Sun King/Mean Mr. Mustard- The Beatles (Guitar Cover) Abbey Road Medley

- The Beatles recorded Sun King straight into Mean Mr. Mustard on July 24th 1969 for the Abbey Road album. It was part of the long medley on side two
The backing track consisted of Paul on bass (with a fuzz face pedal), Ringo on his Ludwig kit, George on lead guitar and John on rhythm guitar. They recorded Sun King/Mustard separately from the rest of the medley songs, but on the album You Never Give Me Your Money fades into Sun King
To my ears, George used his Rosewood Telecaster on neck pickup. It's bright but still full sounding. He used a Fender Twin Reverb, with the amp’s tremolo effect. He starts Sun King with no tremolo and then turns it on at 0:15 and off again at 2:28
I'm using my 2007 Fender Hot Rod '52 Vintage Telecaster on the neck pickup, into an Analogman King of Tone pedal for a slight boost. My amp is a 1974 Fender Pro Reverb amp, which is very similar to the Twin Reverbs the Beatles used. The tremolo settings on my amp are: Speed at 6.5 and Intensity at 8.5
John Lennon used his Epiphone Casino into a Leslie rotating speaker for both songs. He didn’t use a pick for either songs, fingerpicking during Sun King, a technique he learned from Donovan in India in 1968. He most likely used his bridge pickup with the tone knob rolled down slightly. He used these settings often, including on the Rooftop Concert
I had to listen to the isolated tracks to fully understand what fingering John used for Sun King. Although the chords are F sharp minor to E major, John fingerpicks the open Low E string throughout the verses- 0X2220 to 0X2222. Paul's bass plays F sharp but John stays on low E
I'm using my 2021 Epiphone USA Casino on the bridge pickup, with the tone knob rolled down to about 7. I'm plugged into my Strymon Lex pedal in STEREO!
The Lex emulates a Leslie rotating speaker, and has the ability to run in mono or stereo. I chose to run it in stereo into two amplifiers, for your listening pleasure. The two amps are my 1974 Pro Reverb and my 1965 Fender Bassman. The Lex is on slow speed setting

I think the themes brought out in Mean Mr. Mustard are very reflective of Revovler type imagery, definitely one of my favorites too!

Would you consider covering Fleetwood Mac's Albatross (the song that inspired the riff for Sun King)? Also the Anthology 3 version of Ain't She Sweet from the same session as Sun King/Mustard
Yeah I love ain’t she sweet, the gene Vincent version and anthology version. I’m not a big Fleetwood Mac fan but albatross is a great one
I’m sorry but the riff of sun king is played wrong. An A6 chord on the 5th fret needs to be played, which is in this case an E6 shape chord played 5 frets higher so with your medium finger on the 7th fret of the A string (and with the high E string open). I think this is also confirmed by the fact that the three-chord progression at the end of the verse sounds best if you play the same A6 chord, followed by a Bb6 and a B6 chord, and then getting back on the capo fret with an E6 chord which ends the whole riff
Yeah that’s definitely another effective way to play it. I still hear John playing A6 on the 2nd fret, especially when he releases the high f#-e

For the start of sun king id recommend the bridge position on the tele. Sounds much more like the record.

My Strymon Lex Leslie pedal is used in stereo here into my two amps- 1965 bassman and 1974 pro reverb. The lex is on a slow speed setting, mic distance at 11 o clock, horn level at noon, preamp drive at 9 o clock

One of the repeated notes in the beginning arpeggio sequence played on the Casino is the wrong note. Maybe this was intentional because you like it better that way?

It’s the 5th note that you pick during each bar - you’re picking the same note there as that of the 2nd note picked, but it should be the same note as the 3rd note that you pick. (Sorry - I am a guitarist but I’m all by-ear and don’t know the names of all the notes). I’m a fan of your reconstructions and I know you have a great ear, and strive for authenticity.
