I believe that CoP was designed to be very different from SoC/CS because of how linear and limiting the SoC map was, I'd even argue that a lot of SoC was comprised of dungeon crawl maps... With a completely new map they could focus on making their game more open world. To further remove the linearity (and the slog of tredging from the two opposing points on the map) they set up transition points in the center/hub areas to move in between maps.
6:36 I like how the world map in Clear Sky is a much more polished Shadow of Chernobyl world map, the areas don't look like they were poorly photoshoped into the world, some areas are shrinked to fit better, roads connecting the areas were added like with the railroad in Swamps connecting to the railroad in Cordon, and it overall looks like a map you'd see in real life. On a side note, it's interesting to see some huge cracks in the world in the upper left and right sides of the Call of Pripyat map. Maybe those are huge anomaly fields like the ones with burner anomalies in the games?
Honestly, I have a feeling that the 60km2 of Stalker 2 will include lots of somewhat empty, or otherwise nondescript space. The thing about Stalker 1 maps is that they're for the most part pretty densely packed, with little unnecessary room. They're only as big as they need to be. But since Stalker 2 will feature only one big map, I bet there will be plenty of areas where nothing in particular happens or is present.
I think thats really a thing in alot of open world games tbh. Fallout games, atleast 3 and new vegas have huge maps, but alot of the areas are just desolate space with nothing too noteworthy alot of the times and copy & paste interiors. Only a few games IMO has managed to create the open world as vibrant as desired, mostly games like red dead redempiton, gta etc. I would rather have smaller maps and more content than vice versa, and the OG stalker trilogy did just that.
Hopefully there is some faction camps/bases and territory that make all the Woodlands in IRL exclusion zone and out of bounds from the original stalker trilogy less empty and maybe important if they make some anomalies region locked in certain areas.
I think your most likely right the thing I liked about stalker soc only one I played just started clear sky a few seconds ago but one thing I liked is the small areas I kept going back and forth for a little and did some sidequests had a lot of fun even went and checked onna stalker the first one I befriended made sure he was a ok

The in-game measuremen't isnct really to scale with object size. If you'd measure how tall an NPC is using crosshair, you'll find them 1.4 meters tall or something. Expected average height is 1.75 meters. You can also do same with buildings, especially those in CoP - check in-game size vs. sattelite map and I'm sure the in-game measurement will be smaller on average. Or do the same for cars (automobile or train) etc.
I am quite sure that in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. the measurements are accurate. I did measure NPCs and they are about 1.8 meters tall. Other known objects like vehicle are also size accurate except for a few exceptions.

If the stalker 2 map is that big in comparison with the combination of all the previous games the have a big opportunity to introduce some basic vehicles aswell. A truck that you could use as storage or a 4x4 like a lada niva would be perfect! I think if you can only travel by foot it might become a walking simulator which might get the players bored (not me though)

You can hack into it via the Bar. There aren't any buildings, though. Just walls that you can pass through. (Oh, and a way to skate/glide around if you are adventurous enough.)
What I hate about games is how skewed the distance and proportions of things are. If you compare PUBG, Warzone(the original), gta5, Escape from Tarkov, DCS and Hitman WoA you can see how can devs make things good and awful at the same time. 100m in one game is 400m in another. And that's without taking into consideration movement speeds. One thing I remember very well from the original warzone (and gta5) is that runways are way too short, like less then a kilometer short. It wouldn't be that bad if they didn't choose to put a plane that is more then 10% of the size of that runway. What I'm trying to say is that devs can make a game feel gigantic or small depending on their sense of dimensions.
The original Chernobyl exclusion zone is 30km radius. In Stalker, it is extended to 60km after the accident. That's over 5000 square kilometers! Stalkers have barely made it anywhere it's just so deadly!
I'm sorry but I can't find it. I may have just misread the wiki at one point that says it's 60km wide, not 60 km radius. I could have sworn something somewhere said the radius increased, maybe it has something to do with the Wish Granter expanding the Zone after every wish, that much is backed up by the wiki. My bad, I thought I knew my lore haha.@@anomalousdugout9557
Calculating size of playable areas and in-game time which take to traverse them with sprint we can conclude that all 3 protagonists can in fact run very fast
I wonder how big Lost Alpha's map is. I think it has by far the largest maps of all the stalker mods. It includes most of the maps that the standalone sandbox mods include, as well as introducing a bunch of its own maps, as well as modifying the already existing maps to be much larger.

I remember a year back, I did a calculation with how the Zone would expand after the events of SoC all the way till 2022 when Heart of Chornobyl will take place. And with the lore that Emissions expand the Zone, my calculations concluded that the Zone expanded over 15k kilometers (If I remember right) ever since Strelok killed the C-Con scientists and caused the Zone to be uncontrolable. So if GSC kept this in mind since they are planning Stalker 2 to take place 10 years after the first game. We would be having established maps bigger than before, or new maps bigger than the previous maps we know. Just imagine the Cordon will be longer than how we remember it because the Military will be forced to fall back from the daily Emissions adding +5 km to the Zone's size.
As far as I remember in the FAQ they mentioned that old zones will be expanded and new zones added, so visiting old zones is going to be cool not only because how they changed over year's, but because it got expanded and new things to see
I mean, technically the original planned STALKER 2 (that was in the works around 2009 and eventually shelved) was based around a zone that had expanded to contain the entirety of Belarus, eastern Ukraine, and eastern Russia. I mean that’s obviously very big, and it would be very cool (once the 2022 STALKER 2 comes out) if some models put that original zone back into the game

@@SonOfTheDawn515 you clearly havent played it at launch. and even after that. it took years for the damn thing to be semi-functional. but when its fixed and modded i like it too.
Excellent work! As well as the square kilometres, are you able to provide the length and width of each map? (Or at least, the length and width of the rectangular regions?) I've read people saying that the road in Cordon is 1.8km long but that seems unlikely if the entire square km of the Cordon map s less than 1km! There are complete overhead PDA maps of the zone (you showed some in this video), the physical collector's editions of the game also came with paper versions of those zone maps, would you be able to work out the scale of those maps? (The Call of Pripyat even has a square grid, but no scale is provided.) Also, would this technique of using the distance indicator numbers allow you to work out the player's normal walking speed/running speed/crawling speed?
I do have the length and width of the maps. I'll see if I can make a post about it, for example Cordon is around 1260 meters long. The PDA maps are not accurate because the scales of each area are not consistent, some are too small and some are too big compared with each other (an obvious example is the Dark Valley which appears way too big). Yes, we can use this technique to figure out the player speed. I'll try to do it someday.
@@anomalousdugout9557 fantastic, thank you! It is a shame that the PDA maps (and presumably the paper maps that came with the physical game) have those distortions. I'm working on a Stalker-inspired setting for a tabletop role-playing game, and I had hoped to work out the scale of the paper/PDA maps and use them for calculating wildernesses travel times and distances. "To get from rookie Village to the Bar is *something* kilometres, if you follow the road and miraculously aren't interrupted by anything, that should take you approximately *something* hours to get there if you walk at normal speed..." But it seems like it might be necessary to use the individual length/width of each map rather than referring to the overall zone map, due to not all the locations being the same scale on the map. Is that also true of Stalker Anomaly? I know that that has a map that includes the locations from all 3 games, and the map was tweaked in order to include everything. I wonder if it would be possible for someone to create a "true" map of the zone, by adjusting the size of certain regions to match their in-game counterparts. Or by using overhead screenshots of each area, and splicing them together.
That's the size of the lake near me now including the park land. That will take time to traverse. However, how are they measuring? Are they including inside buildings in that measurement or just the map itself?
@@SonOfTheDawn515 they just talking about landscape. The map was leak long time ago. Its huge but there especially if you had the dlc's area it more than that
CoP already felt quite empty between marked areas; If they don't fill Stalker2's map with lore tidbits or random encounters that size is going to end up being more of a chore to deal with than a boon.
were just playing at the southearn exclusion zone and discovered many things... we don't know what's happening in the northern (belarus border), western, and eastern exclusion zone...
My hope with stalker 2 is that it’s not just a really big map but it’s like call of Pripyat where there’s always something nearby to explore and do I don’t feel like walking a giant empty map also I wonder if they are implementing any sort of vehicle or fast travel system and how it’ll work
I found the maps on all three canon games quite small with too many locations out of bounds. Lost Alpha provided some opportunities to explore out of bounds areas although they may be named differently and reoriented differently from the canon games.
Would've really loved if Anomaly maps were included. I suspect the barren Darkscape or the infinite Truck Cemetery may be just as large, if not larger, than Zaton. Either way, 8 sqkm is a pretty good volume - Fallout 4, beautifully built and packed, is at about 10 sqkm.
Damn the possible map matches almost completely with the one from the canceled 2012 Stalker 2 map. Really gets my hopes up it might actually look like that in the new stalker 2
I remember someone in /vg/ posting an image showing the official full PDA map of SoC and then an edited version roughly showing how big the map actually was, more or les 1/3 of what we see in the PDA, and it shows how actual talented game developers make you FEEL like you are in an empty wasteland WITHOUT actually throwing you into an empty wasteland so you can actually enjoy the game and focus on the packed up action that stalker has instead of wandering around empty meaningless maps looking for something to do like most survival games do nowadays, even worse they even throw some random npcs with even more meaningless sidequests. You can finish stalker in 15 hours or play for 4000 like tejas stalker does. Salutations from your neighbors in Catalonia.
I had always hoped that a modder would join all the maps and fill in the gaps. I like when game worlds have room between points of interest and don't have everything packed into a small cramped space. (Fallout 3 and 4 both have that problem) It's sounding like Stalker 2 may possibly have what I've been looking for.
This must have taken a lot of time and effort. Well done and thanks. I also would love to explore the inaccessible areas of Rostok, Limansk and so on. Do you have a guess at the size of Stalker Anomaly?
I thought he was just going to use the CNPP (since it's a real location we have the measurements of) as a reference for the other locations but this is much more interesting.
5KM is a marathon, it's around 3 miles. I've run that distance before. I've just beaten the first 2 games and Clear Sky's ending was atrocious, at least gameplay wise. I wanted to sell a bunch of stuff, but then I got to limansk and was forced to beat the game with broken armor, fighting through a merciless gauntlet of Monolith and Bandits. That pissed me off, but I'll replay it and try to find upgrade kits, as I don't think I found any. Needless to say I was less than satisfied with my performance in Clear Sky. I'm almost to Pripyat in CoP, but I had to reload a checkpoint because my squad got killed by hamsters.
With the unexpected release of the console versions of the original trilogy a few days ago, finally the Stalker franchise is getting a new peak in the popularity. What do you think of the console versions Dugout ?
Thank you for this video and the work it required. I always was amazed by the fact that the games use "small" maps but that you never feel cramped when playing (I'm an Operation Flashpoint/Arma player so I may not have the same definition of what is a small map). Anyway, have you tried to superimpose outdoor maps and underground maps? I think that you told us about the wrong connections between these two kind of maps in your Agroprom underground video...
If the total area of the zone in real life is 2600 square kilometers, that means that we have only explored .22% of the zone in game. That also means that in STALKER 2, we will only explore 2.50% to 2.31% of the total zone. There's a lot left that we know nothing about.
Bro did you know they released stalker trilogy in ps5? maybe you can examine if there was cut content or something back that in pc ver cut got back in ps5 ver?
I too have wondered how large the playable area of the triology was. This was a very well made video and well researched. I'm very excited to see the open world of Stalker 2!
Honestly something feels off about your methodology. And I believe it to be the "crosshair measurement" system used. The reason I feel this way is because Stalkers feels A LOT bigger than just 6km² in real life. I believe that a more true to life way of measuring the gamespace would be to take the average person walking speed (between 4 to 5 km/h), measure how long it takes to cross Cordon, for example, just by walking, and then measure the distance walked, and consequently the whole game space following this method. Do you still have the configs you used in ImageJ? It would simply require changing the base distance.
Another great video, could you create a idea about how big the Heart of Chernobyl map could be? I know that it will include the great swamps and other OG maps but what about the CoP maps?
@@anomalousdugout9557 sorry, I am retarded. Here is a response from chat gpt. for the ones like me. To convert square kilometers to square meters, you can use the conversion factor: 1 square kilometer (km²) = 1,000,000 square meters (m²). So, to convert 0.087 km² to square meters: 0.087 km² * 1,000,000 m²/km² = 87,000 m² Therefore, 0.087 square kilometers is equal to 87,000 square meters.

I've read people saying that the road in Cordon is 1.8km long but that seems unlikely if the entire square km of the Cordon map s less than 1km!
There are complete overhead PDA maps of the zone (you showed some in this video), the physical collector's editions of the game also came with paper versions of those zone maps, would you be able to work out the scale of those maps? (The Call of Pripyat even has a square grid, but no scale is provided.)
Also, would this technique of using the distance indicator numbers allow you to work out the player's normal walking speed/running speed/crawling speed?
"To get from rookie Village to the Bar is *something* kilometres, if you follow the road and miraculously aren't interrupted by anything, that should take you approximately *something* hours to get there if you walk at normal speed..."
But it seems like it might be necessary to use the individual length/width of each map rather than referring to the overall zone map, due to not all the locations being the same scale on the map.
64 km2 is crazy! I can't wait 😊
That's the size of the lake near me now including the park land. That will take time to traverse. However, how are they measuring? Are they including inside buildings in that measurement or just the map itself?
We'll have to see how they measured it indeed. Could just be a marketing strategy.
Yes, who knows what's going on over there.
My hope with stalker 2 is that it’s not just a really big map but it’s like call of Pripyat where there’s always something nearby to explore and do I don’t feel like walking a giant empty map also I wonder if they are implementing any sort of vehicle or fast travel system and how it’ll work
I believe they know what they are doing, we will see soon.
I wonder if the vehicle sizes (for example a train because it's larger and easier to measuer on map, or a helicopter) are realistic
I believe they are in most cases, at least approximately.
Pretty big, especially if you mod it to remove the barb wire fences
Yes.
How about the locations that are in Lost Alpha / Anomaly.
Interesting, thanks for sharing.
If you were to travel from the bottom of the swamps all the way to the northern edge of the CNPP I wonder how long the distance would be
We would have to know the distance between the locations. Maybe I'll try to figure it out in a future video!
I had always hoped that a modder would join all the maps and fill in the gaps. I like when game worlds have room between points of interest and don't have everything packed into a small cramped space. (Fallout 3 and 4 both have that problem) It's sounding like Stalker 2 may possibly have what I've been looking for.
Классное видео, приятно видеть, что англоязычная аудитория интересуется моей любимой серией игр
More popular over here than you know, STALKER. Now stay cheeki breeki and good hunting!
Nice.
This is the year of stalker my friends. Long time fan of the book, film and game but being a console guy I never got to play until now.
This must have taken a lot of time and effort. Well done and thanks. I also would love to explore the inaccessible areas of Rostok, Limansk and so on.
Do you have a guess at the size of Stalker Anomaly?
It's time well spent! I believe Anomaly is mostly the same maps with a few additions so it should not be much bigger.
Do a hestory on GSC it self and all of it's lesser known games, if you haven't already. And briefly include the spinoffs too.
I thought he was just going to use the CNPP (since it's a real location we have the measurements of) as a reference for the other locations but this is much more interesting.
Yes.
You can’t turn on distance crosshair and it’ll show you how much space from your point to the end is uselly 300-500 meters
Wat is blud talking about
Nice video mate
Thanks.
Would be interesting to see the same but for Anomaly, since it combined and expanded maps from the trilogy.
This is some sakharov type of calculations!
Check out my Gauss rifle video for even more :)
With the unexpected release of the console versions of the original trilogy a few days ago, finally the Stalker franchise is getting a new peak in the popularity. What do you think of the console versions Dugout ?
I do not have consoles so I can't test it for myself, but it is great to have so many newcomers to the series!
Bravo! A very nice and informative video. Keep it up.
Thanks.
It's not about size, it's about the speed at which you can travel through them.
Get through quicker with a turbo charged 4 cyl pushing 300 hp and 300 ft lbs of torque vs a trabant.
It also matters that's true.
I did not try that yet, but I should!
If the total area of the zone in real life is 2600 square kilometers, that means that we have only explored .22% of the zone in game. That also means that in STALKER 2, we will only explore 2.50% to 2.31% of the total zone. There's a lot left that we know nothing about.
Zaton seems like a good place to take a healthy jog in
Indeed :)
Ackshully 🤓 the folders containing the map files should contain a txt file with the dimensions of each map
Then go ahead, share that results with us!
Bro did you know they released stalker trilogy in ps5?
maybe you can examine if there was cut content or something back that in pc ver cut got back in ps5 ver?
Honestly, you totally forgot to include Dead City and Darkscape, since they are canon, but I understand why you didn't include them as well.
As an actual cartographer, indeed some maps are smaller and some maps are bigger throughout the series.
I too have wondered how large the playable area of the triology was. This was a very well made video and well researched.
I'm very excited to see the open world of Stalker 2!
Thanks.
that's actually very interesting
Nice.
I believe all the previous maps will be there along with new ones, but we will see on release.
If you read in the FAQ it is stated that old zones will be expanded and new ones added.
My request was a bit pre-mature because I didn't watch the whole video so there's that
Super vidéo tu vas refaire le même format de cette vidéo a la sortie de stalker 2 pour voire les nouvelles mesure de la map ou flemme ?
C'est bien possible que je le fasse.
Super !
So Limansk is a size of my appartment - 87 square meters
No. 0.087 km² is 87 000 m².
@@anomalousdugout9557 sorry, I am retarded. Here is a response from chat gpt. for the ones like me.
To convert square kilometers to square meters, you can use the conversion factor: 1 square kilometer (km²) = 1,000,000 square meters (m²).
So, to convert 0.087 km² to square meters:
0.087 km² * 1,000,000 m²/km² = 87,000 m²
Therefore, 0.087 square kilometers is equal to 87,000 square meters.
Apoyo the triology is on consoles now
I wonder how big it is in anomaly
when will you make stalker 2 arg video? i really wanna see it.
I'm not sure if I should do it, it's been so long.
Can console players go in third person mode :(
I think 64 square kilometers, including DLC
Maybe it is.
Thank for the video comrade
WHUT ?? I never knew the Red Forest had these boundaries ! I think I've never been to the Eastern part !!!
Try to explore it next time.
@@anomalousdugout9557 ehe I'll do !
I've played Stalker and especially Call of Chernobyl since a long time and I'm just testing Anomaly because it has 3 more huge maps !
Yet I'm more curious of what's in the Red Forest than thoses 3 maps haha
@@anomalousdugout9557 And Yet, after 15 years I'm still brownin' my pants in this place hahaha
Man, you're stronger than me. The quicker I get through that hell hole (like the labs) the better.
Until a few years ago, I was oblivious to it as well. Only got there because one Anomaly story quest lead me there. It's every bit as creepy as the rest of the Red Forest.
Im not exactly sure we can ever be 100% sure about the area of the zone due to the concept of spatial anomalies. Things just cannot be coherent but the effort is extremely commendable and I certainly couldnt have done it better myself
Yes, things remain uncertain.
Cool video!
Just got stalker for the xbox ive wanted to play this game since i was like thanks for all the tips and help
Very nice!
Nice content, Stalker
Thank you.
I’m surprised that Call of Pripyat has the smallest playable area, at release I remember there being a lot of marketing about how big the game maps were.
These maps are very big but there's only 3 of them.
You can tell CoP is small. Quickest game to get through without even trying to speed run it.
