Any patient who was assigned female gender at birth is potentially at risk for developing breast cancer and should undergo screening. The point of screening is to catch tumors when they're at their smallest, most treatable stage, and the only way to catch them small is starting early
and coming yearly. Our risk of breast cancer starts going up a little bit in our 30s and
then in our 40s, we really see an uptick in the rates of breast cancer among all women.
Women in their 40s tend to get more aggressive tumors. The tumors tend to be more deadly.
They're more likely to spread around the body, and that's why screening at 40 really can save
a lot of lives. The consensus now after reviewing data from hundreds of thousands of women
in multiple studies in different countries all around the world is that 40 really is where
we can do the most good and where we have the most breast cancer mortality reduction.
