    The guitar he switched to was named Charley after his friend mentioned in other comments. The beat up one in Number One. I read Stevie was talking about South Africa. He went into rehab in the fall of 1986 at the same time as his bassist Tommy Shannon also his best friend. He helped many people quietly into sobriety. This was before rehab but afterwards his first statement was "I want to thank God that I am alive and well enough to be with you tonight." He was a quiet follower of Christ but didn't push it Humble and gentle man ferocious on stage.

    The studio version is just as beautiful. There is a part of the riff that he does a slight pause, on the guitar, almost like taking a breath musically, and the base comes in. I love this song for that alone.

    Been a huge fan since the 80’s and have been so very fortunate to have see him perform TWICE! The day he was killed was one of the darkest days of my life, it damaged my soul. I’m 53 and have seen my share of dark days as we all have of course but yeah, it’s right there with my father passing away when I was 19. BUT, I now through UA-cam get to watch others discover the voodoo he did so well and I love watching y’all’s reactions. It’s also special in it’s own right. ✌️

    When you see him bend down he is adjusting his guitar pedals as he did in a lot of his performances... he was a tone seeker, always looking for that special tone that a guitar player has in their head also adjusting his amps.

    Just subscribed cuz you came right back bringing Stevie Ray with you! I told you you should get comfortable in the best rabbit hole ever! This is one of my favorite performances from him. It has everything and then some. He wrote this song for his good friend Charlie Wirz, a Dallas guitar shop owner, after he passed suddenly. So lots of extra emotion in this song. For the best down and dirty blues performances, check out him and Johnny Copeland doing Tin Pan Alley. He will continue to blow your mind🤯🤯🤯in a good way! Thanks for getting back to Stevie so quickly. I have the bell on for ya!

    I liked your comment about his "3rd arm". The first 30 seconds of the first time I had watched him I was struck by the intimate relationship he had with his guitar. You mentioned him making it scream. When asked why he refers to his #1 guitar as his first wife he said it was because it screamed for him not at him😉. He could make sounds that I have never heard a guitar make before but guitars were helpless against him.
    You should know he never drops anything to pick up. He is adjusting his foot pedals. He has an incredible ear and knows exactly the sound he wants. He never learned to read music, he taught himself to play by listening to records.

    Story on the guitar switch from his "Red" Strat -- Stevie always played Live Without You on the "Charley" guitar (the white Strat-style danelectro guitar Charley Wirz built for him) because Life Without You is written about Charley Wirz, a dear friend and mentor to Stevie. Charley died suddenly of a heart attack and this song is Stevie sending a message to his friend "How have you been? We all have missed you and the way you grin." After Stevie's death, all his fans see Life Without You as their feelings about Stevie.

    Hey there D. I've got a few nuggets regarding this song, the guitar and the reasons for this song. A dear friend of Stevie Rays' was named "Charlie." Charlie and Stevie Ray were true friends for quite a while too. Well Charlie became ill and passed away, which is the driving force behind this song that Stevie Ray wrote for Charlie and you can see how heart felt he is while performing this song too. Well, Charlie built Stevie Ray a Guitar by hand. It is White and has some personal things painted and written on the back of the Guitar but nthe only way that anyone can see this is if Stevie Ray plays this guitar behind his back. So this is where he got the inspiration to teach himself to play behind his back. To top all of that off, this guitar is named "Charlie" too. So keep some of this in mind as you watch this performance, as you are now one of a very few that know all of this, about that.
    Notice that nhe starts out playing a Brown Guitar but the next thing you know, he's then playing a Wjhite Guitar (Charlie). Enjoy, my friend... Cheers...

  • @masterwoods6586

    Some context for u. Him looking to the side at three beginning was a look to his guitar guy for a different guitar. They swapped out the red one for the white one. Three white one was a gift from a friend who was also a music store owner. When the friend died, srv wrote this song for him, and always played this song with the white guitar. 2, when he reached to the floor, he is adjusting equipment, 3 at rhe end when he was playing with his teeth, he lost s tooth. Read his lips afterward, and u can see him looking all around for it.

  • @vincentvancraig
    @vincentvancraig 2 роки тому +1

    I think when he bent down, he adjust the knob on the floor-pedal, cuz u can hear the guitar, in unison, go into much heavier distortion, or gain, or whatever the word is....listen for obvious once u know....I’m a musician, but my ear sucks, but it doesn’t suck THAT bad, the gain/distortion goes WAY up, it changes drastically exactly in that moment

    In the beginning, he changes from a red Fender Stratocaster to a White custom Strat. When he bent down, he was adjusting one of his effects boxes. Maybe his Wah Wah or most likely his Tube Screamer. You can't tell from the video. He did this all the time. Watch "Voodoo Chile" at Austin City Limits 1989. He makes adjustments twice.

    • @stanandnila
      @stanandnila 2 роки тому

      @@claireburling8547 He didn't drop a pick. He was adjusting one of his effect boxes. If he did not have picks attached to his microphone stand, as in this video, he keeps spares on top of his amps. If he dropped a pick, he would play without one until he could grab one off his microphone stand or walk over to his amps and grab one. NO guitarist would ever attempt to pick up a dropped pick while playing. Try picking up a flat piece of plastic the size of a pick off of a flat floor and at the same time, keep playing. Impossible. He would play without a pick until he could get an other one.

Like in Voodoo Chile, he reaches straight down and is back up in about a second. But when he uses the pedal to get the effect, he sticks his leg forward some to work the pedal.
