So as a drummer, we do these things where we dampen the sound of the snare drum using pieces of adhesive gel or gum. What it does is it removes the high pitch ringing, as the physical contact disperses the higher frequencies and also the extra reverb, making the sound tight and creating a crack without it being too sharp and fatiguing. I guess in this case, the crack of the snare drum that's pleasing is the keyboard thock. You know how if you accidentally hit a piece of sheet metal and it reverberates, the way to kill the sound is to just grab it? Yeah, it kinda works like that. What this tape mod feels like is a version of sound dampening that can be caused by the sound high frequencies the PCB makes when a key is struck.
Reckon we could have a drummer gummer and keyboard crossover?
Quick question about the gum part, do you eat the gum before putting it there or do you just open the packet and just put it in there?
@@honknytes2581 Sorry that must be confusing. There's a brand of dampening gel called drum gum, so I'm used to calling it that. It's not chewing or bubble gum. It's more like acoustic play-doh.
I wondered why I'd seen drumkits with tape on them, thank you for this explanation
Thank you for explaining the science behind!

Can confirm, especially if you use two layers, that you have to squish down the tape as much as possible. When I put my second layer on haphazardly it resulted in a crinkling sound from bits of tape compressing against my case foam. I just went went with one layer and I do enjoy the added pop.
This video should have been called "Hipyo being salty for 10 minutes straight" Lol loved it hahaha
I’d argue there’s no such thing as “not an enthusiast keyboard.” We’re enthusiasts, we get enthused regardless of whether something is standard or not, premium or budget, packed with functions or serves a basic purpose! So far, these A80 and L80 boards have been the best-sounding prebuilts I’ve ever heard in stock form, and they definitely convinced me that costar stabs are superior despite whatever tuning shortfalls people may have with them.
Fair enough, it's more that its not marketed twords enthusiasts quite like others
Just a word of caution... ScotchBlue has changed to a vinyl type material for their painter's tape (had a distinctly rubber feel to it) if you want painters tape that is actually more of a paper composition.... do not buy the Scotch brand. Given what I've heard about a paper towel mod and what it does to sound, I'm thinking most will defiantly want a paper based tape... just something to be aware of : )
I could not find anything that says it has changed.
just use masking/painters tape. any tape with not too much residue
after that you can basically use any tape as another layer
yo washi tape+duct tape gang?
Masking tape + 2 layers of electrict tape if you guys going for the thocc
@@jannclaudebinoya clever, will try when I get my first board!
Painters tape not only leaves residue, it leaves itself and a distinct annoying odor, if you forget to peel it away and replace it within one or two weeks. Seriously, read the label.
Sticky notes are the only known adhesive that doesn't become a mess for future-you.
4 masking tape on board and 1 gel tape on the bottom (because it doesn't come with any foam) here.
Ooh this will be a good video! Well done Hipyo
ok thanks for the detailed information !! thanks alot!!
Thank you for the experiment! and I had a good laugh even when you were explaining :D
i did the mod now it sounds sooooo much better!!! love your vids keep it up

Your vids are so fun to watch! Plus your speaking voice sounds relaxing 😀 Love how the keeb turned out btw. Also congrats on your keycap set! Great job Hipyo ✨
I get it now. Costar stabs are good if and only if you don't want to mod at all.
Thank you very much for this tip! I just attached some blue tape to a noisy, cheap sounding keyboard and the problem is solved.
Your voice is incredible. Almost like Ryan Reynolds but not all the way. Smooth and clear. I could listen to you talk for hours on hours, about anything... Even skill share ads...
*Chef's kiss*
After experimenting with the Tempest Tape Mod there's a few things I think people should consider before thinking it's going to make their keyboards sound amazing.
One thing is for sure the mod makes the keyboard way louder. And although it will make popping noises stand out. It's a bit of a two edged sword. As it will also amplify any other sound your switch might have. So if your switches have any kind of stratchiness, or stem rattle. Those sounds will also be amplified. Same goes for the bottoming out sound of your switch (Assuming you bottom out your keys) if you don't like it it will be even louder than it was before.
So yeah, to really get the most out of this mod. You kind of have to either find some really well factory lubed switches. Or bite the bullet and become a full fledge keyboard addict and start lubing and filming those switches by hand. Not sure I'm there yet. :D
If one layer makes a difference, then it stands to reason that additional layers also would.
For me, 1 layer sounded like a step in the right direction, but 3, a bit much, starting to get muffled. I'm curious about the sound of 2 layers on this, because I feel there's such a big difference between 1 and 3 that there's plenty of missed soundscape in between.
idk the difference between 1 and 3 layers of tape was negligible at best.
Honestly mixing the tapes makes a difference as well. I did one layer of masking tape and then one layer of electrical tape on top of it, and it made my board sound awesome!
Yo guys can we use medical tape as an alternative for painters tape?
@@hishammorol2225 no, because medical tape is mostly fabric, while masking tape is paper
also medical tape is more expensive
@@pate00711 There is a "paper tape" used in hospitals. It's not as sticky as the other stuff.
are there any other keyboards with this layout? I like the separated F row but condensed arrow cluster, while also having all three modifier keys on the right half

Confirmed there is something wrong with my hearing earlier I can't hear a diff between a lubed & not lubed black ink v2's now this, subbed keep em coming
Like how you're honest with the sponsers products lol
I was looking for low tack painters tape but I must admit these keyboards look cool. Might have to pick one up. Have a great day.
hell yea im setting a reminder for this premiere
Hi hipyo I love your videos and you inspired me to like keyboards more
I am starting to get into custom keyboards and your channel has popped up here and there.
I got to the "for only $169....". It felt like an eternity, but the "nice" came at the perfect time and I immediately had to sub.
Nice.
stop making me wait a whole day you hipyo man
in the before and after i hear that it makes it less clicky. sort of dulls the sound. removes the high frequency being produced. as usually would happen if you put tape all over something. id like to take a closer look at my keyboard to see where exactly the sound is coming from and whats producing the sound.
You got me with the extra howdy-hey. I couldn't risk skipping past that.
This mod is a must-do now for all of my future builds that can love it

I finally took the plunge. thanks for the discounts!
@Hipyotech I recently put a diaper in the bottom of a cheap Gmk67 board. Highly recommend. Size two fits perfect when you cut the elastic off the sides .
Just did this plus foam mod on my Logitech G610 and it sounds SO much better! :)
The keyboard is called lime and it’s red. “That made me a bit *sour* ”
i wonder if this could be applied to more than just MX boards, like Topre/NiZ boards or maybe even Alps!
I finally came around to doing the tape mod and a little foam underneath my Keychron K6 and replaced the keycaps all today and I can honestly say this keyboard sounds like a totally different animal now I was not expecting anything going into it but HOLY....
What foam did you use? :O
Im just curious? Wont the heat from your battery or just the board cause the tape to melt on ? Or just overtime the tape glue to cause dmg ?
Just bought a keyboard and trying to find things to mod it haha definitely will do this!
that sponsor transition was so smooth
“If you watch this ad I’ll give you an extra ‘howdy hey’ at the end”

I genuinely unironically not skipped the ad because hipyo promised me another "Howdy Hey". Lmao.
Since this day, hipyo do tape mod every single build
Those keyboards looks absolutely beautiful man.. god damn
Do WS morandi switch’s work with it?!
Hey @HipyoTech, I saw you used kilmat in a spacebar, have you ever tryed using it in other keys with stabalizers or that are more than 1u? If not you should try it, i just build my first keyboard with hep of your videos and used kilmat in all keys bigger than 1 u. It sound amazing
i actually really like that its called lime for some reason, its so random and the font is cool
Hey hipyo can you try to make a review of the gateron cap golden v2 i heard they sound great and pretty cheap
h3cc yea i already put foam in my $30 keyboard so now i'm gonna add tape. you have a nice voice lol
tape mod more like pog
Now I'm curious if this will do anything for my arcade stick buttons by putting some tape down in the button housings. 🤔
Do you have any videos wher eyou convert a rubber dome keyboard into a mechanical keyboard? Or even just mod it to sound better?
Unpopular opinion: Costar stabs are MUCH easier to mod and make It Nice than Cherry stryle ones... You dont need to clip things, lube sliders, and all these things. You only need Dieletric grease and maybe some tape and you are done. And you dont need to dessolder your board to mod them. Thats the best part! Oh, and as you said, they are MUCH better stock than the Cherry ones. People only like Cherry style ones because they are easy to put The keycaps back, while Costar ones have better quality in general. It's simply a more clever design. Oh, and It's not mushy like those terrible stock Cherry ones.
came here to say this, i honestly really prefer costar stabs for modding. they're a lot easier to get right.
its easier to mod but more rattly when you dont mod it
@@GenuineRage what mods can you do to them? Mine really sounds annoying
Oddly enough I think every keyboard I own has costar stabilizers
Considering this guy has a whole channel dedicated to building keyboards and takes him 13 minutes to just put the keycaps on the stabs is pretty sad. I can change the whole keycaps set off and on quicker than that. And I very rarely do it.
You had me at "bonus tape".
totally agree with you. Just place a screw where we can get easy access!!!!!!! Just hide underneath the keyboard is just fine!!!!!!!!
your voice is soooo relaxing :)
Hipyo videos make me happy
Basically, sound is more "shallow" because you lose some resonance due to sound dampening properties of paper, and also there is less space where sound can bounce around.
I actually wonder how would soft cardboard do. Probably, the softer and more airy material the better.
@HipyoTech Will tape modding the keyboard block any RGB features?
My dude got me gud with the thocc buzzword lol
Three seconds in and I’m laughing my ass off. SUBBED IMMEDIATELY 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Your keycaps are cool AF! Why are they not available on the link in the description?
just tried this last night and what a difference it makes!
Can you film a tutorial video about disassembling this L80 keyboard in the video?
If i dont want to mod my keyboard should I get the a80, the l80 cosmic traveler or the og80 wormhole?
I currently have a K95 Platinum XT keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches, and I’m thinking of building a keyboard for when I travel and don’t want to use my laptop keyboard for gaming or productivity. What size would be good for this? What do you think about GMMK Pro as a starter keyboard?
I recommend 60% or 65%
Check out the kbdfans tofu 60, it’s a great starter board.
I love the classic "howdy hey, hipyo tech here"
You should try using pe foam! It really makes a difference
yeah i legit do this to all of my keyboards. youre right that it does add a little pop but thats why i enjoy it. I usually just do 2-3 layers though. never gone a full 4. i see no need to go that many. The only reason i do 3 is because i can get the edges of the tape to stick down on each other and make the tape one big piece, so its easy to peel off and put back on if i need to desolder something.
What type of tape do you use?
Well, guess I'm gonna spend an afternoon taking apart my board to put tape and weather stripping inside
bro got sponserd and just strated flaming em. respect
i was literally just looking at they keyboard last night wtf are the odds
Well after getting into the keyboard hobby and binge watching hipyo tech videos for two weeks I can officially say I have just performed my first keyboard mod on my $30 a dragon keyboard my cousin got me I don't even think it's hot swap so rip it's not that good of a board and the stabilizers are pretty rattling and not good in the board is really piggy end it didn't help that I didn't have any form or anything to put inside but I'm getting a new keyboard that should be better has hotspot and some cushion foam and stuff it seems like a pretty good keyboard and I got some milky yellow switches I'm gonna lube the first time in two weeks I'm pretty excited to get my keyboard that's a bit better but I'm still happy I was able to mod the 30$ board it was a pretty fun experience I can't wait to get in the more keyboard stuff in the future thank you Hipyo I can't wait to explore more of this hobby sorry for the little rant
any updates? I ordered a keyboard tools set to mod the Wooting 60HE I ordered recently and wanted to mod my Redragon board first to get a feel for things since I can mess up on it without worrying much now. Did you find it worth your time to mod your old board?
Would using something like dynamat in the bottom part of the keyboard help? like it is acoustic material, would think that would do something right
Hi I'm new to mechanical keyboards idk about much of mechanical keyboards but may i have some reccomendation which should I buy.

Can u do a review on the q1 from keychron
I have the Logitech G pro keyboard and it sounded very hollow, and guess what I did.
I opened it and added some foam material from a box of an ergo chair I got and trust me it did the trick now the keyboard sound way better less cheap and hollow.
Finally :DD
i have been waiting for this since yesterday lol
Big desk energy
watched this live and saw what pain u went through with the stabs
Can you use the thin foam wrap sheet from the kb box itself as a dampener? lol hopefully it'll be fine bec that's what i used since i didn't have any materials atm.

Do you have any good recommendations on a pbt keycaps set that has all the Mac function keys and control keys? I've found some but they are always all white sets.
Pimp My Keyboard (Signature Plastics) has good premium SA and DSA pbt sets that are always in stock and have a wide selection of colours.
If you're ok with pricy keycaps, they're a good choice.
is this worth doing in combination with a foam mod?
So great sounds.
Wow, I wasn't expecting there to be that big of a difference
