Resoling Red Wing Chukka Boots with Vibram | Have I Made a Mistake?

- Controversial, but I think I may have ruined my Red Wing Chukka boots. I went and had a Vibram Christy cut sole on them and boy do they look weird! This is meant to be an 'off-white' colour but to me they look bright white.
What do you think? Lesson learnt I guess.

I think they will look cool with a little wear.
I get what you’re saying, but I think this is a case of shock factor - the sole is obviously new while the boots are worn - so there’s that sudden juxtaposition that wasn’t there before. But I think that you’ll feel differently about them once there is a bit of wear on them and they aren’t so clean looking, and no one else will notice in the meantime.
Plus it’s a waste to get them resold when you don’t really need to - though of course if it bugs you so much that you’re not wearing them at all then that’s a different story…
I think they look pretty smart. A few weeks of use and they will look fine.
Good on you for showing some buyers remorse, we all do it. I’m sure they’re darker now, but cleaning the sides with yellow saddle soap will definitely stain them darker, as well as being a really good first step in cleaning them. I sent my chukas off to the recommended Red Wing shop/repairers and there were machine spoke marks left on the side of the sole, disappointingly.
Love them!!! ❤❤❤ Will definitely go with the off white vibram sole when I will resole my redwing 875 down the line 😎😎😎
Looks great! Awesome resole!
I've got a pair of those, was thinking about going with a doctor sole supergrip fullsole with leather midsole
Take them to a shoe repair place and see if they can dye the white sides of the soles to some color you deem more suitable. However, the dye may need to be occasionally renewed.
As a person that has trouble finding shoes that are comfortable, I don't care much how they look as long as they are within some normal range. I would also say they are going to discolor in use.
You may be overthinking it a bit, Cameron. They have a very original look to them, and the contrast really jumps out. I think they look dope.
They look fresh!
Like many other comments have stated, they will wear down and look more cohesive. It just looks odd at first because the contrast is too bizarre - like brand new tires & chrome rims on a classic Ford pickup.
They look great! Is this sole more comfortable?
They look great imo! In 3 months of wear they'll look like they came with the soles! shock factor
i like them. Can you post up an update on how they are wearing?
Dude these are fine! Once they wear in you will love them! They will be super comfortable. They are just new and different. Love the channel! ✌️
Cheers Billy. I've had time to get used to them now. I think it was the initial shock. Appreciate the comments man. Thanks for watching
@@CameronO thanks C. I didn't realize all the other comments said the same thing! You should show them again after they get worn in! Peace Cam!
I like 'em even now! But as yuh know, nothing looks its best fresh out of the shop, and they'll become truly yours again as you beat 'em up - just like the leather on the boots, or a good pair of jeans! I look forward to the follow up!
Would have gone black over white. Christy sole always a shocker IMO. THAT said, rub some dirt on them, and you'll be fine. Defo not ruined.
Personally I love the sole that the boots come with, when it come time for me to resole, I'll be looking for the same ones to be applied. It may cost me an arm and a leg to do, from down here in Australia, but I think it'll be worth it.
I think they look good, I think the contrast is what’s throwing you off like you said. I say rock them non stop for at least three months and then see if you like them now or you’d rather resole them and give us an update video haha
Just got my 875's back from a resole. I opted for a black Christie to replace the worn out white one.
Got to say I really like them. I think the black suits them better, especially as the leather over time has darkened. Once yours wear in and pic up some drit and grime, they should look fine. At the moment they are like a tooth paste commercial ' eg very bright'.
I’m thinking of doing the same to my 875’s. I think it would look great with the black Christie soles.
It looks great. Just wear it, and wait for it to blend.
It’s just the contrast between old and new. Take them for a walk in the woods, the foam will absorb a bit of the grime and discolour over time like the old ones did. I think even you went and dyed them a little to make them more yellow it would still look jarring because they’re new. With a bit of time they will wear in and I think you’ll be happy with the deeper tread in the long run too, always find mine to be a little slippy on mud.
100% i totally forgot my old ones i once took to Iceland and wore them in the black volcanic ash (don't ask hah) and believe it or not volcanic ash doesn't come off Red Wing soles.. who knew! So i've been used to darker, dirty stained soles for years. So i think these will be fine.
I did the exact same thing, but my new soles were not so super white. After a few wears I got used the more chunky profile. Stick with them; they will be okay
Is the Christy cut sole only in uk? I can only find the regular Christy sole option.
update?
I imagine the look is a little jarring to you because of the contrast to what they looked like before. I think once you start wearing them, you really won't think too much about it. I find that brand new perfectly clean wedge soles often look a little too bright and pristine, especially on a resole but once they're a little dirty and broken in, they'll look great.
Funny, I like them better now than before 🤩
Keep wearing them and put the time in. They will turn out nice. I think you will like them as time passes.
I love ‘em
What leather did they start out as? If R&T, may have ruined the leather too
Awesome another Aussie reviewer:). What do u do in the UK mate? Love the videos
Hey mate, who are the other Aussie reviewers? We are few and far between hah
Ah bro, that look fine. i understand what you're saying but they'll soon bed in.
I think they look great, they will look really good after a few weeks
They have come around on me im not going to lie!
I think the outsole is too thick for a chukka. It makes the chukka look like something from Doc Martens.
They look great…..give it a chance. I’d go for it.
you can try white laces kind of David Backham style)
Once the new sole gets some wear they’ll look much better.
How do they look like now? Would love to see how these soles have held up. Would you please post an update on these?
Coming soon. Beat up a little and look just fine now.
@@CameronO I want to see them now.
Im confused. Redwing uses vibram through out the range but as a big buyer they get to have they're logo on them. I don't think you went off the trail much. They are different profile and it makes them look different. I like it personally and see potential of them looking natural with ware
Update on the soles?
Have they grown on you, look better now they have been worn?
Filmed a 5min update but it turned out rubbish. Will do it again and share. They are looking nice and filthy now hah
Update!
How are they now after half a year use?
Not as striking white. They are slowly coming around :) Super comfortable. Though as it's been summer I haven't worn anything remotely like boots since about June!
Yes, they look in my opinion bad. In your situation I will just use them with the white soles and chose a cream or brown ones next time. Great video.
I don’t hate them. I’d just wear them, but I understand your criticism.
I think they look good
These look great! They also do look off white to me. It's the contrast between the black upper that makes them look just straight white.
You are right, i've checked em against some straight white sneakers and they are a bit creamy
With some wear its gonna look awesome :)
I'm sure once they get a bit dirty they'll look much better. Coffee-dying has also been a big trend in the UA-cam sneaker space - maybe try that on the sole to give it that cream/off-white hue?
I second this! Dip the soles in a batch of coffee-dyeing.
Agree lads stay tuned! At least i'll have this vid to compare to one day hah
@@CameronO Looking forward to the results!
Bro, they look fine. Rock them with pride!
They are coming along nicely actually. I was jumped the gun a bit with my fears hah
As others are saying they look good mate)
Let your friend who wore them in Iceland wear them until the soles look the way you want! I'd like to wear them too!!
haha good idea. Luckily they are getting nice and beat up now :)
I’ve never liked the white sole on shoes even when new due to the contrast. Maybe purposely go get them grimey and it will look better? Even a new version of your old sole would likely have caused a shock.
My guess , 7mos later , is that 1-2 months of really walking around and mucking them up , and they’d be perfect.
I think they look fine... it's only funny because the sole is new and the boot is worn.
I think they look good. I don’t mind them. They wear out quick anyways
Yeah, they will be roughed up in no time.
Keep them, them resole with thinner outsoles
Wear them in a bit. I'm sure they'll look great with a little time
this dude is the rugged form of Daniel Simmons.
haha Daniel has some great vids.
First time here… great outsole but the whiteness is too much and it contrasts the patina… for my liking… otherwise thanks for uploading!
I know personally my OCD would be knawing at me to send them back to Redwing and have them done 'properly' but that's just me.. Otherwise they'd stay in my wardrobe unworn.
I’m high as fk I thought the thumbnail was of man holding big funny shape egg with yoke in middle and evberthing
hahah man this comment killed me! cheers man!
Worst comes to worse, have a cobbler sand it down and add a rubber cover.
yeah good point. I think it's an easy fix if i was to want to change it
NGL... those look goofy... id get them redone again...
Bit chunky
Just wear them when no one is around to rough them up
they look good to me…
They look sharp to me man. They're supposed to look good. Of course they're going to get dirty. Enjoy them why they look sharp. Polish them up. Enjoy your new shoes
Resole
Just get them a little dirty and you’ll be fine man
Those are bone white take them back
They look wrong. The whole design of the RW Chukka is lost.
