Thank you for this comparison. Yes, we know it cannot be perfectly reliable, but the results make sense. After many years monitoring my Axe-FX through JBL EON's, I am going to switch to a L6 Powercab 112.
Thanks for this great comparison video. To my ears (and through prevalent YT compression), the PowerCab sounds like a guitar cab. I could swear that it sounded like a mic-ed amp cab, rather than an FRFR (one of its modes). So PC, hands down in this case. Thanks!
EQ the FRFR and you'll have the same sound as the power cab. I use the Alto TS212 and it reproduces my 4x12 and my 2x12 with V30's perfectly. Take your time and for $150.00 you get a great sound from it. $699.00 for the power cab is a bit much. Great video my man. Love the T-Shirt as well. keep up the great work!
Hi Kirk, could you advise on how to connect the a POD HD500X to an Alto speaker like yours, if I need something in between to get the real modelling sound from the pedal? ...Considering HD500X doesnt have the IRs feature and that the best way to use the full potential of this pedal is with direct connection and not through an amp (like using fx return).
@@RicardoDLF if the hd500 allows you to switch off its non-IR speaker SIM , put a IR loader like stuff mooer does. If I remember correctly you have XLR line out .
Thank you for the vid. In the comparison I liked the clean with the L6, and the overdrive through the Eon... just my .02 cents :). I have an Epiphone Black Beauty, which I bought so I could retire my 1970 Custom Gibson Sunburst (to save wear and tear on it), and I run it through a L6 Helix and JBL 10" Eon (for monitoring purposes) - then on to FOH. I've never had a problem getting whatever sound/tone I wanted with this setup, to be honest. I would imagine the Kemper is the same... as with the Helix - it just takes a little tweaking. I've actually had guys from other bands come up to me and compliment my tone, while nodding towards our other guitar players Marshall JVM 410c. They were completely dumbfounded when I showed them what I was actually using lol.
The L6 speaker modeling isn't there yet. It's an interesting idea that needs a bit more time and refinement. People knock the L6 PC+ because it's not truly full-range. Of course. Doesn't need to be, it's a guitar system. It's not for synths. Most users of modelers (who know what they're doing) roll the low frequency spectrum down to ~80-200Hz, and the highs down to ~5-10kHz in their Cab emulations or in the Output, anyway. That is where the guitar lives. It doesn't need full-range. Though it does have a wider range than a normal guitar speaker, which is why reverbs and effects sound so much better through extended-range modeling systems.
Interesting comparison. I would really like to try a Powercab, but 90% of the time I run direct to FOH. On stage I'm either using a wedge or IEMs. On the occasion I need an amp I've got a pair of Behringer PA speakers with 12's (talk about not your best solution) that get the job done once I eq out the woofy bottom end. I do have an amp but it's been collecting dust for years now. So as much as I want to try the Powercab I'm just not sure I need it. I tried a Tech 21 power engine once but sent it back. I guess I've played in FRFR mode for so long it's just what I prefer. I look forward to hearing your thoughts after you've used it for a while.
This answered the question that I had. The question that I had with all FRFR speakers was whether they truly were all the same and flat. They’re not. With that being said, why would I switch from anything that I have if anything I switch to I’m going to have to alter my Settings to get what I want anyway. I might as well just keep the solid-state amp that I’m running through
It’s definitely not that simple. Frfr are all unique, yes, but they DO give you a tone 90% true to the model. Nothing I can do with 4cm gets me to that. It always sounds like my amp though with varying degrees of strange. I tried all the options except a true flat powercab. I wanna try that next, and some 12” studio monitors. I hear they’re dope for this,and possibly the best. PA speakers aren’t the way to amp in the room feel at all. They’re too fucking loud. Not pleasant.
So listening to this using iPhone and earphones the power cab has more bottom end and is obviously going to sound more like an amp in the room. However, the FRFR speaker is doing a decent job imho, and in a full band mix would cut through just fine. If your playing alone then you’ll benefit from the fuller sound of the power cab. Either way I like the power cab, just not sure I’m willing to drop £500 gbp on one when I have an EV 12” FRFR ?
Picked up a Kemper and the Mission Engineering Gemini2. Also have a Peavey 6505+112. The Kemper and Gem2 pretty much replaced the Peavey. Have bunch of high gain DI profiles and regular profiles from Choptones. Prefer the DI profiles more when paired with the return input of the Peavey. The Gem2 sounds kinda buzzy where the Peavey (which I threw a V30 in) has more of growl sound to it. More of a metal guy here. So I think the whole FRFR speaker thing is bunch of hooie. You would think all FRFR speakers would sound similar, where they clearly don't. The cleans sound good thru the Gem2. Still kinda new to the Kemper, but it seems like the FRFRs are going to add their own color to the sound anyway. So one may as well get a guitar cab they like and use DI profiles instead of a profile with a cab in it as part of the complete profile.
Problem is that the speaker itself will change the tone quite a lot... the FRFR clearly is more middy whereas the PowerCab is fuller.... Almost like comparing a V30 vs a G12h30... Thanks for this review though, I really am looking for more shootouts of this kind
So does anybody know if i can get passive speakers for my guitar am modeler? Is the veneral rule of thumb that you must get powered speakers to run a modeler or does the modeler have enough power to run a passive speaker? Icant find a concise answer,,, like if i ran a helix into a stereo rig but didnt want to buy frfr speakers, could i buy 2 passive PA'S or does the speaker have to be active because the helix wont power the speaker, thanks
Speaker modelling, it doesn't do Cabinet modelling. It is basically like being able to swap out different "speakers" with the push of a button. I LOVE MY PC+
No worries, and I hope I didnt come across as an ass saying that. I just know that over on the FB forums people at time cannot get their brains around the fact it is NOT trying to emulate different cabs, what it does is emulate different speakers (that are being swapped in and out of the same cab). Regardless, excellent video/demo, I have already shared it within the FB groups I am with from a Helix side as well as the PC side.

I may be a little bit bias on my opinion because I own the power cab 112 however I did the whole rewind and fast forward back and forth over and over and the eon just has a breakup that’s not as pleasing to my ears and that’s in frfr mode.... I have also come to find that I really enjoy the two blue modes of the power cab especially the second one I think it’s the vox speaker emulation and that’s a really nice mate to the Revv models that the helix offer which was a huge surprise to me
I recently purchased the Line6 Powercab 112. After turning it on I've noticed allot white noise/hiss coming out the speaker. Is this normal? I don’t have experience with “normal” amps or cabs. I play my Helix LT trough the studio monitors…
Probably your pickups are picking up an interference from lights, computer, or a computer screen. I cannot play with my PC on, because it produce a lot of electromagnetic interference, that even humbuckers are not completely immune to. To see if this is your problem, try moving around with your guitar to identify a source. The noise should be lower with humbuckers, and with a noise-cancelling in-between position if you have middle RWRP single coils. You can also use an input threshold gate in your Helix, but it is always better to remove source of the interference, if possible. That is in your studio of course, not while gigging.
Thanks for answering. The Powercab has this hiss/white noise constantly. Even when not connected to Helix, just turned on and standing alone. My power source should be Ok; I never had any issues with any devices. I returned Powercab and ordered another one from other shop. It makes exactly the same hiss/white noise as fist one. So I assume this is normal. Maybe I’m too sensitive :) I showed Powercab to one Friend, and he said that he thinks his white noise is normal...his Fender Blues Junior has the same of white noise. But if I compare the Powercab to my Studio Monitors Yamaha SH 7, Powercab has like 10 times more hiss noise... So I don’t now that to think :( That do you think?
I've switched from tube amps to modelers few weeks ago. I'm true tube amps lover, but POD HD Pro gives me everything, sounds good thru REAL guitar cab (and real guitar speaker). I don't like any FRFR, they always sounds so processed/compressed/thin. I want to hear my amp, my guitar thru GUITAR SPEAKER, not 'sound image of guitar speaker picked up by microphone'. I just want speaker, not speaker + mic. If You still have to carry a cab, why just not bring up a cab with classic guitar speaker?
I hope you realize that the main reason it sounds different is because of each units housing. One is plastic and the other is wood. Plastic units will always sound boomy on low end and muffled on highs.
@@TimHeerebout there are comparisons all over of various plastic speaker (frfr) cabinets compared to speakers with birch wood cabinets. It was found that the materials make a huge difference. For instance guitars made out of different tone woods also have different tonal characteristics. If you compare different plastic housed speakers you are correct about the design makes a difference. But I watched many videos and also compared various plastic housed speakers to wood cabinets to try and save some money. But in the end I found that if you want better live tone, a speaker in a wood cabinet was the way to go. Check out the youtube channel Tone Wars. He did a great comparison with different guitar players.
I live in Portland, Oregon and only Guitar Center has any selection and I've *never* seen the Powercab, Friedman, or any other "modeler intended" FRFR amp/cab anywhere. All they have are Altos, EV, JBL, QSC and their Harbinger house brand PA monitors. It's tough to decide because all the YT videos of FRFR cabs I've seen leave much to be desired.
Why would anyone want a power cab with the helix. When they model these amplifiers they tried to recreate the exact sounds of these amplifiers going through high quality very flat speakers like PA speakers or monitors not guitar cabinets!! the more accurate the PA speaker or monitor you have the more accurate the sound you're going to get!! it's supposed to be an amp modeler that gives you the sound of everything together.. It's supposed to be so you don't have to carry around heavy cabinets and amplifiers.. You're better off buying a high quality lightweight PA speaker than a power cab.. because then you can run everything through the PA. Like a bass player, a singer, a keyboard anything!! The PA speakers seem to be much lighter, and much louder!! And most likely if you're going on the road playing out Open Mic or something you going to be plugging into someone else's PA speaker just mess with your global settings. that's what I love about the Helix floor and got rid of rack systems. Everything is all in one you now can get the sound of a marshall stack or any stack that you used to have any tube amp going right through a PA system or a powered PA speaker. No need for a powered cabinet anymore big heavy and bulky.. I CAN'T BELIEVE THE SOUND I GET OUT OF THE HELIX WITH AN 8-IN QSC THOUSAND WATT SPEAKER THAT JUST CAME OUT COUPLE YEARS AGO!!! IT SOUNDS LIKE A MARSHALL HALF STACK WHEN IT'S BEING USED AS A MONITOR. Why carry around a heavy bulky stuff when you get the Helix is defeating the purpose. If that's the case I'll be lugging around my big custom 50 watt tube amp head and cabinet that I built.. the reason why I got the Helix is so I didn't have to do that anymore in a lot of different situations I just don't get it. I guess they just found a way to sell people more stuff. 🤣 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑
I am looking at a powercab 112 active, it must be that one, and It costs 1350 dollars in my country. Man that is a lot, that is like 3 times more expensive than my fender 2 x 60 w. I am thinking more of a Headrush 108 for my poor gt10 (like 400 dollars here)
@@Axewarriorz yes man, in my country (ARG) everything that is imported costs a lot. It's like CARS for example, you hear they cost 2000 USD, 4000 USD, or any price but all those amounts translated to our local currency really costs a lot of money. In the 90s 1 dollar costed 1 peso, in 2001 inflation started and now 1 dollar costs 80 pesos, and everything changes so hard that in september 1 dollar was 42 pesos. Then it increased to 60 in september and now it is 80 or so.
The bottom line is, you put crap into anything you get the same crap out at minimum, often it's worse actually, the secret is a good frfr cab will still sound like shit if the incoming is set incorrectly initially, a crappy modeller can only be slightly improved if the output is set to suit the intended cab as frfr only if the setting has been made available. I use a modeller myself that in a blind test has proven it murders most conventional guitar amps...including a half a dozen costly brands and their cabs....it's all about the output on the modeller being set correctly first, otherwise you are re-amping and making a dreadful audio mess
There's no way that the power cab will sound good as a QSC speaker with an amp modeler, it won't be as loud, and most likely like me I will be singing out of the speaker, putting base guitar and other things through the speaker and that power cab will not sound as good not even close with all that going through it.. The whole point is to get rid of the big bulky cabinets going through PA speakers to simulate and model having those big bulky cabinets going backwards with technology doesn't make any sense they just found something else to sell people it just makes me laugh..

The base powercab is 499 the Plus model is 649 and not really worth it imo.

Seems like with straight up guitar amplification it really reveals the "plastic box resonance" of these giant monitors.
My frfr108 is very dark sounding ,so looking for something else powercab 112 maybe ,any thoughts?

I don't think the Helix can power any type of speaker. It needs to be connected to active speakers.

I find all pa cabs make an electric guitar sound like an acoustic. You’d need to re-eq for more mid on the pa cab

You're better off buying a high quality lightweight PA speaker than a power cab.. because then you can run everything through the PA. Like a bass player, a singer, a keyboard anything!! The PA speakers seem to be much lighter, and much louder!!
And most likely if you're going on the road playing out Open Mic or something you going to be plugging into someone else's PA speaker just mess with your global settings.
that's what I love about the Helix floor and got rid of rack systems.
Everything is all in one you now can get the sound of a marshall stack or any stack that you used to have any tube amp going right through a PA system or a powered PA speaker.
No need for a powered cabinet anymore big heavy and bulky..
I CAN'T BELIEVE THE SOUND I GET OUT OF THE HELIX WITH AN 8-IN QSC THOUSAND WATT SPEAKER THAT JUST CAME OUT COUPLE YEARS AGO!!! IT SOUNDS LIKE A MARSHALL HALF STACK WHEN IT'S BEING USED AS A MONITOR.
Why carry around a heavy bulky stuff when you get the Helix is defeating the purpose.
If that's the case I'll be lugging around my big custom 50 watt tube amp head and cabinet that I built..
the reason why I got the Helix is so I didn't have to do that anymore in a lot of different situations I just don't get it.
I guess they just found a way to sell people more stuff.

I am looking at a powercab 112 active, it must be that one, and It costs 1350 dollars in my country. Man that is a lot, that is like 3 times more expensive than my fender 2 x 60 w.
I am thinking more of a Headrush 108 for my poor gt10 (like 400 dollars here)

@@Axewarriorz yes man, in my country (ARG) everything that is imported costs a lot. It's like CARS for example, you hear they cost 2000 USD, 4000 USD, or any price but all those amounts translated to our local currency really costs a lot of money. In the 90s 1 dollar costed 1 peso, in 2001 inflation started and now 1 dollar costs 80 pesos, and everything changes so hard that in september 1 dollar was 42 pesos. Then it increased to 60 in september and now it is 80 or so.

The bottom line is, you put crap into anything you get the same crap out at minimum, often it's worse actually, the secret is a good frfr cab will still sound like shit if the incoming is set incorrectly initially, a crappy modeller can only be slightly improved if the output is set to suit the intended cab as frfr only if the setting has been made available.
I use a modeller myself that in a blind test has proven it murders most conventional guitar amps...including a half a dozen costly brands and their cabs....it's all about the output on the modeller being set correctly first, otherwise you are re-amping and making a dreadful audio mess

There's no way that the power cab will sound good as a QSC speaker with an amp modeler, it won't be as loud, and most likely like me I will be singing out of the speaker, putting base guitar and other things through the speaker and that power cab will not sound as good not even close with all that going through it..
The whole point is to get rid of the big bulky cabinets going through PA speakers to simulate and model having those big bulky cabinets going backwards with technology doesn't make any sense they just found something else to sell people it just makes me laugh..
