me is that these same people will go to church and abuse me and my loved ones to hell!
The world is so intertwined now - a lot of people have jobs because of customers in China, an atheist country
The war has disrupted food supplies, Ukraine was the bread basket - many Islamic countries might starve, but they will go to their graves hurling abuses at unbelievers!
Only religion can turn good people into soulless Nazis!

I know this isn't a possibility for everyone but for some it could be a help. I am below the poverty line and I heard the mom talking about buying off the $1 menu. I would buy rice and dry beans with that money. 😋
