The state of mich, did nothing. First of all they should have dropped doe tag prices to 5 dollars across the board and a one buck rule for atleast 2 years. I am very disappointed about the lack of concern for the deer herd. It is obvious this is about money.

You don't want the legislature making decisions where wildlife is concerned, it will become more political than it is now. He who throws the most money to the politicians will have their way and you won't have a voice. I've lived in states where one or the other controlled decisions. The states where a regularly appointed board with term limits make decisions based on best known facts have far more to offer than ones where the legislature is in control. Turn it over to politicians the Farm Bureau will lobby for wiping the deer herd out completely!

This is why our hunting numbers In Michigan are declining And hunters myself included are heading out west to hunt. Our state has failed the hunters with A liberal Buck harvest. We should only be harvesting one buck per hunter in that buck should be in the upper class if we want to increase the QUALITY of bucks in this state.

The main reason for wolf reintroduction and protection in U.P. was to lower the deer herd numbers, no other reason.
Their cover story (excuse) is the endangered species act.
If they could get away with it you better believe they'd have a large growing population of wolves in the lower peninsula.
The nrc wants the deer herd numbers low, their "stakeholders" and lobbyists are demanding it. The nrc members are hand picked by the governor.
The common outdoor sportsman is far from the DNRs primary stakeholder, we are very low in the pecking order.

Each hunter has a certain amount of hours they can dedicate to a hunting season. By January I don’t even think about it anymore. If the State is wanting more licenses to be purchased then opening day should be moved to second Saturday in November and end on November 30 each year.

I love how everyone has the answer when they don’t have a clue. Look, insurance companies and insurance lobbyists run the MDNR. They get what they want and the hunter gets the shaft. This is a great way to produce higher kill numbers… if there was the hunters to do it. I know several hunters that used to hunt and never miss a day now they don’t want to bother because of all the rules and restrictions. One old hunter told me, I need to hire a lawyer every year just so I don’t misunderstand the rules and get fined. I understand his point. Right now Michigan is at an all time low for hunters since hunting became a licensed sport given the difference of population differences between then and now. How many guys and girls do you know that USED to hunt. I’ve lost count and the future is not bright. Good luck ladies and gentlemen

The sportsman is a very low priority "stakeholder". All the dnr public meetings (DMI) is just a front to pretend they care about the outdoor sportsman. Heaven forbid they upset our bank rolling them with our license dollars.
NRC members are appointed by the governor, they do what they are told which is influenced by special interest groups.

The shop owner is 100 percent correct. He isn’t quite harsh enough imo. DNR are clueless. It’s all about money and serving lobbyists. It’s pretty simple. Age class and buck quality only improve if you let them live longer. Doe population has to be controlled by any means necessary to achieve the correct sex ratio. If you have a 50 acre property with twenty doe you have to kill ten does every year to keep that population from growing. It’s very difficult. Stop charging for doe tags. Implement earn a buck program. Require at least one doe harvest before a buck can be taken. Charge more for buck tags. One buck only with antler restrictions. It’s not that complicated to fix…

Live in Johnson city TN, have a huge issue with the deer living in town, they destroyed my garden, bushes, fruit trees and keep me up at night when they wake up my dogs that sleep with me in bed.
During hunting season you have to be a 1,000 feet from a dwelling to use a compound bow, which means hunting is really outlawed and the state has a small bag limit on does, which my neighborhood is completely overwhelmed with.
So my next step is starting some kind of class action lawsuit against the state and city for the damages that there deer are costing us said homeowners.
The deer have almost totally lost their sense of fear towards humans and show no fear of my dogs behind the fences.
I can almost guarantee a deer attack in the community sooner than later, this is no joke, deer can and will attack in certain situations.

And the wolf's up here are killing off all our deer, weather people want to believe it or not, it is true, wolf's on my property constantly, and chasing us during deer season. We live on the property we hunt. We hunt for the food, and if you're lucky enough to see a nice buck, which are few and far between in the UP now, you bag it. These new rules are ridiculous, it's all about the money in my opinion

Michigan now has the Deer Manager that Indiana had for many years. These new laws are a carbon copy of what instituted in Indiana. It put our deer herd in the toilet. In 2012 when EHD was rampant he denied that it was state wide only admitting it in September. What was his solution to a desemated herd....no decrease in bonus antlerless permits and let the special extra late season go on as planned. Result was a new state record harvest. A record that in 10 plus years we haven't been within 10000 of since. Thanks Mr Stewart.

I have an idea. Keep the two buck rule but make both 4 points on one side. Then since we are required to buy a rodent license, make that good for doe. Manage doe like small game for two years. Firearm for doe starts October 1rst though the first week of January. Give processors incentive to process doe at a reduced price for the hungry and allow hunters to sell their doe meat. The herd would be reduced by half in two years.

In Nebraska (southeast) season's choice permits have been around for decades. Anterless only. Can be used for the particular season opened (e.g. archery, rifle, muzzle loader, late season). A hunter can keep buying permits until quota is met for its region/boundary. AND each permit came with a bonus tag. One year I shot 7 out of 8 tags.
Each permit cost $26 (=$13/deer). We process our own because you can buy a lot of beef with what processors charge. You make your money back (grinder, stuffer) in 1 or 2 deer.
But then 2010-11 came along and some insect caused a 66% reduction in herd numbers (based upon harvest report). Thirteen years later harvest numbers are still down and fees are now $42 for one but we do see more roadkills.
Disease die-off is coming your way if numbers aren't brought down.

I'm on board with a one buck tag limit but I as a hunter with limited time do not want to be restricted as to what I take .. that and opportunity is limited any more with the likes of entities like big buck leasing and others turning the sport into a a pay to play situation . Most of us can't afford thier pricing .. ive looked up many of thier lease options and have seen ridiculous pricing upwards of 100 dollars an acre .. more in some places .. might as well hunt high fence operations or like in my case not at all. State land is now a mess. So much habitat has been clear cut it’s nuts. Vast areas as far as you can see are now stumps and dirt. This pushes deer and hunter into much smaller areas. This causes huge problems for hunters and deer.
The current lopsided deer population problems are a product of a micromanagement, mismanagement and an incompetent DNR. Hunters are also responsible to a degree. But if you vote for more government that’s exactly what you’ll get. Politicians never fail on that promise.

Deer are wild animals, making them very difficult to manage. If the habitat is great and the food supply is high quality the numbers explode, 60% of does have twins and 15% have singles and 25% have triplets. Make sure to stay up on the counts. Iowa didn't and have experienced huge numbers of young deer sl late season antlerless have been issued for over 10 years in the lower 2 tiers of counties across the state.

This DNR is a joke. In Kansas when I hunted there, anyone could buy a doe permit over the counter for 5$. As many as one wants. EVERYONE HAD TO APPLY FOR ABUCK TAG. Resident and nonresident. They hav very good trophy quality there. Michigan DNR lets all hunters get 2 buck tags. Trophy quality in Michigan is CRAP. THANK YOU DNR. 🖕🖕🖕🖕😡

This is what happens when you turn a tradition that was for food and turn it into a sport, "sportsman" only want the bragging rights of that big rack.

Make the whole of October doe only. People that don’t agree with this really need to consider weather or not they hurt for meat to feed their family or are just a worthless trophy hunter just so they can say “I shot a monster buck”.
