Q1: Why is it in competition the girls wear a cloth fabric skirt and not the traditional grass skirt?
Q2: How do the girls prevent "wardrobe malfunctions" swinging their hips so fast?
Interesting it's Tahitian Hula that's done in competitions and not Hawaiian. In Tahiti, Hawaii and on the mainland (Vegas, California...).:

Wtf are you talking about? No such thing as ''traditional grass'' skirt! It's called Mor'e, and it's made out of the fibers of the Hibiscus tree. It's not a skirt, it's just a piece of fabric called a pareo (sarong, lava lava etc). It's NOT HULA! HULA IS HAWAI'IAN!!! Hawai'i is illegally annexed by the USA, so an insult to call it mainland! Get eduacted!

Apologies for the person above with their comment but to answer your questions PROPERLY:
1)the reason why they use a fabric cloth instead of the traditional hatua (hip belt) and more skirt is because with the cloth the judges are able to determine each dancers hip shaking techniques and skill. In some competitions however I’ve seen some dancers (I think they’re juniors but I’m not sure) who dance with a more skirt or as you referred to as a grass skirt (which is not a bad thing).
      2) don’t get me wrong there have been certain occasions where a dancer has had a wardrobe malfunction, and the most common wardrobe malfunction is when the pareo begins to slide. This mainly happens with half-sized pareos because usually the material used (rayon) is lightweight and the intense shaking will sometimes shift the pareo around a bit. Many dancers tie their pareos to a certain extent where they personally know that the material won’t shift but everyone has their own method of tying their pareo.
In terms of the competition thing you are referring to, yes Tahitian Ori is very popular and has created competition in different parts of the world like Hawaii, Japan, San Diego, Mexico, France, L.A. Hawaiian hula is also popular with many hula competitions held globally too but nothing quite as extravagant as the Merrie Monarch Festival which is a prestigious event that hosts many Halau/Hula teams from across the Hawaiian islands and sometimes even groups from other parts of the USA and abroad.
