I don't think he was tuff enough. The dude was stuttering when naming predators and never mentioned cougars ! Mature cats main diet is deer ! We had both at our home in Wyoming ! When a deer we'd been watching every morning turned up missing. I could usually go find the carcass, set a tail cam and watch them come everyday and eat

Pretty clear that back in the 90's the DNR implemented a long term initiative to transition the UP into more of an Ontario boreal forest bush country experience, and make it more of a destination for the Subaru crowd then the GMC crowd...moose, wolves, cougars, and fewer whitetails are the result.

The DNR have no clue. CWD will spread whether you bait or not. Theres licking branch's scrapes exc. Baiting doesnt make it any worse. We have baiting here in arkansas and we also have CWD and baiting hasnt made it any worse. They just want to fill there pockets with federal money for the research.

I agree, here in sw mi just like any where else deer prefer certain feeding areas. Like a big white oak, Or a single apple tree. Deer numbers are not as high as they say. Not even here in sw mi.

    • @Jim_Bud
      @Jim_Bud 7 місяців тому +1

It increases deer congregation more than Not baiting. As hunters know. Doe have concentrated family groups and smaller home ranges. Research shows Bucks in states with CWD are statistically greater carriers than doe due to Bucks greater ranges and travel i.e RUT. If you cut down on bait piles for passing deer to hit it will lessen exposure. I agree it will spread regardless but the key is to outpace that spread. CWD areas should be open all year.

@kylen1922 last fall you go by the bean field next to timber ridge ski area. The hill side was ravaged by deer and over 12 deer a night feeding there ! Down the road farther west same thing. But smaller herds. There are leeward quantities of deer in sw mi but they are scattered. Yet no cwd found. Less than 10 years ago we had the bug go thru and wipe out I'd say 90%of the mature bucks.

As a 60 year hunter I have seen our deer herd fluctuate dramatically in both the lower and upper lower peninsula. I have no experience with the UP and expect they have unique problems. It is a given that there is fewer hunters every year. Listening to Jimmy's interview of Chad who is with the DNR I could hardly contain my anger when Chad indicated that non-hunters and anti-hunters are part of our (their) hunter advisory board. Hunters pay the bills, generate the income, for the DNR so they should have the most input into our regs. TO HELL WITH THE NON-HUNTERS AND ANTI-HUNTERS. They should have no input into our state hunting regulations. Would Democrats serve on the Republican Committee? Hell NO!

How do the reported deer kill numbers of the last two years compare to the calculated numbers of previous years? Chad did not want to answer questions about the numbers.
As for U.P. winters and the deer herd, I remember the DNR use to report the winter severity index (or, some such term). Do they still have such a number? How does it compare over, say, the last 20 years?
I sat in on a DNR advisory committee once. After months of work, the DNR ignored the committee recommendations, said it didn't matter, they already had their own plan.
All in all, we are either being gas lighted or obfuscated. I'm not impressed. We'll see what next week brings.

    Thanks for airing this.
I've been a hunter in the Upper Peninsula for 43 years and it's over for me.
Especially so in the last ten years there has been a steady decline in the U.P.'s Whitetail population. I've seen bad winters with high mortality rates before but the deer recovered. The deer don't have a chance in recovering anymore.
Let me mention a few things here, maybe at random; the 2023 rifle season for me in a nutshell, I saw a spike horn and a fork horn. I still hunt, it's what I like to do. I didn't see a doe, a fawn or a fleeting tail in six, dawn until dark, days afield.
A good friend of mine has a father who spent 11 full days afield with a crossbow, over bait and he did not see a single deer in those 11 days. Nothing.
I could go on and on about how poorly hunters are doing.
Seven years ago, my sons first year of deer hunting, I set him up in a blind in a carefully selected spot where deer historically traveled. Days into season of us sitting there he posed the question, "Dad, if I see a deer should I even shoot it?" A kid asking an ethical question of further damaging what appeared to him as to why he should kill anything that appears to be endangered.
My son does not deer hunt anymore even tho he's and avid small game and predator hunter along with a serious fisherman.
When I am told that we have a Whitetail population of 136,000 to 100,000 and a wolf population of 600 I have to seriously question that. Why is it that I see more signs of wolves than I do deer? That really seems like the consensus among people that actually spend time in the woods. I would venture it's more of a safe bet that there are 600 wolves in Houghton, Baraga and Ontonagon County. Add Gogebic in and you can almost double that number again.
Throw in a few more predators, like coyotes and cougars and we have ourselves a huge mess.
The DNR.... I just don't even know what to say? I'm not talking about C.O.'s and park people, I'm talking about the bureaucrats mucking this whole thing up. The DNR cares about one thing- your dollar. If people stop hunting they will just raise the price of something else(they just raised Park Passes...or whatever they call them now) or create some new special Labor Day Park Pass Holders Patriots Hunt.
The DNR just wants money and could give one rip about wildlife management or hunters.
However, what comes around goes around, and I hope I am still here to see it. Sooner or later the problems we have up here will leak downstate 😊. When your precious little Elk heard starts getting killed off, you little hobby farm animals start disappearing and your pets get torn apart out on a leash in your yard then maybe these DNR bureaucrats will get a little taste of their woke tree hugging ways.
    Have a nice day! 🙂

I appreciate the conversation, and my focus this year was on older antlerless deer over what I normally see in my area which is what I would call a basket racked buck. Heard management with the habitat issue is a tough one because so much of their habitat is being lost to building businesses like the giant litium battery plant by GM and all the land being taken back for new home building, and then wanting the deer gone because they eat the flowers in the areas that used to be their habit, so that is an area that is of concern don't continue taking it away from them. Been hunting my entire life and being responsible for the resource has always been paramount to me.

My two cents: many hunters relied on baiting, it's what they know, so they're much less successful now. Also, people who hunt small properties cannot "go where the deer go" so baiting helps. Find a way to make baiting legal. Next, if you want to encourage more antlerless deer taken, lower the price. It worked well when it was $5. But even $10 is better than the current $20. Finally, the DNR should be looking at the number of deer sighted as well as the number killed. I saw only 3 deer despite hunting more days than ever: one was a doe too far for a bow shot, another was a spike that I first thought was a doe and the third was a legal 6 pt that never offered a humane shot. But no one collects data on that because they weren't killed.

The one thing the DNR didn't say any thing about was the Cougar problem in the U.P.!!! 24 sighting in 2023 & 108th. since 2008??? 4 years ago on the Friday after Thanksgiving I went out hunting, on my way to my stand I ran into Cougar track. My size 13 hunting boots next to the tracks & the tracks were 3/4 to the size of the boots' Big cat!!! The DNR in Wisconsin give out free doe tags for certain counties. For some time now we've been told they were selling less deer tags and have fewer hunters so they started having special hunts. Youth hunt to start em early(sell more tags) and handicap hunts and extra doe tags and early doe season and late doe season trying to figure out why peoplle weren't hunting. At the same time stopped the baiting. Lots of people have small properties , especially in populated areas near farm land and they got that property to hunt but can't compete with farm crops without baiting so they gave up hunting (stopped buying tags) and the DNR is still trying to make up for that by offering more chances, more doe hunts ,use your buck tag on a doe. We hunters who buy tags are the ones supporting the DNR and the wildlife but give some say to non hunters which gives less say too hunters (tag buyers), but they don't seem to hear us. My family has two forty acre properties about 3 miles apart in northern Montmorency county where I have hunted every fall for near 60 years and have never seen deer numbers so bad. The 23 season I hunted one forty every day for a week and had a guy on the other forty for that week. More acorns than ever and Bob seen zero deer and I seen zero on the forty I hunted. Had a couple deer moving thru at night. They started the season nocturnal and far fewer deer as well. I believe they were pressured and slaughtered in the EARLY doe season as well as harvested by the preditor population. Coyotes. bob cats, wolves and couger. Yes all of these species live there, no matter what they want us to believe. Seeing is believing. I also have 22 acres where I live and it is forest proerty with food plots and oak trees and apple trees and a quarter to half mile from the farm crops and deer numbers were down here as well. Everyone I talked to had the same story, herd is way down from normal. When the DNR allowed 2 gallons of bait spred over a 10x10 area, that promoted parasites and desease. Bait hunters usually hunt the same set up most of the season. Ground blind or tree stand, they dump 2 gallons of shelled corn over the same 10x10 area every day. Where the deer eat they also shit. Deer are eating each others crap there by spreading the desease and parasites. I also noticed when the TB thing started in the in the 3 or 4 county area and the DNR stopped the baiting there and slaughtered the deer heard in the name of tb, if you took the original TB map and super imposed it over the MI elk hunting map it was the same. I don't and never did believe it was about tb. Brain worm is spread by the droppinngs, only 2 animals can survive brain worm. Whitetail deer and pigs. It was killing the elk and I will go to my grave believing it was about saving the elk from brainworm. Most hunters know they have almost zero chance of ever being drawn for an elk tag but they hunt deer anually and probably would not have helped slaughter the deer herd if they were told it was a brain worm thing.

Lol Deer harvest is down. Gosh it wouldn't be because that man and other DNR officials raise the hunting licenses to a point where no one can afford one. Then if you do go deer hunting with the price of licenses and if you have your deer processed it's not worth it. Then you also have the DNR wanting to know your life history if you do get one. Screw that, there's to much government in the state now.

I hunted a private lease in Menominee County from 1980 to 2000. Very very high deer numbers over that time period. The only major change since then seems to be the resurgence of Timber Wolves, combined with a huge decline in the deer population.

PLEASE...Make the damn straight wall cartridge length restriction null and void..... The "person's" in charge of this, needs to be educated on what's currently allowed and what's currently restricted, based on a cartridge ballistics scale alone. Currently YOU are allowing cartridges that out perform the restricted cartridges... Where's the "common" sense i hear about all the time.... We have a really really good track record for safety here in Michigan, so please give us the ability and freedom to choose a 350 legend or a 45-70 gov..... Rules like these are a huge huge reason i don't trust the NRC/ DNR/ State of Michigan to manage the deer population, make the sound correction.... Factual data is available... If your limited on you man power, to do the said research, please let me know i will give you any and all the info you would need and i will do it all for FREE....If you want more hunters, we need less restrictions at the end of the day.

I really like the questions tht where ask and I think the DNR officer answered very well I totally agree in the no baiting to keep a healthy heard think Abt it 2 bags a week times 300,000 people turns into millions of pounds of unnatural food on the land and I also like the idea of lowering the doe tag price if they where 5 bucks a piece I just buy all ten up front but if they do tht i think it would help our herd to go to one buck tag for a few years or earn ur sec buck tag either way good episode

At my camp in the UP it’s been a decline in deer for probably the last 7-10 years. I leave cameras out year round to monitor animals and snow depths. Most of the time the bears out numbered the deer population by a large percentage. The wolf and large predators are close to 1-1. Those aren’t good odds for deer. As for the snow it seems to be the same from winter to winter. Except for possibly this year.

It astounds me that the DNR can`t seem to connect the elimination of baiting wand the hike in license fees to the reduction in hunter numbers. There are a lot of casual hunters who are not willing to drop fifty bucks to go sit in the woods for a day or two, especially since they (without baiting) have such a slim chance of scoring a deer.

I hate to point out that out west with the Grizzly a very big anti hunter applied and got one of the few tags. Purposely not to fill it. This guy had been very vocal about the grizzly’s and how horrible he felt it was to have a controlled hunt Even though ranchers and farmers were have proven grizzly kills on livestock.
I just wonder what a anti hunters input would be any benefit to the conversation about harvesting deer. Once you open the door to that mindset they never leave.
Deer heard have gone down to scary levels in my area (lower northern)
Doe tags are insanely high And with the early doe season last year starting in June when they are dropping their fawns. Seems to me that’s not a eradication not management.
I’ve been hunting since the early 80’s and seen the heard flux but nothing like it is now.
It’s not just the diseases, heard winters, or even the predators that are hitting It the roads/highways the car deer accidents I live on a main truck route every year with in a mile we have 6+ deer killed. It’s alarming and I’d like to hear if that number is taken into account at all by the DNR
Thank you Jimmy. I’ve been a fan of Michigan out of doors my whole life.

20:11 Um wrong. The nrc classifies deer as a game animal and to be managed as such. The nrc has been directed by the people of the state of Michigan to follow "principals of sound scientific management" as directed by the people's 1996 proposal G. It most certainly does not allow people on a "committee" any powers in managing game animals in our state. Somehow the nrc
and the DNR have slid way off base not following proposal G and decided take input from sources that don't always have the deer herds best interest at stake but rather their own. The DNR has no power in making rules, that is the nrc. The nrc members are appointed by the governor. If you want real change and to follow "principals of sound scientific management", you first must change the nrc members that aren't swayed by special interest "stake holders".

Michigan makes it hard to donate deer to the needy. Other states make it so easy that people give away the deer they like/need to shoot but don't need in there freezer. Being able to donate the deer would help the hunters harvest more deer than there family's need.

Classic stubbornness from Chad and the DNR. They want to create this initiative group but don't want to listen and aren't open, just like the bait topic. I could care less and haven't baited since 06, but he instantly shut it down. Also yeah they don't enforce it anyways so why create laws for me to follow and others not to when they can't enforce it. People report issues and DNR do nothing if you can even get a response from them.
Cheaper doe tags, once again didn't want to listen and knows it all. Response was they do that in 487 and didn't see increase in tags. Well that's because the TB zone has been slaughtered for deer for decades. Keep in mind our crappy economy and high costs for everything. Processing is no joke. It's doubled in the last several years and your lucky to process under $120. Why should people shoot 10 doe? They can shoot 2 bucks for the same price and be happy with that. At least with a $5 doe tag it would be an incentive to shoot doe rather than have more bucks than doe taken every year., but once again they don't want to listen to anything we have to say.
UP numbers down and blames habitat but he couldn't answer they question what changed over the last 10 years. They know it all and see declines and concerns but their not open to anything already in place. Wolves introduced and we can't manage them! Just like deer or any other animal without hunting theres no way to contol population and numbers will continue to incease and deer will suffer to the Alpha predator. No changes coming!!
Brother reported state land being marked private property / no trespassing and harrased. Farmer has his field going well into state land now. Why isn't it being addressed? I guess we can just go mark state land to call our own too .
Lay in the grave you created MiDNR.

I am amazed at some of the questions and answers. For instance "when will see the baiting ban get lifted" HFD is that? Chads answer should have included pointing out that hunters should learn to hunt as well as get educated on how baiting affects whitetail deer movement.
I would like to see the penalty for baiting be the same as if the "hunter" violating the law to be the same as if they were caught poaching.
I would also like to see hunters embrace the harvest of doe and more importantly "not saving the doe for the rut" . Obviously the population dictates doe harvest. The decision is easily made, if you see a spike in the southern lower peninsula shot a doe at the 1st opportunity, do not wait.
I am hoping for real changes but the NRC disappoints every single year, not holding my breath. Bottom line, enjoy your time in the woods. Ed always said, "keep the fun in hunting"
