  • West Midlands Trains Train Fleet/Rolling Stock. West Midlands Trains (LM) is a train operating company in Great Britain which includes 2 brands of service, London Northwestern Railway (LNR) and West Midlands Railway (WMR).
London Northwestern operate services out of London Euston along the West Coast Main Line (WCML) as suburban and outer suburban services including regional slower services to further destinations such as Birmingham New Street and Crewe (via Trent Valley) along with shorter routes to Northampton, Milton Keynes Central and Watford Junction. LNR also operate a Birmingham to Liverpool service as well as the Marston Vale (Bedford to Bletchley) and Abbey line (St Albans Abbey to Watford Junction) branch lines.
West Midlands Railway operate services centred on Birmingham out of both New Street and Moor Street. WMR operate longer routes to Hereford and Shrewsbury as well as to Rugeley Trent Valley along with local routes on the Cross City line (Lichfield Trent Valley to Redditch/Bromsgrove) and on the Snow Hill Lines to Worcester, Kidderminster, Stourbridge Junction, Whitlocks End, Dorridge and Stratford-upon-Avon. WMR also operate the NUCKLE (Nuneaton to Leamington Spa via Coventry) and the Stourbridge Town branch line.
This video shows the current train fleet (June 2023) along with the future rolling stock and past rolling stock for this operator.
London Northwestern currently operate a fleet of class 350 Desiro in 4 sub classes. These trains have 2+2 or 3+2 seating throughout and operate all LNR services. LNR have previously operated class 319 of which the last few are currently leaving the operator and class 230 D Trains on the Marson Vale line. In the future 3 class 150 Sprinter from Northern will be joining LNR along with 36 new class 730/2 Aventra trains which will replace the class 350/2.
West Midlands Railway currently operate 4 sub classes of class 172 Turbostar on unelectrified Snow Hill routes which have 2+2 seating. The new class 196 CAF Civity have replaced the class 170 Turbostar trains. The class 323 with 2+3 seating will be replaced by the class 730/0 Aventra trains. In the past class 150 and class 153 Sprinter have been used. WMR also operate 2 People Mover class 139 units.
With the existing and past West Midlands Trains train fleet/rolling stock units have interworked between LNR and WMR however once all the new trains are in service there will be a more limited overlap between the LNR and WMR trains fleets since the class 730 order was changed towards providing fewer LNR branded 5 carriage units and more WMR branded 3 carriage units.
The train fleet information is correct as possible of June 2023 and future train fleet dates are based for the planned introduction for passenger services. Past Train Fleet is based on when the current West Midlands Trains franchise has been in operation.

Now that there will be more WMR class 730 than LNR class 730 I hope they allow the LNR units to operate all Trent Valley services so that this route can have 10 carriages on all services which is really needed on this very busy route.

West Midlands Trains own LNWR they are the same company as stated on some of the LNWR trains so the only difference is the livery

The 730 should be a nice improvement to a 350/2 as it will mean no more 3+2 seating.
It is interesting that LNWR will be getting 150 on the Marston Vale again as before the 230 there was a 150 operating half the services on the line.
I do not understand why there as so may 2 carriage 196 where there are few services where these will be suitable as single units.

why is LNWR getting 150s? not that I'm complaining but a bit unusual

Most likely to work on the Marston vale line. As lnwr has had issues with the class 230's so either replacing them or complimenting them

The 230 finished operating with LNWR in December 2022 and the line has had a replacement bus service since then so the 3 150 from Northern will allow the rail service to be restored.

The 230s went away because Vivarail were in charge of maintenance, but they went bankrupt. There was no one in place to maintain the units, and they were too unreliable to bother setting up a new supplier

My suggestion is that GWR should of kept the Class 387/3s that would be used on the Reading-Newbury shuttle.

I hope the class 350/2 find future uses after they leave WMT as they are decent trains that are not that old.

Great video, a WLW one would be really interesting (worst late western/first great western)
I also hate how WMR puts blue around the window on accessible doors, looks so ugly, a strip like northern and GA would be better

Sadly with the cracks on Yaw Damper on the 196 they maybe withdrawn or taken out of service soon. Or maybe replaced.

  • @Andrewjg_89

Shame that London Northwestern Railway aren’t going to use the Class 230s anymore. Perhaps cascade them down to GWR to be used on the Greenford branch line and convert them into Battery/Hybrid units.
London Northwestern Railway could hire some of the Ex-London Overground Class 172/0s that would be ideal to operate on the Marston Vale Line. But instead they have opted for 3 Class 150 Sprinter DMUs to work on the Marston Vale Line. And of course the Class 323, Class 319 and Class 350/2 are to be replaced by the Class 730 Aventras this year.
