52 The Blanched Soldier from The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (1927) Audiobook

- One of only two short stories in the whole of the Sherlock canon narrated by Holmes and not Watson. (Apparently). It is from The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle's last collection of standalone adventures featuring the consulting detective. Watson is otherwise engaged in matrimony or some such pursuit leaving Holmes to relate this tale. It's not the most complicated of cases and Holmes barely stirs his grey matter to bring it to a conclusion. Its interest lies in Holmes comparing and contrasting his approach with Watson's in the documenting and/or embroidering of the adventure.
It was a little bit of a challenge to recall the general sound and tone of Sherlock Holmes who narrates much of the story. Usually the majority of the text is in Watson's narrative voice (which, dear listener, is actually my own - surprise, surprise - with a twist of Edwardian formality) so this was a little more of a stretch. Plus the usual winter cold heading chest-wards.
Anyway, this story has finally entered the public domain in the US (on New Year's Day, 2022), so it's good to publish the last few stories. All the other Sherlock tales in the public domain can be found on this channel, including the novels, plus many other works by Sir Arthur.

The story is read and produced by me, Greg Wagland, for Magpie Audio.
Happy New Year folks!
'The ideas of my friend Watson, though limited, are exceedingly pertinatious.' These words, the very first sentence of this story, immediately display Greg Wagland's talents and the reasons why he is without doubt one of the best tellers of Victorian authors tales, and especially Conan Doyle. There is a stylish but serious eloquence to his manner coupled with the faintest colouring of wry humour revealing just how much he relishes the language, the stories, the characters and the history and influences of this sceptered isle and its past dominions.
Alas I can only afford the Narrator Hydrator contribution! Nevertheless, three cheers and hats in the air for Greg! Surely soon to be a knight of the realm.
I came here to make a similar comment if I didn't see one... The nuance of his voice... The best Sherlock imo. (And supporting roles of course, his voice is far ranged and fantastic at it.)
It is the comments like yours that make Greg’s audiobooks even more precious! What a noble story telling master Greg is! Thank you for the deep-thinking comments!
Greg does amazing accents.
Pertinacious. An excellent word.
So did I.
per - through
tenere - hold
In good-people talk (not evil Roman) "holding through"
Brilliant. I recall Holmes once telling Watson that if he penned the stories, it would serve not as a form of entertainment, but as a guide on correctly applying Holmes’ techniques. Quite true that turned out to be.
Mr. Greg is in top of the public domain.!!!!! Thanks Mr. Greg or should I say Sherlock Holmes!!!!!!
Cheers PB!!!
Dear Greg, I really must thank you - your readings got me through 2021, I listened to them every single night. It was a personally difficult year, on top of the pandemic and associated trauma. So a thousand thanks dear Reader!
Me too. It's not just his greatly nuanced performance of the works, but the man that resides behind the voice that is such a grounding comfort. I'm certain Greg Waglund is a treasured friend to those who are his. Take care.

Absolutely. Same to you. :)
An incredible tale realy enjoyed listening to it.Superb narration 10/10
Omg yes! I'm so excited for this. The only collection I haven't read from.
Hope you liked it! Cheers Apprentice.
What a great way to start the new year. Thank you, Greg! Blessings and love to you and yours. 🧡❤️🤍
Thanks BB. Hope you have a Happy New Year!
I am a lifelong Holmes fan and i have found great joy and comfort with your videos. You sounded perfect in this, as you always do, even with the character perspective change and your being sick (which no one would ever notice, even with your mentioning!).
You are a complete treasure for supplying this, and i thank you immensley for your efforts!! You have made it that now i only think of your voice for both Watson AND Holmes.
Thank You Mr. Wagland!
in my opinion you ARE Sherlock Holmes--and I love your Watson and Lastrade and all the other great voices you do--I think of the goose dealer in ‘Blue Carbuncle’ or the many varied voices in ‘6 Napoleons’--just wonderful. Your voice had been part of the soundtrack of my life in the last year or two. Many Thanks
Thank you very much, John. I'm delighted to hear it. Ah yes, the goose dealer -that rings a dim and distant bell - must go back and have a listen! Cheers.
The best thing to do at midnight is to listen to a good book
Another Sherlock Holmes! This is one of my favorites and I always wondered why you had overlooked this one; it never occurred to me that it wasn't yet in the public domain. Brilliant! Thank you!
Thank you Greg. I've been waiting a year to hear this. Three more on the way this year right and two more in 2023 if I'm not mistaken.
If told by Dr. Watson, we would have had a bit more drama, color and some explanation whether the soldier recovered, resumed his friendshipt and lived a normal and happy life.
Yes!
I love happy endings! Great one from Sherlock's perspective.
Yes. One more to come - The Lion's Mane.
So true. It's great hearing Wagland's 'Sherlock' speaking about Watson, as we're so used to the opposite. Really changes it up. Even moreso than when I read it myself. 🖤
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio You spoil us! 🤩
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Boy this is like Christmas! Thanks so much Greg, your reading is really amazing, and has put me to sleep on many a restless night, but I'm always wide awake for a new story whenever you post one.
I would be glad if you watch my channel.
Great twist on the usual storytelling method. Expertly performed as always.
Thanks Mike.
I binged all of your Sherlock videos and thought that was it. Boy was I happy to see that you have some new uploads. I wish Doyle could write us a few more Sherlock stories, they're just sooooo good.
Your narration is top notch. It's exactly how Holmes sounds in my head. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world.
I counted down not to hear Big Ben, but to hear Sherlock Holmes. Happy New Year 🥳 to all
Ha!
Yes, across the pond I wasn't watching the ball in Times Square. I was fully awaiting this story! And a Happy New Year to you ☺️🎉

Ta, Jay!

Thanks Liz.
What a lovely New Year surprise - a SH story I haven't come across before! Thank you so much!
Hope you enjoyed it!
Oooh, saving this one for before bed tonight. Greg Wagland bringing in the New Year feels right!
Glad to hear it!
What a great New Year's Eve gift! I have yet to hear the story but I already love it because Dr. Watson and my favorite Detective are back! Thank you, Greg!
No Doctor Watson I'm afraid.
Thank you for a great reading of a masterful story, Greg. Only Sir Arthur could write something so surprising and touching, and to think that This was "written" by Sherlock himself!
These readings by Greg Wagland are very well done. I had not yet encountered some of these stories in print, and have read numerous of the Holmes adventures in print, numerous times. So it's great to find some new Holmes stories via these Magpie audio books on You Tube. Conan Doyle was a literary genius, like Shakespeare, like Dickens; and that's why we continue to read Doyle and reprint his works and make new films of them, century after century. Well done Greg Wagland and Magpie Audio.
Many thanks!
Another masterpiece of narration, Greg. Wishing you the best for the new year and beyond.
Thanks Montana.
Best narrator ever.
Definitely these stories have the best narration I have heard on audiobooks! Well done!
Great narration, Mr. Greg. Congratulations.

These have helped me relax and fall asleep countless times
The sheer nuance of your voice sir in the first three minutes. You capture and convey the essence of these characters very well. In fact the best narration wise. .. You bring Doyale's SH n Watson to life so well!
What a pleasure! Thank you Mr. Wagland, and Happy New Year! 🍾🎉
What an excellent start to 2022....thanks Greg, you're a star sir⭐⭐

I'm confused....why have I never heard of this story from the SH epic line up??? I thought I was going to fall over when I saw you had posted this recording. Like a miracle occurred 😂😅. Amazing, thank you.
Same here I thought I had heard them all
Happy new year! Thank you for a new recording, I have worn all the others out!
Simply perfect narration. An absolute joy to behold. Wagland is a true master,
Thank you for a great gift to start the year--I love these stories and your reading!
The Blanched Soldier is one of the unique tellings, for Holmes himself is narrating, describing events, and throwing his own opinions on cases and on Watson that the good doctor doesn't really reveal himself.
Happy New Year!! 🎊 a new Holmes story 👏🏻🎉 Thank you Greg, I am so excited for this! I can’t believe it’s been 3 years since I found your channel. These recordings have been with me through a multitude of changes and now here we are the first day of 2022.
Thanks Felene. Wishing you a great 2022!

Excellent! I was waiting these last 6 you couldn't do before. Now I can listen to your audio reading of the Holmes canon or Derek Jacobi's!
Another excellent piece of work of the creator of SH and so from its' narrator ! Eagerly awaited for 'The Lion's Mane' and 'The Three Gables'.
Was win about you after the holidays. Just went through and found three new ones. Notification was even on...

Happy new year to you too!
Been waiting on this... Thanks so damn much!
Cheers Gary.
Brilliant. Just made my day. Happy New Year everyone!
Happy New Year Gwen.
Ooooh, lovely! You pull off narrating in Holmes’ voice
beautifully. Cold or no!
Perhaps understandably, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle grew weary of Holmes. But, I never do.
Wonderful as always, Mr. Wagland, sir! Very impressed that you could pull off your distinctive Holmesian narration to perfection with a chest cold. Feel better and thank you for such a lovely New Year's surprise!
Happy new year and sending my blessings to anyone reading this❤️
Thank you! Happy New Year to you too! 😊
