  • Comparing the sounds of the new Korg ARP Odyssey with a MiniMoog Model D (circa 1974). Plus the Hammond M-100 gets in on the action.
    Of course there will be snippets of your favorite prog rock tunes (poorly played I might add), because PROG ROCK WILL NEVER DIE!!!
    Thanks to Andrew Amado for the synths & the editing.

    This is great. I always kind of assumed that the Odyssey and Model D had very different sonic characteristics from each other. Obviously because of the filters, but probably also because the different expressive potential of each attracted different styles of players. Anyway, I never knew they were basically so similar. Very enjoyable post!

    This video sold me on buying a Korg ARP Odyssey reissue, and I already own a Minimoog. One of these days I need to get my hands on a Hammond and a sequined cape. I'll lock myself in my basement and finally fulfill my dream of being a Rick Wakeman LARPing synth-hermit!

    I find most comparisons like this never have a "winner"...ironically everyone is a "winner" as both sound glorious! You really can't go wrong with any Moog. ARP, Korg, Roland, Dave, etc. (made today or 50 years ago), just find the one that has the features and vibe you like, hold on tight, and set you sights for the center of the sun or dark side of the moon!...also that guy playing, Mike? is amazing and would probably make a 1982 Casio sound fantastic so keep that in mind.....

    • @vimfuego8827

      Indeed there is no winner, well observed.

    I see them as two different synth ,like comparing a Strat to a Les Paul. I own two Odysseys, a Quadra, the Moog LP and a Voyager. I love them all.

    I believe you were teleported from the 70's to teach us what music was about when musicians played instruments to express themselves... I'm not at your skill level but I'm working on it. Cheers to you mate!

      I'm not on that skill level either, but thank you! The decade is immaterial. It's musicianship and passion that matters most and there's great music of every decade to represent that. That being said, we're inundated with such talentless pablum in rock, country, pop & electronic music via the internet and what's left of the major labels and radio airplay that any real good music coming out today is harder to find than ever.

    Make them sound totally different and figure their true qualities. Let the Moog make Moog sounds and the ARP sound like an ARP.

  • @EricBBarker
    @EricBBarker 4 роки тому +1

    omg, when you went noodling into Revealing Science, that brought absolute joy to my day! And then into Cinema Show to boot! Too of my favorite synth lines ever. I didn't realize until today that the ProSoloist only had a single oscillator, I feel like I heard some subtle phasing on the leads and have always reproduced it with two oscillators. Tony used a lot of effects though, including MSR Phaser, which is probably what I'm hearing. He started to use it with a lot more resonance on Lamb Lies Down (sometimes too much, IMO). I don't know if Tony ever got an odyssey. I'm reading he eventually got an ARP Quadra (Sort of ARP's Prophet5 with some Odyssey guts), but that was much later.
    I'm going to have to break out my Clonewheel and play some of these lines together with the Mini now! I feel like the Mini does a quite serviceable job for the Odyssey in your video. I just gotta be careful not to overdo the filter freq. In many videos comparing Minis vs Odysseys, it feels like the mini always has the brighter tone. A little feedback and rolling off the filter a tad helps with that.

  • @curebdc
    @curebdc 9 років тому +6

    This is awesome! But I don't think the Arp and the Moog are supposed to sound similar at all. The Arp is capable making some really harsh tones that the Moog can't and the Moog can make some really sweet fatty harmony rich stuff that the Arp cant. That duophonic oscillator warble that happens is great for gnarly noise sounds.
    Also the filter on the moog is 4 pole if im not mistaken right?

    • @AndrewAmado
      @AndrewAmado 8 років тому +1

      +curebdc In any case I like the fact they can sound very similar, besides it kinda makes a little sense since both these synths were major rivals back in those days, ARP kinda tried to make the Ody sound real close to the moog with the MK-II's Lawsuit Ladder filter.
      Also Yes, the Moog has a 4 pole ladder filter, but the K-ARP has all 3 filter types from its 3 model history, this includes the original MK-I 2 pole, MK-II "Moog-ish" 4 pole filter, and the MK-III 4 pole with a much higher resonance curve.

    • @edcollins9377
      @edcollins9377 8 років тому +1

      +curebdc The thing is they can sound very different and they can also sound very similiar. (I think this video points out the fact that they aren't always so different.) Personally, I think filter 3 (ARP 4 pole) can sound very Moog-like at low resonant settings, while at higher resonance settings filter 2 (Moog clone) sounds more Moog-like (nails that Minimoog (resonance) growl).

    • @Shred_The_Weapon

      They're really supposed to compliment one another, if you can't choose between them. There was a reason Chick Corea used the Odyssey as his bass synth and the Model D for his lead synth.

  • @Shred_The_Weapon
    @Shred_The_Weapon 7 років тому +1

    The whole time, I'm wondering if you could wire the Hammond as a MIDI controller and attach a Minitaur module to the pedals. Or two of them for duophonic operation.
    I could've sworn that Tony Banks did grab up a Minimoog D during the late 70s, but I might be confusing him with Robert Lamm from Chicago (as if that's possible).
    Totally love that reference to the music from Zelda!
    When you simulate the organ from "Won't Get Fooled" Again", you also need to have the ARP's Oscillator 2 set to LFO mode and controlling the filter cutoff freq.

    The type 3 filter on the FS odyssey is the best one imo (arp4053 if i'm not mistaking) , and i was not surprised tbh... i used to own a voyager, and guess what, where i'm from (reggae/funk/electro), the moog always sounded the same and way too sweet for what i was looking for, ended up selling it (in 2012 what a mistake when you see the actual prices lol, and tbh i didnt have the sound design knowledge i have now back then, it was a miostake okay... lol again)). just so it is said somewhere; it was an electric blue, well that's the dumbest idea, those lights induce noise, so i cant imagine how thos B things that look like a xmas tree must give in the S/N ratio realm (and i wont comment on the switched power supplies, as i was prety disapointed to se a dc15v slot on the FS.... i might change that for a toroid one day...). So just to end my comment, lately i have seen a doc on chromeo where the guys said something close about the minimoog and Anthony marinelli in a recent vid saying not far from the same thing (the moog is not as funky as the arp). Love my M101(P!) too btw.... Oh just one last thing; normally i hate plastic in general, well that recycled plastic shell they used for the odyssey fs is really nice imo, reduces weight and i think it's a bettter choice for durability related to bumps or shocks... nice vid, i'm in.... slight diff an organ player might have noticed is the keys are not deported on the new odyssey (like on the spinet's upper kb, the idea was to be able to access a lower kb more easyly...). i might add a couple of wooden sides one day, even if i like that plastic shell.... the very first organ sound with the drive, sounded nice imo

      @MikeKiker  8 років тому

      I liked Keith Godcheaux. One of my favorites is the Steppin' Out England '72 box set that was the one tour where they had both Pigpen & Keith together. Only downside of that set is that now you know why they had to redub a lot of the vocals for the Europe '72 live album. But the Dead really lost me after that era. They lost a lot of dynamic with Pigpen. I liked Donna too, but the weird thing is that I've heard way more Deadheads complain and bitch about her contributions than compliment her. Honestly, Jerry, Bob & Phil were never the best singers anyway and I'm sure Donna was just doing her best.

    • @hieronymusrex
      @hieronymusrex 8 років тому +1

      to steal a term from Neil Young, the Dead always had a certain magical "ragged glory", at least as I see it. Robert Hunter had a lot to do with that. "Box of Rain" (book) is highly recommended (collected lyrics of Robert Hunter. The elegy he wrote for Jerry was astonishingly beautiful, however it's not in the book =0(

    Nice demo of the two synths. I have the Karp. Could you please tell me how you got the Won't Get Fooled Again Sound? I thought it was done by running an organ through sample and hold via external audio. I tried on my Karp today with interesting results but little success. How do you get the steady pulse?

    Tony Banks did indeed use the Polymoog around late 70s but don;t recall him using Minimoog.

    • @MikeKiker
      @MikeKiker  8 років тому

      As far as I know, he never used a Polymoog either. He used an ARP Quadra which is capable of very similar sounds, but is a far more interesting polysynth in my opinion.

    just a question; Did you use some reverb/delay on the Minimoog, while less (or not) on the Odyssey? Would be nice to get an honest answer on that mather... Thanks...

    • @MikeKiker
      @MikeKiker  6 років тому

      Hey, sorry for the late response. I have Roland Space Echo pedal on the Moog and just built-in amp reverb on the ARP. They're both going into different amps and for the life of me I can't remember what they were.

      +F -André NOPE . the moog DOES have a superior sound, when it's raw , but the oddyssey has more features. i like to think of the mini as a solid luxury car and the odyssey as a turbo powered muscle car.

    • @F-Andre
      @F-Andre 8 років тому +1

      yeah but you dont have to spend 3-4k for a moog when you can make some sounds on an korg arp. think i will get a korg arp. but first i want the minilogue

    • @PHAEDRIDER
      @PHAEDRIDER 8 років тому +2

      that;s my point , i have a '74 whiteface and up against the mini the mini clobbered it at first,BUT then kick in the sample hold and all the modulation choices and it's clear that the odyssey is way more capable. and i'm all into the minilogue, i think it has my tax refund al over it

  • @horowizard

    The Minimoog has a bit more bite to the sound.
    I think you could fine tune the Odyssey to mimic that a bit better.

    Moog is fatter and organic-sounding (like a musette accordion) not least since those 3 oscs are drifting so much. ARP is 'spookier' and kind of otherwordly which, for me, gives it an edge. Were you tasked with a retro scfi movie to soundtrack, offered a choice between them to do the job, you'd grab the Odyssey every time.

    • @MikeKiker
      @MikeKiker  6 років тому

      Very much so. I'm already used to real mini keys because of the Microkorg and Microbrute, but the keys on ARP are a lot closer to full size.
