We used to have a local belly dance troupe here in my home town and the women were all shapes and sizes, and all equally lovely and talented in their own ways!!
After 20 years training, performing, and teaching middle eastern dance I can tell you all body types and all sorts of people flourish in these dances. When I started, I weughed 300 pounds and had ended an abusive situation. This dance helped heal me emotionally and physically.

This is NOT "gypsy" dancing. It is American Belly Dancing, as it has evolved. ZERO connection of any sort to the Romani. (And 'gypsy' is a hugely offensive form. The people are the Rom or the Romani.)

You do realize that belly dance itself is heavily influenced by gypies to begin with right? Egyptian Belly Dance is influenced by the Gawazi who were Dom not Rom from Europe. They were a Gypsy people who lived in Egypt. They were the founders of what is belly dance today.

Oh, now this is what I love about Arabic dance: three different women, three different body types, and all of them romanticized the exact same way by the camera, by the dance, and by the costuming
And it's about as authentic as what Hollywood made with the Arabic tales of 1001 nights when they made a film out of it. But - yes - it would be nice if the nerd filming this had led the camera properly. As it is now it's a nuisance and a pity!
Siri Hammond dance like language evolves and there is nothing that is purely original to anything that is still in existance today. Everything is a "bastardization " of something older. All religions, language, and culture pulls from multiple older influences. So abandon any purest thinking when you go into the world bc there is nothing original under the sun.

You do realize that belly dance itself is heavily influenced by gypies to begin with right? Egyptian Belly Dance is influenced by the Gawazi who were Dom not Rom from Europe. They were a Gypsy people who lived in Egypt. They were the founders of what is belly dance today.

And it's about as authentic as what Hollywood made with the Arabic tales of 1001 nights when they made a film out of it.

It's called ATS (American Tribal Style) and it has lot's of different influences from dances around the world. =)
It is a fusion style that blends Indian, Arabic and Spanish dance traditions - founded in San Francisco some decades ago now. :)
in other words a bastardization of three beautiful dance traditions that don't need to be degraded this way. Even the name makes me want to vomit.
